This article presents three previously unpublished letters written by the Sienese physician and draughtsman Alessandro Ricci during his first journey to Egypt between 1817 and 1818. Long considered elusive, these documents—addressed to Francesco Spannocchi-Piccolomini and discovered between 2010 and 2024—shed new light on Ricci’s early months in Egypt, his expectations, disappointments, and gradual shift from medicine to exploration. The letters trace his arrival in Alexandria, his disillusionment with medical prospects in Cairo, and his first encounters with Egypt’s antiquities, including a vivid description of the Pyramids. They also illuminate the networks of patronage, diplomacy, and commerce that shaped his career, revealing how Ricci navigated financial difficulty and uncertain employment while positioning himself within the circles of Henry Salt and other key figures. As the earliest surviving testimonies of Ricci in Egypt, these documents refine our understanding of his formative experiences and motivations as an emerging explorer

A long-standing problem in concurrent object-oriented programming is finding a sound and effective way to integrate active entities - being them actors, active objects, processes - with plain passive objects. Even if the problem is quite old, this is still an open issue: different kinds of approaches have been proposed in literature - also recently - each bringing some benefits and drawbacks. In this paper we describe a proposal based on agent-oriented abstractions, called ALOO. ALOO can be conceived as a conservative extension of sequential OOP languages, so plain old objects, adopting agents and agent organizations as first-class abstractions to model the active side of systems, encapsulating the decentralized control. The fundamental turn of software towards concurrency that we are witnessing today has a strong impact on modeling and programming. How to properly integrate ΟΟ modelling/programming and concurrency is still an open problem, in spite of the many ad-hoc mechanisms, libraries and frameworks that have been introduced so far. We believe that such integration requires modelling and programming paradigms that make it possible to naturally exploit concurrency, decentralization of control and interaction as main ingredients of problem solving, as well as of program design and coding. In this paper we elaborate this point by discussing some main approaches in literature that propose such integration: in particular we review actors and concurrent objects first, then a recent proposal based on agentoriented programming

Programming with Actors - State-of-the-Art and Research Perspectives
After more than 40 years by their invention, actors are nowadays in the mainstream, as a reference model for designing and developing concurrent and distributed systems.
The actor model was introduced by Carl Hewitt and colleagues in 1973 [7], as a mathematical model of concurrent computation in which actors play the role of universal primitives of concurrent computation. In response to a message that it receives, an actor can: make local decisions, create more actors, send more messages, and determine how to respond to the next message received. Actors may modify their own private state, but can only affect each other through messages (avoiding the need for any locks). Since its conception, the model served both as a framework for a theoretical understanding of computation and as the theoretical basis for several practical implementations of concurrent systems [6].
In 80ies and 90ies the model has been a main reference to understand and define the extension of Object-Oriented Programming towards concurrency, e.g. Concurrent OOP [1, 2, 11, 4].
On the mainstream side, the panorama has been dominated by sequential programming until middle of 2000ies, when the “concurrency revolution” started to raise [9,5]. Since then, concurrent, asynchronous, distributed programming have gradually become part of everyday design and programming.
If 80ies and 90ies were dominated by a vision in which mainstream pro- gramming and programming paradigms could abstract from concurrency and distribution, in recent years there has been an increasing awareness that this is not feasible (e.g., if you want to build reactive applications1), and – moreover – first-class concurrent abstractions, such actors and message passing, provide an effective modeling and designing power to deal with the complexity of modern applications and application domains [10, 3].
AGERE! workshop started in SPLASH in 2011 to investigate the definition of suitable levels of abstraction, programming languages, and platforms to support and promote a decentralized mindset in solving problems, designing systems, programming applications, including the teaching of computer programming [8]. That is, the question is how to think about problems and programs taking de- centralization of control and interaction as the most essential features. To this end, actors and agents were taken as key main references, recognised as two main broad families of concepts, abstractions and programming tools described in literature that explicitly promote such a decentralized thinking.
The set of papers collected in this volume originated from the AGERE! work- shop series – last edition was in 2017 – and concern the application of actor-based approaches to mainstream application domains and the discussion of related issues

Alessandro Ricci (ca. 1795-1834) era un medico e disegnatore senese che fra 1817 e 1822 viaggiò in Egitto e in Nubia al servizio di Henry Salt e William J. Bankes. Venne ingaggiato per eseguire una ricognizione epigrafica di diversi siti archeologici nel Sinai, Oasi di Siwa e in Nubia. Ricci ha lasciato un resoconto delle sue esplorazioni, di cui questa tesi rappresenta l’edizione cirtica: Viaggi del Dottor Alessandro Ricci.
Nel Capitolo 1 si cerca di definire lo stato delle relazioni fra la Toscana e l’Egitto nella prima metà del 19 secolo.I Capitoli 2-4 rappresentano la biografia di Ricci. Nel Capitolo 2 si discute la personalità di Ricci e il suo retroterra culturale. Nel Capitolo 3 si tratta la prima esperienza di viaggio in Egittofra 1817 e 1822. Nel Capitolo 4 si delinea l’opera di revisione del manoscritto, la partecipazione alla famosa Spedizione Franco-toscana (1828-29), la malattia e la morte (1834). Il Capitolo 5 si concentra sulle collezioni archeologiche, naturalistiche ed etnografiche di Ricci. Nel Capitolo 6 si discute i Viaggi come un testo: la storia della sua stesura, le caratteristiche codicologiche, gli argomenti trattati, la struttura e lo stile narrativo. Il Capitolo 7, infine, è dedicato alla ricostruzione delle tavole che Ricci aveva originariamente allegato al manoscritto. Segue l’edizione critica dei Viaggi, con più di mille note esplicative, tavole e mappe dettagliate delle regioni visitate.
Abstract
Alessandro Ricci (d. 1834) was a physician and draughtsman from Siena who between 1817 and 1822 travelled in Egypt and Nubia in the service of Henry Salt and William J. Bankes. He was hired to make an epigraphic survey of archaeological sites in Sinai, Siwa Oasis and Nubia, reaching as far as Sennar. Alessandro Ricci left a travel account; Travels of Dr. Alessandro Ricci. Its critical edition is the topic of this dissertation.
In Chapter 1 I tried to point out the state of the relationship between Tuscany and Egypt in the first half of the 19th century. Chapters 2 to 4 represent a biography of Ricci. In Chapter 2 I discussed early sources, defining his personality and cultural background. In Chapter 3 I dealt with his first experience in Egypt between 1817 and 1822. In Chapter 4 I outlined the later life of Ricci, his revision work on the manuscript, his participation in the famous Franco-Tuscan expedition to Egypt and Nubia (1828-29) and eventually his sickness and death (1834). In Chapter 5 I focused on Ricci’s collections of antiquities, ethnographical and natural history objects. In Chapter 6 I discussed the Travels as a text: its story, its physical characteristics, its many topics and, on a literary point of view, its structure and narrative style. Chapter 7, finally, is devoted to the thorough discussion of the plates which Ricci originally attached to the manuscript. The critical edition of the Travels follows, with more than a thousand explicatory notes, plates and detailed maps for the regions visited
