Letter from Frank Chin to Dale [Minami], December 7, 1997
A letter from Frank Chin to Dale [Minami] thanking him for sending a VHS clip for "Michi Day." Chin devotes the bulk of the letter to a proposal for creating a bell, that would be made of pieces of metal from incarceration camps, to celebrate Japanese American redress. These materials are from box 73 and 74 of the Frank Chin Papers. The Frank Chin Papers contain personal and professional correspondence between Frank Chin and Michi Weglyn relating to particular projects on which either author was working as well as files related to the Day of Remembrance Tribute to Michi Weglyn

authorThis article presents the midterm results of hybrid total hip arthroplasty for patients with hip dysplasia by use of a tight fit technique for the femoral component. We followed up 113 hips in 99 patients for a mean of 11 years. All final femoral rasps used in this study overrasped by 0.5 to 1.0 mm for stem insertion, resulting in relatively thin cement mantles. Both components of one hip were removed because of infection. The other 5 acetabular components were revised for osteolysis, recurrent dislocation, or dislodgement of the polyethylene liner. No femoral component was revised for aseptic loosening. We conclude that the tight fit technique using a canal-filling stem may produce good long-term results for patients with hip dysplasia
Arthroscopically Assisted Reattachment of Avulsed Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex to the Fovea of the Ulnar Head
Triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) insertion into the fovea of the distal ulna plays a crucial role in stabilizing the distal radioulnar joint. Consequently, surgical reattachment against avulsion of the foveal TFCC insertion is required to stabilize the distal radioulnar joint. However, because of technical difficulties, no arthroscopic procedure for such a lesion has currently been established. We present a new technique for arthroscopic reattachment of the avulsed TFCC into the fovea. An osseous tunnel 2.9 mm in diameter is created from the ulnar neck to the foveal surface. Under arthroscopic guidance, a nonabsorbable suture passed into a 21 gauge needle is placed into the TFCC through the osseous tunnel. The avulsed portion of the TFCC is anchored to the fovea by means of a repair suture passed through the TFCC. To achieve normal tension of the TFCC, the suture is tied onto the periosteum around the proximal entrance of the osseous tunnel. Our arthroscopic technique is relatively simple and has significant advantages for progressive healing at the attachment site between the TFCC and the fovea

An ecological momentary assessment analysis of relations among coping, affect, and smoking lapse:
This study used EMA data from smokers engaged in an earnest attempt to quit smoking to assess complex relations among coping, affect, and smoking. Analyses tested hypotheses about the main effects of coping and both mediators and moderators of coping effects on subsequent outcomes of interest (i.e., affect, coping effort, coping efficacy, and smoking behavior). Results of multilevel models indicated that coping does not improve negative affect within 4 hours of coping efforts, but that coping does improve positive affect and increase the odds of engaging in temptation coping in the short-term. Lapses were more likely to happen when recent coping was reported within 48 hours. None of the putative mediators of coping were predictive of later lapse risk as anticipated. Analyses also revealed that pre-quit coping practice moderated the effects of post-quit coping to deal with stressful events on later affect. Moreover, significant moderating gender effects were also found in these relations.M.S.Includes bibliographical references (p. 53-66)by Haruka Minam
