The 2D/3D dynamics of wall-bounded low-Rm magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence
With this experimental study, we give evidence that the dynamics of low-Rm MHD turbulence depends on the diffusion length l_z, which corresponds to the distance over which the Lorentz force is able to diffuse momentum before it is balanced by inertia

Investigation of an automated system for estimating people's density using infra-red thermal imaging
There is a need for on-line information regarding people's densities and numbers when organising mega events. This is to enable the decision makers to have the most precise and updated information in order to take the right decision regarding safety issues, services, organisation of people and traffic. Human-based monitoring system could include high percentage of human error due to personal perception, change of view angle and tiredness. Therefore, for on-line monitoring system there is a need for automation. This study investigates the use of low-resolution infrared technology combined with video images as a tool to estimate people's numbers and densities. The initial results found demonstrate that the suggested infrared techniques are very promising for automated monitoring system
Proton-unbound states in relevant for the reaction in novae
Background: The nucleosynthesis of several proton-rich nuclei is determined by radiative proton-capture reactions on unstable nuclei in nova explosions. One such reaction is , which links the NeNa and MgAl cycles in oxygen-neon (ONe) novae.
Purpose: To extract resonance strengths from a study of proton-unbound states in , produced via the Mg(He,) reaction.
Methods: A beam of ions at 50.7 MeV was used to produce the states of interest in Al. Proton-triton angular correlations were measured with a QDD magnetic spectrometer and a silicon detector array, located at iThemba LABS, South Africa.
Results: We measured the excitation energies of the four lowest proton-unbound states in Al and place lower-limits on values for these four states. Together with shell-model calculations of partial gamma widths, the experimental data are also used to determine resonance strengths for the three lowest resonances.
Conclusions: The energy of the dominant first resonance is determined to be keV, with a resonance strength meV.Accepted for Publication in Physical Review
Bond-orientational order in liquid aluminium-transition metal alloys
The structures of liquid AlMn and AlNi are simulated by molecular dynamics using interatomic potentials derived from neutron diffraction data. For these two alloys, the generated three dimensional particle configurations are consistent with the experimental partial pair correlation functions. The characterization of the local symmetries by both the construction of the Voronoï polyhedra and the calculation of the second-order invariants of spherical harmonics allows us to confirm the existence of a local icosahedral order in the quasicry stal -form i ng liquid AlMn and its absence in liquid AlNi about 70 K above the liquidus line. Molecular dynamics simulations of the corresponding supercooled liquids show that this order increases strongly for AlMn and starts to develop for AlNi. An improvement of the agreement between the experimental and calculated pair correlation functions by the reverse Monte Carlo method yields liquid configurations characterized by the same most frequently observed Voronoï polyhedra as those obtained in the molecular dynamics configurations, but with lower percentages

Smart restraint systems utlizing low cost infrared sensing
This paper describes the utilisation of embedded sensors for the development of intelligent mail processing machines. Low-cost Infrared imagers are used to monitor the health of machines. The machines are linked through the Internet, via standard protocols, to maintenance centres where the embedded intelligence is linked with remote surveillance and autonomous agents for predicting and requesting maintenance. The results described in this paper demonstrate that utilising embedded mechatronic systems with IT components leads to greater flexibility and higher machine intelligence for remote diagnostic system
