Fantasy and metafictionality in Walter Moers' Zamonien novels

    No full text
Walter Moers is one of the most important authors of contemporary Fantastic Literature in German. Since his first novel, in 1999, the author turned into a bestselling writer. His last six novels all share a common element: the fictive continent of "Zamonien", a fantastic world created by Moers. In this invented world the reader finds a lot of adventures, battles, journeys, conquests, mysteries, fights, dangers, unusual creatures and unknown places. If on one hand, the fantastic works of Moers respond to conventions of the Fantasy genre, on the other hand, they offer a new literary proposal, which breaks some conventions of this genre. This is particularly the case of the metafictional elements, which are very frequent in his novels. This paper intends to introduce a novel of Walter Moers, 'Die Stadt der träumenden Bücher' (2004), and to discuss its constitutive elements, which classify the book as a work in the Fantasy genre, emphasizing especially the metafictional aspects.

This thesis analyzes two novels by contemporary German author Walter Moers, Die Stadt der Träumenden Bücher (City of Dreaming Books) (2004) and Das Labyrinth der Träumenden Bücher (Labyrinth of Dreaming Books) (2011). Thus far, there only exists a relatively meager corpus of research on Moers because his texts have often been marginalized as ‘trivial.’ Moers only recently started to receive more attention in scholarly contexts and this thesis intents to help filling this still existing void. This thesis starts with an overview of Walter Moers as an author, his works in general, and focuses on the two novels Stadt der Träumenden Bücher and Labyrinth der Träumenden Bücher. Moers is known for using an abundance of intertextual and intermedial references in his texts, and the main analysis of this thesis focuses on ‘how’ and ‘why’ Moers uses intertextuality and intermediality. This thesis comes to the conclusion that Moers utilizes intertextual and intermedial references in order to deconstruct a supposed juxtaposition of – so called – ‘canonical literature’ and ‘trivial literature’ in a playful fashion

Lysophospholipids control integrin-dependent adhesion in splenic B cells through G(i) and G(12)/G(13) family G-proteins but not through G(q)/G(11)

Integrin-mediated adhesion is a crucial step in lymphocyte extravasation and homing. We show here that not only the chemokines CXCL12 and CXCL13 but also the lysophospholipids sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) and lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) enhance adhesion of murine follicular and marginal zone B cells to ICAM-1 in vitro. This process involves clustering of integrin LFA-1 and is blocked by pertussis toxin, suggesting that G(i) family G-proteins are involved. In addition, lysophospholipid-induced adhesion on ICAM-1 depends on Rho and Rhokinase, indicative of an involvement of G(12)/G(13), possibly also G(q)/G(11) family G-proteins. We used G(12)/G(13)- or G(q)/G(11)-deficient B cells to study the role of these G-protein families in lysophospholipid-induced adhesion and found that the pro-adhesive effects of LPA and S1P are completely abrogated in G(12)/G(13)-deficient marginal zone B cells, reduced in G(12)/G(13)-deficient follicular B cells, and normal in G(q)/G(11)-deficient B cells. We also show that loss of lysophospholipid-induced adhesion results in disinhibition of migration in response to the follicular chemokine CXCL13, which might contribute to the abnormal localization of splenic B cell populations observed in B cell-specific G(12)/G(13)-deficient mice in vivo. Taken together, this study shows that lysophospholipids regulate integrin-mediated adhesion of splenic B cells to ICAM-1 through G(i) and G(12)/G(13) family G-proteins but not through G(q)/G(11)

G12/G13 family G proteins regulate marginal zone B cell maturation, migration, and polarization

G protein-coupled receptors play an important role in the regulation of lymphocyte functions such as migration, adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Although the role of G(i) family G proteins has been intensively studied, no in vivo data exist with respect to G12/G13 family G proteins. We show in this study that mice that lack the G protein alpha-subunits G alpha12 and G alpha13 selectively in B cells show significantly reduced numbers of splenic marginal zone B (MZB) cells, resulting in a delay of Ab production in response to thymus-independent Ags. Basal and chemokine-induced adhesion to ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, two adhesion molecules critically involved in MZB localization, is normal in mutant B cells, and the same is true for chemokine-induced migration. However, migration in response to serum and sphingosine 1-phosphate is strongly increased in mutant MZB cells, but not in mutant follicular B cells. Live-cell imaging studies revealed that G alpha12/G alpha13-deficient MZB cells assumed more frequently an ameboid form than wild-type cells, and pseudopod formation was enhanced. In addition to their regulatory role in serum- and sphingosine 1-phosphate-induced migration, G12/G13 family G proteins seem to be involved in peripheral MZB cell maturation, because also splenic MZB cell precursors are reduced in mutant mice, although less prominently than mature MZB cells. These data suggest that G12/G13 family G proteins contribute to the formation of the mature MZB cell compartment both by controlling MZB cell migration and by regulating MZB cell precursor maturation

Die Stadt der träumenden Bücher (The city of dreaming books) is a novel written in 2004 by Walter Moers. The narrative takes place in the fantastic world of Zamonien a place inhabited by dragons and other curious creatures and focuses on the journey of the protagonist Hildegunst von Mythenmetz, a young dragon-writer, who finds a mysterious text, which would be, according to his opinion, the best book ever written on the fictional continent. He starts a journey looking for the unknown author of those words. His quest leads him to \"Buchhaim\", the city of dreaming books, where many adventures but also dangers wait for him. Moers pretends to be only the translator of the \"zamonia language\" and the illustrator of the biography of Hildegunst von Mythenmetz, which would be the true author of Die Stadt der träumenden Bücher. Shortly after the publication of the novel, fans of Moers tried to decipher the riddles of literary pieces and unknown authors references within the story. The book became, then, a fantastic narrative about the literature and the literary world. This work intends to analyze the narrative structure of Die Stadt der träumenden Bücher, especially the aspect of metafictionality. Therefore, will be presented, firstly, a brief resume of the story. Then we will analyze the main characteristics of the genre of Fantasy, trying to identify examples in the novel which establishes this genre. Finally, we will analyze distinctive metafictional elements found in the work, in order to demonstrate the tricks that the author makes with fictionality. Moers\'s novel deals in an ironic and parodistic way with the question of the boundaries between fiction and reality, which occupies part of the literary critic. This theme takes its course in a game in which a dinosaur is the author of a best-seller and agrees to be interviewed by German media (FAZ and ZDF). The humor is undoubtedly the most remarkable characteristic of Walter Moers. The main purpose of this work is to investigate the connections between the metafictionality and the huge success of the novel, which reached such a diversified audience

Un juste retour des choses? Or the Process in Reverse: "Illustrating” Texts, “Textualising” Illustrations (Walter Moers and Gustave Doré)

International audienceThe paper examines what happens when a text “illustrates” images originally conceived to adorn other fictions, how it relates to narrative tension (Baroni) and especially how it builds up expectations that vary according to the target audience (the children, who discover the illustrations set in the new narrative; the adult readers who are aware of the original stories). The case study is based on a book for children by German author Walter Moers, A Wild Ride Through the Night. Suggested by 21 illustrations by Gustave Doré (2001). The analysis shows that the anticipation built up by the images is in tension with the narrative imagined around them. The images thus operate both as pause and catalyst, engaging a dialogue with the narrative and the readers’ previous knowledge, acting as an invitation to look beyond and differentl
