The bachelor thesis is divided into two parts. The first part introduces the translation of chosen chapters of the book La construction européenne by the French author Alain Herbeth. The translated parts deal with the history of the European integration from its beginnings to the year 1996 when the book was published. The second part comprises the translation commentary which consists of the analysis of the source text, the method of translation, the list of translation problems and their solutions, and the description of translation shifts. The aim of the thesis is to elaborate the functionally equivalent translation and to focus on the translation commentary

Domestication and Foreignisation in a Cognitively Estranged World: The Application of Venuti's Framework to Science Fictional Texts
Darko Suvin argues for an understanding of science fiction as the literature of ‘cognitive estrangement’. This paper will take Suvin’s notion as its starting point, examiningextracts from two works by author Alain Damasio to demonstrate how his languagecan be considered‘typical’ of the genre. Itwill then explorehow two key elements of Damasio’s language–neologisms and wordplays –have been translated, linkingthe strategies taken by the translators to Venuti’s paradigm. It willask the following key questions: to what extent have the translators foreignised or domesticated key elements of Damasio’s language? And is it possibleto either completely foreignise or domesticate features of science fiction if we want to maintain it as Suvin’s literature of ‘cognitive estrangement’
An investigation Into Lindsay Vickery\u27s Rendez-vous: An opera noir
A study of Rendez-vous: an Opera Nair, a contemporary chamber opera written by Australian-born composer Lindsay Vickery (b. 1965). The opera was based upon the novel Djinn by the French postmodernist author Alain Robbe-Grillet. Vickery composed the opera over a two-year period from 1993-1995. It was finally performed in 2001 after some revision. The novel contained a non-linear narrative and film genre references. The non-linear narrative structure was represented through a serial-like musical device. Musical influences were derived from classical music and film. Applied technology was utilised in the composition process and in the final production with the introduction of video sets and synchronization
