Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

It was determined that the anxiety levels of the patients were positively predicted by the time they were diagnosed, while age and income status were negatively predicted (Adjusted R2=0.311, p<0.05). It was determined that the comfort levels of the patients, the period of diagnosis and education status were positive predictors, while the income status was a negative predictor (Adjusted R2=0.280, p<0.05). A moderate negative (r=-0.50) and significant (p<0.05) relationship was found between anxiety and comfort in the patients. As a result of the research, it was found that the patients had a moderate level of anxiety and comfort. As the anxiety level of the patients decreased, their comfort increased. It may be recommended to teach effective coping strategies for anxiety in this patient group

Breast milk is a natural food that is easily digestible and contains all the fluid, energy and nutrients required for optimum growth and development in the newborn. This study investigated the concentrations of maternal serum Isthmin-1 (ISM1) and breast milk (colostrum, intermediate milk and mature milk) in pregnant women with GDM and the usability of ISM1 in GDM screening. The study included 30 healthy mothers between the ages of 19-50 who had given birth and 30 mothers who had normal healthy births. A total of 240 samples were collected from the patients and the normal healthy group and studied with the ELISA method. Statistical analyses were performed in IBM SPSS Statistics 26 and JASP 0.19.3 version Computer software. Isthmin-1 measurements were made in the colostrum, foremilk, mature milk and blood of patients with gestational diabetes and normal non-gestational mothers and the milk and blood values of patients with GDM and non-GDM were compared. In colostrum, a more significant difference was observed in patients with GDM (X=446.93) compared to patients without GDM (X=206.45) (U[58]=875.5; p<0.001). Intermediate milk, a more significant difference was observed in patients with GDM (X=287.94) compared to patients without GDM (X=154.53) (U[58]=823; p<0.001). In mature milk, a more significant difference was observed in patients with GDM (X=246.00) compared to patients without GDM (X=160.33) (U[58]=686; p<0.001). In the blood serum, a very high level of significant difference was observed in patients with GDM (X=1483.43) compared to patients without GDM (X=494.70) (U[58]=900; p<0.001). As a result; ISM1 levels in colostrum, intermediate milk, mature milk and blood serum of mothers with GDM were determined to be significantly higher than in breast milk and blood serum of mothers without GDM. ISM1 may be involved in the pathophysiology of GDM or may serve as a biomarker for early detection

Lisansüstü Eğitim Enstitüsü, Disiplinlerarası Biyomedikal Mühendisliği Ana Bilim DalıMaresin-1'in inflamasyon çözünürlüğünü arttırdığı ve enflamatuar yanıtı inhibe edip koruyucu özellikler gösterdiği belirlenmiştir. It has been determined that Maresin-1 increases inflammation resolution and inhibits inflammatory response and exhibits protective properties. In this study, the protective effects of colostrum were evaluated by examining Maresin-1 levels in colostrum, intermediate milk and mature milk. Healthy women aged 19-50 years and women diagnosed with GDM who had given birth were included in the study. 30 mothers diagnosed with GDM and 30 healthy mothers who had given birth who applied to the obstetrics clinic participated in the study. A total of 240 samples were collected from the patients and the healthy group. Colostrum, intermediate milk and mature milk will be milked from each mother, and the blood and milk will be stored at -20 until they are studied, and Maresin-1 peptides to be studied in both milk and serum were studied by ELISA method as specified in the catalogue of the manufacturer. All statistical analyses were performed with computer package (SSPS-22) programs. According to the study, the values of Colostrum, intermediate milk and blood in breast milk increased in the milk of GDM mothers, and a significant difference was obtained in the blood compared to other groups. When the Colostrum, intermediate milk and mature milk of other normal mothers were compared with the blood values, the increase rate increased in the same order. No significant difference was observed in the comparisons between the normal and GDM groups
