Scattered remarks about the 'non-genre' of Statius' Silvae. The construction of a minor canon?
No full textFar from any intent of more or less antifrastic understatement, the proposed title mirrors the fractured, discontinuous and asystematic articulation inevitably assumed by an eidographical reflection about Statius' Silvae. These are texts modeled by the kairos and, as such, constitutionally informed by the principles of varietas and Mischung, which, considered both singularly and as a sylloge, escape any attempt of eidographical classification. Rare, elusive and unsatisfactory in relation to the real structure and complexity either of the compositions or, even more so, of the collection, are also the generic labels explicitly provided by the author. Instead, what seems to appear with a certain evidence, even if among the scattered threads of Statius' metapoetic reflection, is a negative definition of the Silvae as 'non-genre' in relation to the genre par excellence: the epos. My observations precisely concentrate on this relation, on the categories of improvisation vs retractatio, orality vs writing, celeritas / festinatio vs callimachism, Greekness vs Romanity and on the problem of identifying a literary 'canon' of reference
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textIn silv. 3,5, uno dei rari testi della silloge staziana di intonazione personale, non scritto su commissione, il poeta si rivolge alla moglie per invitarla a seguirlo nel suo trasferimento da Roma alla natia Napoli in un momento di svolta della sua parabola biotica e poetica che induce a rielssioni e bilanci. Nel componimento, che Stazio stesso definisce ora egloga ora sermo, schiudendo una pluralità di suggestioni e modelli eidografici, sull’intento suasorio prevale quello autoriflessivo. In un autore molto incline all’autocostruzione di un’identità poetica anche le strategie per dissipare i dubbi e le remore della consorte, che passano essenzialmente attraverso l’encomio di una sposa fedele che ha sempre satellitarmente orbitato intorno alla vita e alla carriera del marito e l’esaltazione della propria terra natale, diventano un pretesto per parlare di sé e della propria esperienza poetica. In questo senso anche la dialettica tra Roma e Napoli, due città che hanno ospitato e ispirato anche il vate-icona Virgilio, assume evidenti risonanze metapoetiche facendosi ?gura di una serie di dinamiche interne alla produzione di Stazio e alla sua relazione con il predecessore

No full textIl cosiddetto ‘canone’ di Quintiliano, ossia il piano di letture proposto all’aspirante retore in inst. 10.1.46 ss., costituisce una lista davvero molto particolare che non si identifica né con il tipo del canone, ovvero una lista d’eccellenza ristretta e chiusa, né con quello del catalogo e nemmeno con quello del syllabus scolastico. Il suo principale tratto identitario consiste nell’essere una lista aperta in senso sia cronologico sia assiologico. Due delle sue possibili matrici culturali sono individuate nella Heldenschau dell’Eneide, il catalogo prolettico degli eroi di 6,756 ss. e, tramite la mediazione di quest’ultimo ma non solo, nell’istituto socio-culturale delle imagines degli antenati
