Development and Empirical Investigation of a Self-Powered UV Detector Based-Microcontroller

No full text
Titanium dioxide Nano particles have been used as a core material for the design of low-cost sustainable power source, the dye sensitized cell. In this work, dye sensitized cell was investigated to be used as a self-powered ultra violet light detector in a data acquisition system. To enhance the detector robustness, the device was sealed using cross-linked photo resist to isolate it from the environmental effects. The detector was tested in air as well as in water to proof its characteristics in various environmental conditions. High responsivity and fast response were achieved for both discrete and continuous ultraviolet (UV) illuminations. To prove the self-powered property of the sensor, it was interfaced to a microcontroller. Our experimental results confirmed that there is no need of intermediate electronics such as signal conditioning in the interfacing circuit. Furthermore, the detector observed obvious selectivity for different light colors. This characteristic makes it candidate for the development of color sensors.</jats:p

Reducing False Negatives in Ransomware Detection: A Critical Evaluation of Machine Learning Algorithms

Get PDF
Technological achievement and cybercriminal methodology are two parallel growing paths; protocols such as Tor and i2p (designed to offer confidentiality and anonymity) are being utilised to run ransomware companies operating under a Ransomware as a Service (RaaS) model. RaaS enables criminals with a limited technical ability to launch ransomware attacks. Several recent high-profile cases, such as the Colonial Pipeline attack and JBS Foods, involved forcing companies to pay enormous amounts of ransom money, indicating the difficulty for organisations of recovering from these attacks using traditional means, such as restoring backup systems. Hence, this is the benefit of intelligent early ransomware detection and eradication. This study offers a critical review of the literature on how we can use state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) models to detect ransomware. However, the results uncovered a tendency of previous works to report precision while overlooking the importance of other values in the confusion matrices, such as false negatives. Therefore, we also contribute a critical evaluation of ML models using a dataset of 730 malware and 735 benign samples to evaluate their suitability to mitigate ransomware at different stages of a detection system architecture and what that means in terms of cost. For example, the results have shown that an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model will be the most suitable as it achieves the highest precision of 98.65%, a Youden’s index of 0.94, and a net benefit of 76.27%, however, the Random Forest model (lower precision of 92.73%) offered the benefit of having the lowest false-negative rate (0.00%). The risk of a false negative in this type of system is comparable to the unpredictable but typically large cost of ransomware infection, in comparison with the more predictable cost of the resources needed to filter false positives

Is Mometasone Effective in Treating Otitis Media with Effusion?

No full text
Otitis media with effusion (OME) is the long-term deposition of mucus in the middle ear cleft. It is the leading cause of childhood hearing loss and a common childhood infection. It can impair communication and life quality. OME\u27s direct and indirect costs are also crucial. Improving OME care is crucial. This study examines intranasal mometasone\u27s efficacy in treating otitis media with effusion. A clinical trial study was conducted during a period from January 2021 to June 2022. It included 80 patients suffering from otitis media with effusion bilaterally (160 ears) who had an intact tympanic membrane and tympanometry type B. These patients were included only if they had a hearing change or loss noted by the parents or by the patient if he or she could complain for three months or more. These patients were split into two groups. Group A had 80 ears (40 patients) who got one puff of mometasone furoate nasal spray in each nostril every day for three months, and Group B had 80 ears (40 patients) who got one puff of seawater nasal spray in each nostril every day for the same period. On the first visit, otoscopic findings were recorded, and all patients had pure-tone audiometry and tympanometry performed. All of the above-mentioned measures were repeated and compared to the records from the first visit at the end of the three months of treatment. After treatment, 75% of ears in Group A changed from type B to type A tympanometry. This was significantly higher than in Group B, where only 15% of ears changed from type B to type A tympanometry. Regarding retraction, 75% of ears in Group A showed no retraction after treatment with mometasone furoate, while in Group B, it was 40%. The average pure-tone audiometry score in Group A improved after therapy. Corticosteroids are effective in the treatment of otitis media with effusion and safer when used as topical intranasal steroids than systemic preparations

Politics and Exhaustion — with Asad Haider

No full text
Theorist and author Asad Haider joins Below the Radar to discuss questions he explores in his book, Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump. Asad discusses how class dynamics cannot be separated from identity-driven movements. As well, he explores ideas of political exhaustion in the tradition of political theorists such as Sylvain Lazarus and Alain Badiou. In this interview, Asad interrogates the role of identity in politics and how it has been taken up in discourse — complicating the relationship between race and class in a context that has been defined by capital interests. Asad and Am discuss theoretical questions around frameworks for political organizing and solidarity across movements. He also speaks to our current moment as one of political exhaustion, where it\u27s difficult to mobilize transformative political change

Simple photolithography technique was used for patterning the photoresist using a mask and a UV LEDs. Thermal evaporator was utilized to deposit coper metal on the substrate. After liftoff, electrodes of 5 μm width and spacing of 3 μm were achieved. Deilecrophrisis technique was adopted to fetch the CNTs towards the fabricated electrode fingers. The fabricated CNT-FETs exhibit high electron mobility, around 10000 cm2/Vs. Current transfer characteristic observed that the device has p-type semiconductor properties, which can be attributed to the oxygen molecules absorption of CNTs oxygen from the testing environment
