It is believed that without the evaluation it would be almost impossible to teach. As students need to know their abilities, teachers use some kind of evaluations. Evaluation of teaching learning process can be administrated in the form of tests. In other words teaching must be followed by testing. The information gained can be useful for both students and teacher. Hence there are two points interrelated. Firstly, the test is concerned with the teaching that has taken place. It is that the test administered should give the students feeling that the teacher’s evaluation matches what they have taught and sense of accomplishment. Secondly, the teaching is concerned with the test. The teacher can diagnose his effort in his teaching whether or not his teaching has been effective. Madsen (1987) pointed out that the criteria of a good test comprise: (1) validity, (2) reliability, (3) difficulty level, and (4) discrimination power. This research was to know and describe quality of semester II English test for the students of The State Polytechnic of Lampung (Polinela) in the year 2006. The study showed that the Semester II English Test administered for the students did not meet the expected level of validity, reliability, level of difficulty nor discrimination power of a good test. Key words: evaluation, validity, reliability, difficulty level, discrimination power

Abstract:  Complimenting as a speech event has been one of the major areas on which linguists have focused their attention and drawn insights into the phenomenon of linguistic politeness in the last two decades (Zanrong 2004).  Some previous research – among others are by Davis (2008); Heidari (2009); Matsuoka (2009) – revealed that gender give rise variations of strategies on compliment responses (CR). This paper examines Sundanese women responses to compliments on appearance addressed by the same and different gender.  The research applied Naturalized Role Play method in collecting the data by observing the way of 68 women giving response to the compliment addressed on their physical appearance. The respondents were native Sundanese women living around Bandung.  The study found that most women respond differently to compliments addressed to them by women and by men.  This study also reveals that most of them considered the compliments – particularly when addressed by men – as a way of either maintaining social hospitalities or joking, and thus, the speech acts of compliments appear more to be a way of consolidating solidarity among them. Keywords: politeness, compliments, patterns of respons

This thesis is to report on teachers’ ability in composing expository texts. The texts were composed by six high school teachers in Bandar Lampung, Lampung, Indonesia. This study is a descriptive qualitative case study investigating three Analytical and three Hortatory Expository texts. Those texts were analyzed using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to deal with the textual, experiential and interpersonal metafunctions which were exposed within the texts’ Theme, Transitivity and Mood systems. The results of texts analyses then were confirmed and validated through interviews conducted with the teachers. The result of this study shows that the teachers could demonstrate appropriate strategies to compose the texts although some problems of writing were evident in the texts. The grammatical analyses indicate that the writers had successfully attempted to use some of the main conventions of written argumentative discourse. In this case, to construe textual metafunction, the teachers could employ the demands of the generic form of arguing genre, the linguistic devices as well as the thematic progression. Furthermore, referring to experiential metafunction, the teachers could demonstrate their ability to use various linguistic resources such as appropriate conjunction system and appropriate Process types, Circumstantials and Nominalisations. Finally, interpersonally, the writers could enrich the text with the use of appropriate Modality to create objective arguments and communicate with the readers. However, the study reveals that not all of the teachers’ texts can be considered successful or mature texts in that they seem to have problems with Argument development characterized with lack of fact and objective evidence, inconsistency of argument, and absence of intertextuality. Besides, the inappropriate use of imperative mood, realis/universal statements and some syntax errors are also found. It is found that the teachers’ problems were mainly to do with their time management to carry out the task which resulted in their inability to give maximum efforts to work with the texts. In addition their background knowledge and language competence as well as their commitment to carry out the task also appeared to be problems in producing the texts. Thus, the teachers are suggested to commit to more practices and to have effective teacher trainings to maintain and improve the teachers’ professional competence particularly to concern the issue of SFL and GBA within the curriculum

The principle of sustainable tourism development is derived from variousattractions management concepts, which is applied among others in ecotourism and tourismvillages. The tourism village is developed by exploring the potential that exists in thevillage, both natural potential, customs of the surrounding community, cultural uniqueness, and patterns of life that occur in daily life. The tourism village directly involves theparticipation of the local community as a party that is in direct contact withtourists, so that itbecomes a special concern to determine the management model by making the community asubject, not just an object. One of the tourism villages that has been active in LampungProvince is in Tanggamus Regency, namely Sailing tourism village as a weaving industrycenter of Lampung. The village offers the attractiveness ofthe process of making Lampungtapis woven cloth to the sales process. In addition, thereare also agro-tourism locations withfruit gardens as objects and waterfalls, as well as springs managed by the community. Theexistence of the Sailing tourism village, which is positioned in the middle of communitysettlements and even formed with collaboration between communities, becomes a specialdemand that the management of this area should be designed with the participation of thecommunity as tourism actors, one of which is through the concept of developing communitybased tourism (CBT) in 3 participations, namely ideas, material, and real action. Thecommunity based tourism model designed from the findings in the Sailing tourism villagehas 4 stages, namely identifying potential that can be developed into attractiveness, raisingawareness to the public as subjects and tourist objects, developing a managementorganization with the formation of organizational structures and governance documents, andimplementing tourism programs and businesses

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
