The fancy city life: Kuhl's pipistrelle, Pipistrellus kuhlii, benefits from urbanization

    No full text
Context Urbanisation is often regarded as a major threat to global biodiversity. Although wildlife is frequently affected by urbanisation, some species may actually benefit from it. Bats are among the commonest wild mammals in human-modified areas, and some species seem particularly well suited to exploit urban habitats where they find roosting and foraging opportunities. Aims We investigated habitat selection around roosts of synurbic Kuhl's pipistrelles, Pipistrellus kuhlii, in Italy. Methods We measured the effects of the amount of urban habitat on bat reproductive timing and success in human-modified environments. Key results We found that P. kuhlii selects roosts surrounded by areas featuring urban habitats, especially those subject to urban development. Colonies in cities and suburbs advanced parturition time and produced more pups than those in rural areas. Permanent water sources and artificial lights in the surrounding habitats also seemed to favour the species reproductive success, particularly in developing urban areas. Conclusions Our results showed that this bat benefits from urbanisation and provided new insights on the effects of this major process on animal ecology and conservation in urban environments. Implications Although the ecological flexibility and positive response to urbanisation of P. kuhlii may help explain its recent range expansion, the role of climate change as a potential driver of this process has yet to be tested

Epitrochlear Lymph Node Dissection and Axillary Lymph Node Biopsy. An Unusual Clinical Presentation in a Patient with Forearm Melanoma.

When primary melanomas of the forearm or hand metastasize to a lymph node, they usually affect axillary nodes, but in a small minority of patients epitrochlear node involvement can occur. The relationship between tumordraining axillary and epitrochlear nodes is still unclear, the latter being commonly considered as interval node or node located in a minor node field. The possible involvement of epitrochlear nodes demands anyway a detailed preoperative lymphoscintigraphy as well as a meticulous intraoperative search, even if the finding of positive SLN in the basin is infrequent. We present a case of a forearm melanoma with clinical involvement to epitrochlear nodes and metastasized to an axillary sentinel lymph node, with remaining axillary nodes uninvolved; the video illustrates the features of the case and highlights some technical details associated with epitrochlear lymph node dissection

A Rapid Screening Method for the Identification of a Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism in the Carbonic Anhydrase VI Gene in Studies of Sensitivity to the Bitter Taste of 6-n-Propylthiouracil.

The ability to perceive the bitter taste of 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) is a variable phenotype that has been associated with body mass index (in kg/m2) and linked to food choice and satiety. PROP-sensitive and -nonsensitive individuals are defined as tasters and nontasters, respectively. Sensitivity to PROP is a heritable trait based on the TAS2R38 gene on chromosome 7q34. In a recent study we demonstrated an association between PROP sensitivity and the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2274333 ( + 292A/G) within a coding sequence of the gustin/carbonic anhydrase VI gene. The purpose of this study was to develop a rapid and inexpensive screening method for identification of the rs2274333 SNP in individuals with varying sensitivity to PROP. Our results show that the methodology employed allows distinguishing A/G alleles perfectly, with a simple DNA digestion of a polymerase chain reaction fragment covering the SNP site of interest. So, the polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism assay described in this article can be used as an alternative to sequencing in bitter taster status research, and could be employed as a survey tool in nutrigenomic studies

Eine postmoderne Sicht der internationalen Beziehungen

    No full text
The dramatic changes in international relations characterized by the terms "Complex Interdependence" and "Segmentary Globalization" call for new explanation. The author considers the post-modern approaches, a critical analysis of which he presents, to be one possibility to do that. In studies of international policy, these post-modern influences are gaining ground in disputes with realistic and neo-realistic approaches, and they can also clearly be felt in Latin America. Tomassini, based on the historic experiences of Latin America, forcefully calls for an active and constructive incorporation of the region into international developments. For that, Latin-American societies have to establish modern, and open political as well as economic systems which are able to meet those challenges

Night Butterflies : fragment, re-writing and microfiction in Ejércitos de la oscuridad, by Silvina Ocampo

The four series of fragments compiled under the title Ejércitos de la Oscuridad have been considered as a "night diary" in which the Argentine author Silvina Ocampo left trace of her hours of insomnia. Far from being a collection of rough drafts valuable only for genetic criticism, the fragment, as appears in this volume, proves to be an écriture on its own right, willfully chosen by the author. Repetition with variation, which links many of these fragments to poems and narratives published by Silvina Ocampo during her lifetime, accounts for a strategy of composition that has been acknowledged throughout her writing. This paper aims at showing that many of these fragments can be considered as skillfully accomplished microfictions.Fil: Tomassini, Graciela. Universidad Nacional de Rosari

Sensitivity to 6-n-propylthiouracil is associated with gustin (carbonic anhydrase VI) gene polymorphism, salivary zinc, and body mass index in humans

BACKGROUND: The individual ability to taste 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) may be correlated with body mass index (BMI) and differences in the salivary proteins involved in taste function, such as the zinc-dependent enzyme gustin, which is a trophic factor of taste buds. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the possible association of PROP taste responsiveness with gustin gene polymorphism rs2274333 (A/G), salivary ionic zinc concentrations, and BMI. DESIGN: We measured cognitive eating behaviors and BMI in 75 volunteers (28 men and 47 women; mean plusmn SEM age: 25 plusmn 3 y). The intensity of taste perception evoked by PROP and sodium chloride solutions was estimated to evaluate PROP taster status. Salivary ionic zinc concentrations were measured, and molecular analyses of the gustin gene polymorphism were performed in individuals classified by PROP status by using polymerase chain reaction techniques. RESULTS: We classified subjects as PROP supertasters (n = 27), medium tasters (n = 28), or nontasters (n = 20). Salivary ionic zinc concentrations and BMI were greater in nontasters than in supertasters (P = 0.003 and P = 0.042, respectively). Molecular analyses of gustin DNA showed that allele A and genotype AA were significantly more frequent in supertasters, whereas allele G and genotype GG were significantly more frequent in nontasters (P lt 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: These data showed that responsiveness to PROP is inversely related to BMI and salivary ionic zinc concentrations. The gustin gene dimorphism rs2274333 observed in supertaster and nontaster subjects may influence the protein conformation and, thereby, affect zinc ion binding. Our data showed a direct association between PROP sensitivity and a polymorphism in the gustin gene that is hypothesized to affect its function. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as UNICADBSITB-1
