Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Design information in managing refurbishment projects in Malaysia

    No full text
Although design cost makes up a small percent of a total project cost, the performance of refurbishment projects are normally considerably affected by design processes. The lack of information in refurbished designs becomes an obstacle for designers to complete tasks successfully during the initial stage of the design process. The objective of this study is to discuss the sources of design information in refurbishment projects. The study has also been extended to demonstrate how different sources of information can affect the performance of refurbishment design. From the results, it is concluded that a site survey was considered the most important method of obtaining design information followed by the client's brief during the design process of refurbishment projects

Integrative mechanisms in the design process of building refurbishment projects / Azlan Shah Ali

This thesis reports an empirical study on uncertainty aspects in the design process of refurbishment projects in Malaysia. The study focuses on the identification of the project variables that are associated with design performance. The investigation also introduced the functions of integrative mechanisms, which consist of coordination devices and the degree of involvement of key participants in decision-making, as a means to integrate management into the design process. This is paramount in order to increase information processing capacity during the design process. The study adopted a triangulation technique that combined both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. One-thousand-five-hundred-and-fifty-two (1552) questionnaires were sent out to registered professional architects in the preliminary questionnaire survey to partially validate the theoretical framework of the study and to obtain a general profile of refurbishment design activities in Malaysia and a 24 percent response rate was achieved. In addition, 21 semi-structured interviews were carried out with selected respondents. The third part of the triangulation involved a final questionnaire survey. Eighty-two (82) out of 234 questionnaires from the final questionnaire were found to be useful and formed a database for data analysis purposes. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used in the data analysis for both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study identified fifteen (15) dominant project variables concerned with the design process of refurbishment projects and, of those, eight variables were found to be significantly correlated to design performance. The variables are: availability of design information, structural content, services content, statutory requirements, clients' attributes, clients' needs, design fees and project funding. The greater part of design process suffers from uncertainty nature of the projects. Almost half of refurbishment projects prepare design with less than 70 percent information available. It was also found that integrative mechanisms contribute toward the improvement of the design performance. All coordination devices were found to be significantly associated with at least one of the performance variables. In addition, a high degree of involvement by architect and M&E engineer during the construction stage improved refurbishment design performance. The design performance recorded more than three-quarters of refurbishment projects exceed the targeted design time and cost. From the findings, it could be concluded that the major part of the design process of refurbishment projects suffered from the uncertain nature of the projects. The implementation of integrative mechanisms indicated the possibility of improving some of the design performance. However, the use of integrative mechanisms in the design process is based mainly on the degree of uncertainty that occurs in refurbishment projects

Investment effect in influencing the economic surrounding based on countries income level / Azlan Shah Ali

Investment is one of the important models in stabilizing and influencing the economic growth. Investment effect may vary across countries based on the policy and economic condition of a country. Total Investment that divided mainly into Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Direct Domestic Investment (DDI) will be used as dependant variable to test it relationship and effect toward economic surrounding such as Inflation, Tax and Unemployment rate. This study will be based on panel data on 42 countries that are mainly from developing countries. The countries will then be divided into four different level of income that will showed the relationship on FDI inflow and DDI towards Inflation, Unemployment and Tax revenue from 1970 to 2010. The result indicates different impact and consequences of different economic surrounding towards FDI inflow and DDI. Besides that, the relationship in investment itself between FDI inflow and DDI will also be examined based on the Granger Causality effect

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
