The piece "Activity of Dr. František Hofman in Media and Medial Practice" is a biographic study of František Hofman. It disserts briefly on his personal life and thereafter concentrates on his career in media. This text offers a compact view of Hofman's life to the reader although some of its components map less and the others more. The core of the bachelor diploma project is Hofman's activity in the press department of the Presidium of Council of Ministers. In the piece, this period of his life is described more contextually in respect to historic chains of events than the other periods. The context includes especially basic facts on political development in the area of current Czech Republic between years 1939 and 1941 and the presentation of the situation then in the area of legal press. Based on these facts, the piece the role and the position of František Hofman, while it discovers some personal and other relationships between him, other clerks in protectorate and journalists. The author familiarizes reader especially with the affairs which were related directly to the execution of the Hofman's function of the general editor of the press department and favorites the topic before the issues related to latter Hofman's arrest and the causes which lead to his imprisonment

Geographic profiling in Nazi Berlin: fact and fiction

    No full text
Geographic profiling uses the locations of connected crime sites to make inferences about the probable location of the offender’s ‘anchor point’ (usually a home, but sometimes a workplace). We show how the basic ideas of the method were used in a Gestapo investigation that formed the basis of a classic German novel about domestic resistance to the Nazis during the Second World War. We use modern techniques to re-analyse this case, and show that these successfully locate the Berlin home address of Otto and Elise Hampel, who had distributed hundreds of anti-Nazi postcards, after analysing just 34 of the 214 incidents that took place before their arrest. Our study provides the first empirical evidence to support the suggestion that analysis of minor terrorism-related acts such as graffiti and theft could be used to help locate terrorist bases before more serious incidents occur

New institutional assemblages for borderless customs control in the European Union

    No full text
This article is based on a use case proposing a Single Window implementation for borderless customs control in the European Union (EU). This EU e-Customs initiative proposes to combine trade facilitation from a customs perspective with secure trade based on supply chain risk analysis. To achieve this, government authorities would require access to the complete set of supply chain data, which is technically feasible as traders already have a lot of data available to meet customer requirements (Hofman 2011). Clearly, access to the full range of data of all actors in the trade chain, which also includes relevant member state authorities, improves transparency, accountability, and compliance with the rule of law. However, assuming that data are obtained directly from a trader or another government authority, security and privacy issues are a main concern. The new data-oriented approach to customs control of products (rather than the traditional process-driven control of cargo1) has implications for the relationship between authorities, traders, and technology providers, and consequently for the public values that are associated with service delivery. The e-Customs initiative is exemplary for the shift from new public management to digital-era governance (Dunleavy et al. 2006). We use actor-network theory (ANT) to explore how the transition to a paperless environment for customs and trade creates new institutional assemblages for customs control in the EU. As ANT treats different actors, such as humans, things (ICTs, data, governments, firms) and ideas (information, scientific theories, reputation) on equal terms, it is well adapte to study the role played by knowledge and technology in institutional change.Multi Actor SystemsTechnology, Policy and Managemen

    Proofs

Title: Proofs Author: Jakub Hofman Department: Department of Mathematics Education Supervisor: RNDr. Jakub Staněk, Ph.D., Department of Mathematics Edu- cation Abstract: This bachelor thesis should clarify the concept of a mathematical proof, briefly describe the individual proof methods and provide examples of proved theorems from various branches of mathematics. Another objective of this thesis is to provide a high school pupil with a study material which with it structure corresponds to mathematical textbooks and lecture notes provided by universities. In the first part of the thesis the basic terms of logic are introduced to the pupil. These are terms a pupil can usually encounter in math classes at school. The knowledge of these terms is essential for understanding the principles of the individual proof methods. The main part of the thesis is focused on explaining the individual proof methods and their application in proving mathematical theorems with di- fficulty appropriate to a pupil of secondary education. The theorems are ordered by the difficulty of their proof; they do not follow from one another nor do they form a coherent mathematical theory as that is not the goal of this thesis. The thesis also contains a list of theorems which a pupil should be ca- pable of proving after being acquainted with..

Spatiotemporal epidemiology in the identification of critical areas: an application to tuberculosis

    No full text
The increasing relevance of spatiotemporal epidemiology, enhanced by a greater availability of geographical information and the growing importance of knowing where, when and how the health phenomena occurred in a spatiotemporal context, promotes more scientifically robust and effective early intervention. The identification of critical areas, either in terms of their higher incidence of a disease, or their intensity of determinants, is crucial to assess them for priorities setting
