How is the urban governance changing in response to the pandemic? The case of Milan
This article deals with the effects of COVID-19 on the urban governance of Milan. The author argues that, despite the changeable situation still ongoing, looking at the measures assumed in 2020, the Municipality of Milan took middle-term strategies and radical decisions for the design and the use of the city from a perspective of sustainable prosperity together with the pandemic management. According to the "Milano 2020" Adaptation Strategy, several policies were adopted in order to decongest public areas through the enlargement of spaces and services. In particular, during that period, the administration planned new policies in order to empower urban flexibility, rhythms and times, diversified mobility, public and green spaces, infrastructures, cooperation, and inclusion. In conclusion, the author argues that the pandemic has redefined the urban prosperity of Milan in relation to the sustainable transition and the new social challenges determined by the global scenario

Radicals formation in supersonic plasma jet
Title: Creation of radicals in electric discharge supersonic plasma jet Author: Milan MaSat Department: Department of Surface and Plasma Science Supervisor: Prof. RNDr. Milan Tichy, DrSc. Supervisor's e-mail address: [email protected] Abstract: Free radicals are the key intermediates and propagators of chemical reactions in Earth's atmosphere. Study of their structure and chemical properties is vital for understanding the processes in atmosphere. But their high reactivity brings the need for specific research methods. In-situ preparation and non-invasive detection and characterization techniques are needed. Most commonly used laboratory techniques such as photodissociation or electric discharge generate radicals at temperatures that are significantly higher then those under atmospheric conditions, which we intendto model. In this work, I was developing a source of cold radicals and experimental techniques for measuring their properties. 1 combined plasma source, which creates sufficient concentrations of radicals with supersonic expansion in which the translational and internal degrees of freedom are cooled deeply below the room temperature. For their characterization I used high-resolution spectroscopy utilizing near infrared laser diodes. I also developed and built electronic circuits and software..
Culture is reclaiming the creative city: The case of Macao in Milan, Italy
In May 5, 2012, a group of artists and cultural workers occupied a 33-storeys abandoned skyscraper in Milan, founding Macao or the "New Centre for Arts, Culture and Research". It was an event, with thousands of people joining in, newspapers headlines, and a massive flow of social media activity. Along with spaces, they claimed a new role for art and culture in society. Macao constitutes one of the last nodes of the national network of occupied theatres, which spread out in Italy from early 2011.This case is explored with the aim of understanding to what extent Macao, and more in general the global wave of art activism, constitutes an alternative to the neo-libel articulation of the creative city in Milan. On the one hand, we ask whether Macao is a political actor able to influence the local cultural policy and to what extent it is included in the urban governance of Milan. Related questions concern Macao claims and expectancies, and its possible process of normalization. On the other hand, we evaluate Macao's role into the cultural milieu at different levels (local, national, international). We will argue that Macao not only is an actor included in the urban governance, but also it provides the city a different cultural offer, open to bottom-up processes
Population aging and the labor market : the case of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's population is predicted to age vary fast during the next 50 years, bringing a slowdown of labor force growth and after 2030its contraction. Based on a 2006 representative survey of old people in Sri Lanka, the paper examines labor market consequences of this process, focusing on retirement pathways and the determinants of labor market withdrawal. The paper finds that a vast majority of Sri Lankan old workers are engaged in the informal sector, work long hours, and are paid less than younger workers. Moreover, the paper shows that labor market duality carries over to old age: (i) previous employment is the most important predictor of the retirement pathway; (ii) older workers fall into two categories: civil servants and formal private sector workers, who generally stop working before they reach 60 because they are forced to do so by mandatory retirement regulations, and casual workers and the self-employed, who work until very old age (or death) due to poverty and insufficient income and who stop working primarily because of poor health; and (iii) the option of part-time work is used primarily by workers who held regular jobs in their prime age employment, but not by casual workers and self-employed.Labor Markets,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Labor Policies,Work&Working Conditions,
Why do voters back corrupt and dishonest politicians? Interview with Milan Vaishnav
A candidate with criminal allegations hanging over them will repel voters – or will they? Not necessarily. In India, a third of the MPs elected in 2014 faced an ongoing criminal case. Milan Vaishnav, the author of a new book about the nexus of crime and democracy in India, talks to Ros Taylor about the appeal of a strongman who can ‘get things done’, even if it means breaking the law – and considers whether some US voters share the same instincts
