The work presented here interset with remote sensing of the maritime environment. It espacially carried with the study of electromagnetic scattering by sea surface with the presence of the target. This study is done in bistatic configuration. So, it is completed by the analysis of the influence of various parameters related to the target and also to the environment. In this context, this work focuses on two important parts. The first is the study and simulation of Radar Cross Section (RCS) of a complex target placed in the maritime environment. And the second part deals with the application of ISAR radar imagery of an observed scene, with consideration of target on the sea surface. We have opted for a combination between Physical Optics (PO), Geometrical Optics (GO) and Equivalent Edge Currents (ECM) (POGO/ EMC) to estimate the RCS. In order to take into account the infuence of sea surface, we have genereted a 2D sea surface from the Elfouhaily spectrum. In order to integrate the target into the scenario (the target in its environment, radar imagery), we propose a parallelepiped representation of the naval taget and RCS calculation. The proposed methodology was evaluated through simulations and measurements on a generic model of a ship

ABSTRACT The main goal of the development of new radar systems is to improve the characterization of the observed target, which has to be identified in a complex and evolutionary medium, like for marine environments (seas, oceans and large lakes). In marine environments and particularly in coastal areas, there are different physical phenomena or object which can change the characteristics of the seas surface. For example, we may find ship wake which can change the geometric characteristics of the surface. Also, we may find some pollutant like petrol or oil, which change the dielectric constant of the surface. The breaking wave is another complicate phenomenon, which can change completely the features of the sea surface. All these phenomena are showed in the followin

Space-Based Displacement Monitoring of Coastal Urban Areas: The Case of Limassol’s Coastal Front

    Get PDF
In the last five years, the urban development of the city of Limassol has rapidly increased in the sectors of industry, trade, real estate, and many others. This exponentially increased urban development arises several concerns about the aggravation of potential land subsidence in the Limassol coastal front. Forty six Copernicus Sentinel-1 acquisitions from 2017 to 2021 have been processed and analyzed using the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) and the Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterers (StaMPS). A case study for the identification and analysis of the persistent scatterers (PS) in pixels in a series of interferograms and the quantity of the land displacements in the line of sight of the Limassol coastal front is presented in this research, with subsidence rates up to about (−5 to 4 mm/year). For the validation of the detected deformation, accurate ground-based geodetic measurements along the coastal area were used. Concordantly, considering that there is a significant number of skyscrapers planned or currently under construction, this study attempts a preliminary assessment of the impact these structures will pose on the coastal front of the area of Limasso

Study of EM bistatic signature of a heterogeneous sea surface with consideration of hydrodynamic phenomena

The work done in this thesis fits generally under the observation and maritime surveillance. To improve the detection and automatic identification of targets embedded in a noisy environment targets, we opted for the fusion of different knowledge and information regarding a remotely observed scene by microwave sensors. Indeed, several physical phenomena co-exist and interfere with the propagation of electromagnetic waves over a heterogeneous sea surface (the refraction due to the index gradients, the roughness of the sea surface, nonlinear hydrodynamic effects like waves breaking, the presence of objects, pollutants, ship wake, coastal areas,..). In this context, the work presented in this thesis focuses on the study of electromagnetic signature (diffusion coefficients) of a heterogeneous sea surface with consideration of hydrodynamic phenomena (linear: capillary and gravity waves, nonlinear: breaking waves). The electromagnetic signature is performed in bistatic configuration (monostatic and forward propagating) and in X-band. The complete study of this problem is difficult.Indeed, the breaking wave is a dissipative process of energy that corresponds to the last stage of the life of a wave and therefore has most often held in the shore. This nonlinear phenomenon produces a sea peak which is a rapid increase of the diffusion coefficients and can exceed l0 dB in a 100 ms period. This peak can lead to clutter, which can be identified as virtual targets, and then they can disrupt the detection radar system (false alarms). Therefore, to improve the detection process and reduce the false alarm rate, it is important to distinguish between targets and sea peaks generated by breaking waves. This represents one of the motivations and also the interest to study the electromagnetic signature of breaking waves in different observation configurations so that we can easily detect and identify the sea peaks. To solve this problem, we proposed a methodology based on a hybrid electromagnetic model which is on a combination of asymptotic methods (SPMI used in this work) to simulate the radar response of linear waves (capillary and gravity waves described via the Elfouhaily sea spectrum) and an exact methods, the method of moment (the FB "Forward-Backward" method is used in this work), to calculate the electromagnetic response of nonlinear waves (profiles are produced by the LONGTANK code). To complement the theoretical study and simulations, we carried out an evaluation and validation phase by measuring the radar signature of breaking wave profiles in the ENSTA Bretagne anechoic chamber

The purpose of this thesis is to characterize random signals, observed in air and underwater context, by using a statistical approach. In signal processing, the hypothesis of Gaussian model is often used for a statistical study. However, the Gaussian model is not valid when the probability density function of data are characterized by heavy-tailed and skewness phenomena. A family of laws can fit these phenomena: the α-stable distributions. Firstly, the α-stable distribution have been used to estimate generated and real data, extracted from a mono-beam echo-sounder, for seabed sediments classification. The classification is made by using the theory of belief functions, which can take into account the imprecision and uncertainty of data and theirs estimations. The results have been compared to a Bayesian approach. Secondly, in a context a marine surveillance, a statistical study from the α-stable distribution has been made to characterize undesirable echo reflected by a sea surface, called sea clutter, where the sea surface is considered in a bistatic configuration. The sea surface has been firstly generated by the Elfouhaily sea spectrum and the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of the sea surface has been computed by the Physical Optics (PO). The Weibull and distributions have been used and the results compared to the α-stable model. The validity of each model has been evaluated by a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test

The purpose of this thesis work is to study the interaction of electromagnetic waves in L bandwith breaking coastal sea waves, in particular for an observer situated close to the surface. The work attempts to realize a precise electromagnetic modeling in narrow link with hydrodynamic model. To model and calculate electromagnetic fields scattered by breaking sea waves, we use a numerical approach by boundary integral technique, in particular Method of Moments (MoM). In this frame, we focus on the reliability and the convergence problem of numerical computation for strong curvature geometries as the surfaces of breaking sea waves are. After a thorough analysis of the problem, we show that a solution based on Higher-Order Method of Moments (HO-MoM) combined with Non Uniform Rational Basis Splines (NURBS) meshing technique allows the improvement of the performances of Classical-MoM. In parallel of the work on electromagnetic modeling, we attempt to introduce a hydrodynamic model able to precisely simulate the movement and the deformation of waves near the coast. We choose a hydrodynamic modeling based on Desingularized Method. This methodological approach allows the study of the evolution of waves according to the bottom slope, the relative height and the wave steepness. The combination of the results obtained from the numerical electromagnetic modeling and from the hydrodynamic description allows us to estimate the evolution of the electromagnetic fields scattered by breaking coastal sea waves according to time for three types of standard breaking : spilling, plunging and surging

Passive localization of radar emitters using TDOA measurements

For every theatre of operations, locating the enemy radar emitters is a major concern of EW (Electronic Warfare). This knowledge helps defining the tactical situation in order to take appropriate actions. The traditional techniques of passive localization consist in direction finding, either using an interferometer or amplitude difference measurements. Although these methods have proven their reliability, there are some constraints relative to their use, and the accuracy they achieve can be overcome. TDOA (Time Difference Of Arrival) localization can provide better performance in terms of position accuracy by using the difference in delay measured between two distant receivers. This improvement in accuracy comes at a cost: it is necessary to conceive acomplex multi-platform system. In this manuscript, the complete processing chain is detailed thoroughly, from the emitted signal to the final estimate of the target coordinates. This thesis aims to identify the key steps of the overall processing, and to develop solutions in order to improve them. For each of step, solutions are illustrated with real data acquired from an experimental system specially conceived for this thesis, as well as from airborne and spaceborne ESM (ElectronicSupport Measure). This study focuses on the following steps, which affect the final localization performance: reception of the signal, estimation of TDOA measurements, time base synchronization and localization algorithms

The purpose of this work is to develop new methods for the detection and the location of radar sources. The developed approach exploits the direct and indirect signals received at the receiving point. In our study, we first develop a model of these signals that takes into account the characteristics of the transmitters and the reflectors. We evaluate this model by simulating a particular case of reflectors detection and location, defined in the literature. Our goal is to use the multipaths to locate emission sources. Most existing methods are based on specular reflections. Methods based on non-specular reflections, to locate emission sources in an unknown environment, are rarely studied in the literature. In our study, we propose a new location method that uses a fixed receiver measuring the Angle of Arrival (AOA) and Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA). In practice, an assignment problem must be solved before locating the emitters and reflectors. The problem is to assign each pair of TDOA-AOA measurements to a given reflector, assuming that each pair has already been assigned to a transmitter. The method developed has been tested and evaluated by using simulated data and real measurements

Modelling roughness effects on propagation of electromagnetic waves in a maritime environment: a hybrid approach

    No full text
WOSInternational audienceThis study presents work on radar links in the maritime environment. In order to understand and to optimise these links, the author have modelled electromagnetic wave propagation in the maritime environment, including in the presence of evaporation ducts. This modelling requires good propagation domain characterisation (maritime atmosphere, evaporation ducts etc.) and good modelling of the reflective effects of the sea surface (smooth or rough surface). In this study the author present a new method based on sea surface generation using sea spectra developed to model the sea surface roughness effects on electromagnetic wave propagation. Numerical results are given, in different configurations (duct height, transmitter altitude atmospheric conditions etc.), which enable the proposed model to be checked and highlight the interest of accurate roughness modelling in electromagnetic propagation over the sea surface
