    Towards the tumble resistant microlight

    The tumble mode is a pitching departure from controlled flight which leads to a pitch autorotation that is generally unrecoverable – resulting in vertical ground impact, usually preceded by in-flight breakup (the mechanism for which, surprisingly, can sometimes prevent loss of life). This was identified in work led by the British Microlight Aircraft Association beginning in 1997 as a response to a number of fatal accidents in Rogallo winged microlight aeroplanes, although the tumble is also known to occur to hang-gliders. This paper explains how this class of aeroplane is controlled, and how it has been found that they can enter the tumble mode. The mechanism by which the tumble can be entered is described. This has led to work showing how flight testing can be used to establish and demonstrate resistance to tumble entry – particularly important with increasing number of very high performance flexwings. These flight tests will be explained, together with the significance of the results. Recent accident investigation work has also shown a new mechanism of tumble entry, through partial failure of the A-frame structure and the pitch-trimmer mechanism. Also described is a possible relevance to well known historical accidents to flying wing aeroplanes– specifically the YB-49 and dH-108, and discovered data on the characteristics of the BKB-1flying wing glider; are also described

    The cycle of broadcasts about explorers of the natural history living in 19th and 20th centuries

    Short profiles of researchers, educators and activists interested in natural sciences and tourism became presented as broadcasts over the radio station – Radio Krakow. At 2013 they were edited by the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, as a compact disc entitled „Worth the memory – known and unknown”, which contains 114 such records. Each broadcast was elaborated and noted as one page by the first co -author (SWA), prepared to presentation by the second co -author (JS) and recorded in the radio-studio as a conversation led by both of them. Four diagrams illustrate selected att ributes of broadcasts: the date of birth of presented persons, their age, the main field of interest or activity and the year of broadcasting. The edited programme aroused a great interest and in consequence the cycle of broadcasts was not fi nished and is still continued

    Artykuł przedstawia analizę i interpretację (w konwencji close reading) opowiadania Witolda Gombrowicza Pamiętnik Stefana Czarnieckiego z tomu Pamiętnik z okresu dojrzewania z 1933 roku (zamieszczonego po wojnie w tomie Bakakaj). Autor interpretuje to opowiadanie jako opowieść o życiu z piętnem, które wynika ze społecznego działania antysemityzmu. Jednocześnie jednak wskazuje, że występujące w tekście konceptualizacje „rasy” bardzo wyraźnie i często łączą się z rozważaniami dotyczącymi męskości i niemęskości głównego bohatera. Autor dowodzi – powołując się na prace historyczne (George L. Mosse) oraz teoretyczno-historycznoliterackie (Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Alan Sinfeld) – że „niemęskość” łączy narracje dotyczące żydowskości i homoseksualności. Ta druga kwestia może ukrywać się pod pierwszą, co jednocześnie stanowi aporię tekstu Witolda Gombrowicza. Poprzez przywołanie książek biograficznych (Tadeusz Kępiński, Ewa Siedlecka) autor sugeruje nieoczywisty, lecz głęboko autobiograficzny wymiar opowiadania.The article presents the analysis and interpretation (in the form of a close reading) of Witold Gombrowicz’s story: Diary of Stefan Czarniecki from the volume Diary of Adolescence 1933 (included after the Second World War in the volume Bakakaj). The author interprets the story as narrative about life with the stigma that results from the social effects of anti-Semitism. However, he shows that the conceptualizations of “race” are often very clearly combined with the considerations about masculinity and effeminacy of the main hero. The author shows – referring to the historical works (George L. Mosse) and theoretical and literary criticism (Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Alan Sinfeld) that “effiminacy” combines narratives about Jewishness and male homosexuality in a complex way, which at the same time constitutes the aporia of Gombrowicz’s text. Author suggests not obvious, but deeply autobiographical dimension of the story by referring to the biographical books (Tadeusz Kępiński, Ewa Siedlecka)

    Površje Poljske Jure se že od paleogena razvija v zelo spremenljivih klimatskih pogojih. Gre za ravnik (peneplen), posejan s številnimi monadnoki iz gorjnejurskega masivnega apnenca, ki jih obdaja manj odporni, tanko plastoviti apnenec iste starosti. Miocenski tektonski fazi je sledilo zakrasevanje, v planoto so se zarezale globoke doline, nastalo pa je tudi več jamskih nivojev. V pleistocenu je periglacialna klima pospešila kongelifrakcijo in sprostitev monadnokov. Združbe mehkužcev kažejo na antropogeno in klimatsko pogojeno spreminjanje površja in okolja v zadnjih deset tisočih letih. Izredna geološka in biološka pestrost področja sta zaščitena.The relief of the Polish Jura Chain developed since Paleogene under climatic conditions changing considerably. Their main components are a peneplain crowned by numerous monadnocks, generated as hard-rocks on Upper Jurassic massive limestones (bioherms, carbonate buildups) surrounded by less resistant platy and bedded limestones of the same age. After the Miocene tectonic phase and following karstification deep valleys dissected the top surface of the plateau and cave levels connected with rocky terraces had been formed. During the Pleistocene the periglacial climate accelerated the congelifraction and relaxation of monadnocks. The modification of landforms and the environment in last ten thousand years, indicated by assemblages of molluscs was controlled by both climatic and anthopogenic factors. The geo- and biodiversity closely related to one another are still under the nature protection

    Jan Sarnicki – the professor of secondary school in Wadowice

    Jan Sarnicki was born in Brzesko on December 22, 1904. He spend his early childhood in Brzeżany (Podolia) and just after beginning of the First World War moved with his parents to Wadowice. In years he was a pupil of the secondary school in Wadowice, in which he passed the maturity examination on May 29, 1923 to undertake the study in the Medical Faculty of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. A year later he transferred himself to the Philosophical Faculty with the specialization in the field of geography, becoming a student of few famous university professors, such as: L. Sawicki, W. Szajnocha, J. Nowak and J. Smoleński – his scientific protector. Under the direction of the last mentioned he prepared and wrote the doctor thesis: Western Carpathians in the light of relative heighs. The manuscript of this text is up today preserved in the Archive of Jagiellonian University. Twice, but unfortunately without the success he sat the examination from the philosophy, what made him impossible to get a doctor’s degree. On the other hand he passed successful the State-examination authorizing to teaching in secondary schools. In addition three times he held the training and military exercises to obtained finally the degree of Second Lieutenant. J. Sarnicki undertook the professional work in year 1931 as the teacher of private secondary school in Vilnius, and two years later moved to Wadowice and continued this job as the teacher of geography. Karol Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II was his schoolboy at that time. Simultaneously he began to draw block diagrams and relief maps serving as didactic helps. More then 60 such drawings were made in Vilnius and exhibited in schoolclasses. This activity was continued after the return to Wadowice, namely on the request of the Company of Friends of the Skiing he made 5 relief maps of few mountain groups of Carpathians, particularly attractive as ski-lands. In June, 1937 he married with Maria Grüner, his girl-friend from Wadowice and younger colleague from the university. Just before the Second World War J. Sarnicki was mobilized as the Second Lieutenant. Three weeks later he crossed the Hungarian border and after next few months forced his way to the Polish Army in France, became internee and placed in the soldier camp in Idron, on the northern foreland of Pyrenees. He designed and participated in the in construction of the chapel, which many years later was entered on the list of national monuments of France. Repeatedly he painted and drew this little chapel. Twice he attempted an escape through Spain to England but unfortunately the second time round he was left in Andorra, caught by Germans and settled in the concentration camp Dora near Buchenwald were had the heavy accident. Soon after the end of the war J. Sarnicki came back to Wadowice and undertook the duty as the teacher of geography and geology in the secondary school. Meantime he drawn more than twenty block diagrams ad relief maps again and led trips with pupils to explain geological and geomorphologic details. Aged 65 years he passed onto pension and moved himself to Biała, were his mother and sister lived. Then he created next plastic maps, and the most well-known from among are maps of Monte Cassino, and of dams on the Skawa River in Grodzisko and in Świnna Poręba. Moreover he painted numerous small images, mainly landscapes of Beskidy Mts., surroundings of Wadowice, different little chapels and elements of sacral architecture. Two maps were send to the Rome for his schoolboy, the Pope John Paul II. One of them was the panorama of Monte Cassino and the other – the view over religious foot-pats with numerous chapels from Kalwaria and Lackonona. At November 1984 J. Sarnicki was decorated with the order – the Knight’s Cross Polonia Restituta. He died 26 January, 1985 lie in one’s grave on the cemetery in the town Biała. He deserve a regard as the talented and well educated person, the meritorious teacher, the soldier-patriot and the notable author of block diagrams and relief maps, which are a head of one’s time

    Karl Kolbenheyer (1841–1901) – teacher, naturalist, tourist

    Karl Kolbenheyer was born on May 28, 1841 in Bielsko. After attending a lower secondary school in Cieszyn, he began studies in classical languages (Greek and Latin) at universities in Vienna and Jena, then he worked as a teacher in lower secondary schools in Lewocza, Cieszyn, and Bielsko. The research he undertook included botanical studies, measurements of absolute elevation, and meteorological observations in the Western Beskids as well as in the Tatra Mountains. The results of the studies were printed in German, Austrian, Polish, and Hungarian publications. He found species of plants not known earlier to exist in the area of Cieszyn and Bielsko. The measurements of elevations he made of characteristic points of landscape (more than 500) were used for cartographic purposes. From 1866 on, he was a member of Physiographic Commission of Kraków Scientific Society, and later of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, which financially supported his field work. Karl Kolbenheyer was one of the founders of the Beskidenverein – a German tourist organisation – and managed its branch in Bielsko. He prepared two tourist guides: the guide to Tatra Mountains – Die hohe Tatra (ten editions), and to the Beskids – Führer durch die Beskiden… (two editions). These guides contributed to the remarkable propagation of tourism. Karl Kolbenheyer died on February 1, 1901, and was buried at the Old Evangelical Cemetery in Bielsko

    Fluvial terraces as a record of the Kamienica and Ochotnica valleys evolution, Gorce Mountains

    Bibliogr.Seven levels of fluvial terraces, of Pleistocene and Holocene age, are present in the Kamienica and Ochotnica valleys. The oldest terraces date from the Sanian 1 cold stage and they lie at the heights of up to 74 m above the present river channel. The fluvial terraces in the Kamienica and Ochotnica valleys record both, tectonic uplift and Pleistocene climatic oscillations. The presence of strath terraces, some of them of Holocene age, indicates permanent uplift of the area throughout the Quaternary. The valleys were deepening mainly during transitional glacial-interglacial periods, and less intensely during the interglacial-glacial transitions and interglacial periods. Aggradation took place in glacial and partly in interglacial periods. The valleys widened, with formation of the strath terraces, mainly during the interglacial periods. A general tendency to narrowing of the valley bottoms has prevailed since Mezopleistocene time, but not every phase in the evolution of the valleys resulted in narrower valleys bottoms. The average rate of incising for both valleys since middle Pleistocene was calculated at ca. 0.2 mm/year. The rate of incision was greatest at the transitional stages and in Eemian and Holocene. The valleys differed in the amount of incision at individual stages of their evolution and the most distinct difference is marked since the Eemian until now. In this time the lowest part Ochotnica Valley deepened more than twice the value for corresponding part of the Kamienica valley. This seems to be a result of different rates of neotectonic uplift.W dolinach Kamienicy i Ochotnicy zachowały się do dziś fragmenty siedmiu poziomów teras fluwialnych powstałych w plejstocenie i holocenie. Najstarsze fragmenty teras powstały w okresie zlodowacenia Sanu 1 i mają do 74 m wysokości względnej. W terasach rzecznych obu dolin zapisane są zarówno pionowe ruchy skorupy ziemskiej, jak i rytmiczne oscylacje klimatu w plejstocenie. Obecność cokołów skalnych teras, również holoceńskich, wskazuje na ciągłe wypiętrzanie obszaru, które trwa nieprzerwanie w czasie czwartorzędu. Rozcinanie i pogłębianie dolin miało miejsce głównie podczas okresów przejściowych glacjał-interglacjał. Dodatkowo również w okresach przejściowych interglacjał-glacjał i podczas interglacjałów. Natomiast akumulacja aluwiów w dnach dolin zachodziła podczas glacjałów, a częściowo również w interglacjałach. Poszerzanie den dolin i powstawanie powierzchni erozyjnych miało miejsce głównie podczas interglacjałów. Od mezoplejstocenu występuje tendencja do zmniejszania szerokości den dolinnych, ale nie w każdym kolejnym etapie rozwoju dna dolin były węższe. Średnie tempo pogłębiania obu dolin od środkowego plejstocenu do dziś wynosi około 0,2 mm/rok. Maksymalne natężenie rozcinania dolin przypada na okresy przejściowe i interglacjał eemski oraz holocen. Wielkość rozcięcia w poszczególnych etapach rozwoju w każdej z dolin była inna, a najbardziej widoczna różnica zaznacza się od interglacjału eemskiego do dziś. Na ten czas przypada bowiem ponad dwukrotnie większe pogłębienie doliny Ochotnicy niż doliny Kamienicy (odcinki ujściowe rzek) – jest to zapewne efekt zróżnicowanych ruchów neotektonicznych.rysunki, schematypełny teks

    Geographical Commission of Scientific Academies in Krakow

    Before the First World War problems related to geographical sciences were practiced in Physiographical Commission of the Cracow Scientific Society and the Academy of Arts and Sciences, namely in Meteorological Section and Orographic-Geological Section. During the interwar period the Geographical Commission was established by the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1924 and was active until 1938. In this year the Board of the Academy decided to dissolve the Commission. Simultaneously, the proposal to appoint a new Geographical Commission was introduced but till the outbreak of the Second World War it could not be carried out. After the suspension of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences extorted in 1952 by Communist authorities, the Commission of Geographical Sciences was formed in 1966 by the Cracow Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It worked till 2011 and then was newly constituted or correctly reactivated as the Geographical Commission of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences
