Empirical Test of Affine Stochastic Discount Factor Model of Currency Pricing

    No full text
In this note, I conduct an empirical investigation of the affine stochastic discount factor model proposed by Backus, Foresi and Telmer (2001), who showed that such a model might be able to explain the forward premium anomaly. Evidence presented here suggests that the model can reproduce the forward premium anomaly only by placing restrictions on the behavior of spot and forward exchange rates that are not consistent with the data. The model assumes that an increase in the forward premium must be accompanied by an increase in volatilities of the forward premium and of the exchange rate depreciation. I find that this assumption is not supported by the data. When I relax the model by allowing the forward premium to vary without necessarily affecting conditional second moments, the model no longer reproduces the forward premium anomaly. Thus, I conclude that the model can reproduce the anomaly only by forcing a linear heteroskedastic process that is not supported by the data.

    No full text
A need for developing efficient schemes for deep horizon opening in the quarries with taking into account each type of transports is shown. Dependences for fixing locations of the transfer points with minimal expenditure of energy for the motor transport are disclosed. The author considers a possibility to mine highwalls in the quarry of the “Lebedinsky MPP" Company with drivage and formation of entry sliding rail off-ramp with maximally possible ruling grade and with mining loose overburden by hydromechanical facilities. It is proposed to take into account in future designs further deepening of open-cast mining operations below horizon of estimated geological reserves because of transport communications transferred from spoil bank to the highwall

A Study of the Stochastic Behavior of Durable Goods Consumption

    No full text
The author of this thesis examines the stochastic behavior of durables consumption in the rational expectations/permanent income hypothesis framework. The testing in this paper parallels the studies conducted by other researchers, who basing their work mainly on quarterly data rejected the frictionless rational expectations/permanent income hypothesis. The distinctive feature of this thesis is that the models are examined using monthly instead of quarterly data. The results of the estimation are compared to the results based on quarterly data. The results show that estimates obtained using monthly data seem to be more consistent with the frictionless rational expectations/permanent income hypothesis than the estimates from quarterly data. Then, by using two subsets of the monthly data representing the first and the last twelve years of a 37 year period, the models are reexamined to explore the possibility of change in the stochastic behavior of personal expenditures on durable goods over time. This results suggest a change in influence of liquidity constraints on the time series behavior of durable goods consumption over the last four decades

The development of affective behavioral complexes: a level-based model

    No full text
The author discusses sources for, problems in, and ways of forming a hierarchical model of the development of whole affective behavioral complexes, not just mechanisms of emotional regulation, as was done in the original level-based model elaborated by Victor Lebedinsky. The author describes specific traits of affective behavioral complexes and types of links between them on different levels. Primitive affective behavioral complexes, either isolated or rigidly linked, dominate on the lower three levels. On the fourth level attachment behavior plays a “star” role, mediating and regulating all vital behaviors. On the fifth level symbolic activity permanently rebuilds the experience obtained on the lower levels. The author discusses links between affective behavioral complexes and nuclear personality formations

Influence of Polluted River Water on Human Health (on the Example of the Sumy Region)

The article examines the impact of polluted river water on public health (on the example of the Sumy region). It has been clarified with the help of pair correlation that the indicators of river water pollution (water pollution index and trophy-saprobiological index) onto the incidence of the population, the prevalence of all types of diseases of the Sumy region population, in particular infectious and parasitious, does not directly affect. The article describes indirect ways of the impact of contaminated river water on the human body, through the fish. Special attention is paid to such a disease as opisthorchiasis, the endemic focus of which is located on the territory of the region, because of which over the past 5 years 62% of all patients with this disease in the country have been identified in the region. The article deals with the path of affection of intermediate hosts by the causative agent of the disease, a detailed analysis of the situation on the incidence of opisthorchiasis in the Sumy region from 2005 to 2016. It was found certain relationship between the areas with the maximum indices of flooding (raising the water table) of the territory (basins of the Desna and Vorskla rivers) and high incidence rates of opisthorchiasis (Shostkinsky district and city Shostka, Seredina-Budsky, Krolevetsky, Belopolsky districts) have been presented. It was also found some coincidence between the territories with high flooding indices (basins of the Seim and Sula rivers) and and high incidence rates of opisthorchiasis (Lebedinsky, Nedrygailovsky, Romensky districts). It is established that the peculiarities of the hydrographic network, unfavorable natural processes such as raising the water table and flooding, intensified by human activities, contamination of reservoirs with sewage, promote the spread of such heavy helminthiasis as opisthorchiasis. In conclusion, the author says that the problem under consideration is acute and urgent for the region, is the result of a combination of a number of factors, both natural and anthropogenic, and requires further research and disclosure

Towards a Differently Politicised Shostakovich:an Analytical, Hermeneutical and Feminist Exploration of the Opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District

    No full text
This thesis provides a feminist interpretation of Shostakovich’s opera, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District (1932) that draws on musical analysis – particularly of tonality – and explores cultural contexts – particularly the history of Soviet women – in order to do so. If Shostakovich scholarship has been dominated by overtly politicised readings hitherto, this study contributes to the broadening of research methods and areas through which we might examine these compositions – yet for its own, differently political ends. Similarly, it adds to that limited body of literature – in the field of Shostakovich specifically, yet also in musicology in general – that profitably combines both analytical and hermeneutical approaches. Lady Macbeth is often held to be a ‘feminist’ opera: an assessment that is highly problematic. A conventional feminist musical analysis of the work reveals its fundamental tonal-dramatic narrative to tell a familiar story of the heroine Katerina’s struggle and subjugation; moreover, her final defeat is endorsed by aspects of the musical setting in a manner that is regressive. A richer contextual reading demonstrates that more is at stake here: Shostakovich’s opera is shown to embody a shift from experiment to thermidor that took place in the 1920s and 1930s in various cultural and social spheres, and its strategies of endorsement also work to celebrate a move to traditionalism with far-reaching historical implications. Yet several analytical and hermeneutical readings of short extracts from the piece uncover moments in which its monolithic and pessimistic message is complicated: a project in line with other recent feminist and critical musicological developments
