Gender Differences in Child Health-care Practices: Evidence from the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey, 1990-91
Among other factors, health care utilisation is important in determining the health status and survival chances of children. The patterns of childhood mortality, in general, indicate that deaths of male children have consistently exceeded those of females, with a much greater difference in the first month of birth (NNR). This has largely been attributed to differences in the genetic and biological factors between the sexes [Lopez and Ruzika (1983)]. The mortality level, thereafter, is influenced more by the socio-economic, environmental, and health care factors, indicating a mortality disadvantage for females in some populations. It has therefore been postulated that gender-based differences in health care practices partly explain the sex differentials in child mortality in some countries of South Asia, where healthseeking behaviour of parents discriminates against female children [Chen, et al. (1981); Das Gupta (1987); Sathar (1987); Ahmed (1990)]. Using data from Bangladesh, Chen, Haq, and D’Souza (1981) found that girls’ mortality risk was nearly 60 percent higher than that for boys after the neonatal period, and that girl children suffered more malnutrition and received lesser treatment for various infections. Das Gupta (1987) and Muhuri and Preston (1991) also explained the excess mortality of girls with a surviving elder sister in terms of conscious, selective neglect of the second daughter. Waldron (1983) in her extensive review of child mortality patterns in developing countries concluded that besides relative contributions of specific causes of death with different impact by sex, the variability in discrimination by gender, primarily in nutrition and health care utilisation, also contributes to excess female child mortality.
Transition in Primary and Secondary Schooling in Pakistan: Gender and Age Cohort Analysis
This study assesses the changing pattern of school attendance through age cohort analysis for both males and females in Pakistan. Based on the 1998 census data on educational attainment, the results indicate a profound rise in school attendance among younger age cohorts contributing to elimination of gender gap in primary-level schooling in urban areas only. The disadvantaged situation of rural females is reflected by a combination of low school entries/attendance to begin with, and high chance of discontinuing education before completing primary levels. The pattern of school transition reveals that among those few who have completed Class Five, the chances of staying through the secondary level are much higher—after which dropout accelerates rapidly. Two overall conclusions emerge from these results. First, the bulk of the deficit from universal primary education comes from females population, especially in rural areas. Second, the key to reducing dropouts and gender gap in school attendance lies in actions that raise the demand for schooling of girls, with equally matched availability of quality primary- and secondarylevel schools. It appears that achieving universal primary education by 2015, as mandated in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), remains a tall order for Pakistan.Primary Education, Secondary Education, Schooling, Pakistan
Aspects of the social geography of the province of Sistan/Baluchestan, Iran
The Kordi (Kurd) tribe now living in Iranian Baluchestan would appear to be an offshoot of the far more numerous Kurdish peoples of the north-western Zagros Mountains of Iran-Iraq. The Kordi were settled in their present location possibly in the l6th Century AD, but much more likely in the l8th Century, originally to act as tax-gatherers on behalf of the Shah-in-Shah. For many years they lived as pastoralists (often nomadic), tax gatherers, guardians of the frontier, and by raiding and plunder. Their habitat, round the Kuh-e-Taftan massif (one of the more fertile areas in the extremely arid and topographically difficult region of Baluchestan) allows some agriculture; and since the 1940's especially, the Kordi people have turned increasingly to a settled way of life based on mixed farming - mostly cultivation, with some animal herding. The thesis examines the origins of the Kordi, their geographical environment, social organisation and demography; and considers present and future evolution of this people in a changed and changing Iranian State

Electricity consumption in UiTM'S hostels, Shah Alam / Haslina Mahmood
One of the important needs in our daily lives is electricity supply. As essential as water, people need this supply to carry out their routine tasks. The supply of electricity service will fulfil the demands on those areas, yet to ensure it is enough to be used. The usage or consumption is not equal in all areas. It depends on the type of appliances used in the building as well as the number of the building occupants who consume this sort of service. Anyhow, people do not mean to use this supply appropriately. As the usage becomes un-equal according to the demand, it is shown that the demand could be increased or decreased, but the consumption of electricity is not necessity to be optimum as the supply. This showed the electricity demand parallels with the supply. As this is the everyday needs for every people, it is mean that electricity need to be controlled and maintained to ensure it is functioning all the time

Sound insulation for standard party wall of double-storey terrace houses in Shah Alam / Mohd Adnan Mahmood
A peaceful and comfortable life happens to be the dream of every house owner and occupant. Here, the term peace means there are no noise distractions whether it would be during the day or night. A house is built with the features of sound insulation in order to lessen the effects of sound absorption coming from the adjacent house into the building. This is turn will provide comfort to the occupants. The rate of sound insulation varies from house unit to house unit even if the houses are situated in the same housing area. Thus, this dissertation is written to determine the extent of truth in the above statement and also to make a comparison between the three residential areas nearby. Also, to study and make a conclusion as to how the differences can occur as well as to identify the main sources of noise that is affecting the residential areas. Sound Transmission Loss measured using Acoustics Instrument to find the Sound Transmission Class values and curve of the selected houses in Shah Alam; i.e. Section 7, 8 and 11. This curve of STC used to compare with the Standard curve. The rate of sound insulation varies from house to another even though they are situated in the same housing area. Between the three selected study areas, section 8 is very good in sound insulation which is having Sound Transmission Class (STC) value at 41, followed by Section 11 which is having STC value at 41 and Section 7 which is having STC value at 38
penerapan kemahiran alam sekitar. Kajian ini dijalankan melalui soal selidik dengan
