    Get PDF

Theology and history in the controversy between Albrecht Ritschl and Eduard Zeller

In this chapter, I discuss the relationship between theology and history in midnineteenth-century Germany based on the academic controversy fought between Eduard Zeller (1814–1908) and Albrecht Ritschl (1822–1889) concerning the significance of historical criticism for theology and the importance of Ferdinand Christian Baur’s contribution to a properly historical form of theology.1 As will become evident, this controversy subtly ties in with various problems of the understanding of history, the place of theology in the university, and the role of Wissenschaft in the period after 1848 more generally

Friedrich Schleiermacher und Albrecht Ritschl. Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten in der Theologie des 19. Jahrhunderts

The article considers the relationship between Albrecht Ritschl and Friedrich Schleiermacher. It is argued that beyond the frequent polemics there is both genuine, fundamental agreement and equally fundamental disagreement between the two theologians. Ritschl accepted that Schleiermacher’s ethical insight in the specific interaction of individual and community was pivotal for his own theology, while averring that Schleiermacher had failed to share Kant’s sharp ontological dualism of nature and spirit. This finding leads to far-reaching questions concerning the continuity and discontinuity in 19th-century theological development as well as today’s theological options in the reception of Schleiermacher's thought

Albrecht Ritschl on theology as system: considering the structure of modern theology

    Get PDF
Albrecht Ritschl (1822–1889) is a key representative of nineteenth-century German theology. As such, he is emphatic that dogmatics has to be presented in systematic form. This article will analyse in detail the meaning and significance of this demand in Ritschl's work. It will be shown that the systematic shape of theology was for Ritschl a wedge issue that permitted him to subject some individuals and traditions to a sharp critique while aligning himself with others. Among those singled out for criticism are Philipp Melanchthon and Friedrich Schleiermacher. Yet Schleiermacher, ironically, also emerges as perhaps the most important influence on Ritschl's concept of the theological system. The article will conclude with reflections on advantages and disadvantages of developing theology as a system in the tradition Ritschl represented and shaped

There are plenty of misconceptions about how the Luther Renaissance in Sweden relates to Albrecht Ritschl and nineteenth-century German Luther research. This article sheds new light on the importance of Ritschl's groundbreaking Luther interpretation to the first generation of the Swedish Luther Renaissance, as represented by its leading voices – Einar Billing and Nathan Söderblom. I demonstrate that there are substantial similarities between how Ritschl, Billing, and Söderblom approach and make use of Luther's thought. They all combine a careful analysis of Luther's theology with an interest in understanding his role in history. And despite their high regard of Luther as the great Protestant reformer, Ritschl, Billing, and Söderblom at times show a considerable distance to his thinking. It is also evident that they found solutions to contemporary questions and challenges in Luther's writings. Their constructive use of Luther is, I further argue, closely related to a positive reception of historical criticism and an ambition to make Lutheranism relevant to modern society. This to a large extent explains why Ritschl, Billing, and Söderblom have a freer attitude towards Luther than many of their Lutheran colleagues, and also why they emphasize those aspects of his theology that they consider especially fruitful for modern society
