Gender and Public Spending on Education in Pakistan: A Case Study of Disaggregated Benefit Incidence

It is generally believed that education is one of the basic rights of every human being, irrespective of sex, age, creed, religion, etc. Moreover, the target of universal primary education cannot be achieved without female access to educational opportunities, which contains several external benefits. In addition, access to educational opportunities assumes prime importance for empowerment of women. However, inequalities in access to education between males and females can be found in many countries across the world including Pakistan. According to conventional wisdom, a combination of cultural, social, and economic factors are responsible for placing young girls and women at a serious disadvantage vis-a-vis access to school and the prospect of completing their education. This disadvantage can be altered through public policies including gender sensitive public spending on education. The above assertion about the role of public policy is based on the theory of public finance1, which demonstrates that public expenditure on education can affect the population in a number of ways, which has significant gender dimensions. For example, government spending on primary education is likely to generate more income for women than spending on universities, for the simple reason that there are relatively more women primary school teachers than women university lecturers. Moreover, these expenditures provide subsidized educational services, which is a form of “in kind transfers”. These “in-kind transfers” improve the current well-being of the recipients, and enhance their longer-run income-earning potential. They can be considered as both current and capital transfers to the recipients, and therefore can be termed as the “benefit incidence” of public spending. The main concern of this paper is to assess the gender dimension of the benefitincidence”. The tudy has two basic objectives. First and foremost, it aims to investigate which income group actually benefits from the government’s subsidized.

Abstract: It is evident that the evolution of digital technology has created an apparent and drastic shift in the way the music industry operates. Social media as an important tool in music digitalisation is also bringing further transformation to the way artistes, producers and other music industry stakeholders conduct their business. Adopting the qualitative research method with digital ethnography and consultation of relevant literatures, this study examines the Nigerian music industry and the popular music scene through the current Afrobeats sub-genre against the backdrop of social media deployment. The paper argues that the social media has contributed positively towards the popularity of Afrobeats and the Nigerian music industry, and through social media new trends and novel way of music production, promotions and dissemination is being witnessed in the Nigerian popular music scene. Keywords: Popular Music, Social Media, Digitalization, Music Industry, Afrobeats, Nigeria. Globally Oriented Citizenship and International Voluntary Service

    No full text
This Discussion Paper explores Nigeria’s human development aid to Africa, Caribbean and Pacific countries under its international volunteer programme called the Technical Aid Corps (TAC). It critically examines the relationship between participation in international civic service and civic nationalism. Using a combination of empirical and analytical methods, the author is able to provide insights into the impact of two decades of Nigeria’s aid diplomacy within the context of South-South solidarity and into the inculcation of values linked to globally oriented citizenship in TAC volunteers. The findings of this study are of value to those interested in emerging African development cooperation in the global South and the expanding notions of citizenship beyond borders. Scholars, development actors and policymakers will find this study refreshingly different and highly informative

A Basic Study of the Sewing of Knitted Cotton Cloth

The purpose of the present study is to discuss the practical seaming conditions when making clothings of knitted cotton cloth. The experimental conditions were as follows: the author used four seaming directions such as wale (crossing), course (horizontal), bias (diagonal), and a combination of wale and bias; a combination of two Kinds of threads; a combination of three kinds of thread elasticity; three kinds of seawing machine needles; three kinds of seams; five repetitions of testing; and two hundred and seventy trials per direction. The author measured the tearing strength and elongation on the seamed. Parts according to the JIS Standards by using an elongation tester. The values of seaming effects* and at-test were calculated by variance analysis on the basis of the strength of original cloth. The results show that the numder of seams had a significant effect on seaming in each direction. And few tearings were found under such a condition as five seams/cm in which the threads of cotton and nylon were used, while any thread elasticity did not necessarily have a significant effect on seamig. Such a combination of different seaming directions as wale and bias had an effect of less than seventy percent on seaming. *Seamig effects (%) = (Strength of the seaming of testing cloth / Strength of original cloth )×100departmental bulletin pape

LES and CDNS Investigation of T106C Low Pressure Turbine

    No full text
This paper investigates the aerodynamic performance of a low pressure turbine, namely the T106C, by large eddy simulation (LES) and coarse grid direct numerical simulation (CDNS) at a Reynolds number of 100,000. The existing experimental data is used to validate the results. The effects of sub-grid scale (SGS) models, mesh densities, computational domains and boundary conditions on the result are studied. A separation zone appears downstream 60% S/S-0, which is difficult to be predicted precisely. Two SGS models, i.e. Smagorinsky and WALE model are implemented. WALE model produces a better result than Smagorinsky model when the mesh is coarse. For the fine mesh, the difference due to the SGS models becomes smaller. It is surprising to find that CDNS produces very similar results to WALE model, and their results are in better agreement with the experiment than that of Smagorinsky model. The computational domain is also important for the prediction of the flow near the midspan. 3D features of the separated flow have an effect on the downstream flows, especially for the area near the reattachment. Sufficient long spanwise computational domain is important for an accurate prediction. The current study also find that the endwall secondary flow has an effect on the flow separation near the middle span, which was seldom discussed before. By considering the effects of endwall secondary flows, better prediction of the flow separation near the blade midspan can be achieved. The effect of the endwall secondary flow on the blade suction side separation is also explained with the analytical method based on the Biot-Savart Law.CPCI-S(ISTP)[email protected]

The ability of the attaching and effacing pathogens enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) and Citrobacter rodentium to overcome colonisation resistance is reliant on a type 3 secretion system used to intimately attach to the colonic epithelium. This crucial virulence factor is encoded on a pathogenicity island known as the Locus of Enterocyte Effacement (LEE) but its expression is regulated by several core-genome encoded transcription factors. Here, we unveil that the core transcription factor PdhR, traditionally known as a regulator of central metabolism in response to cellular pyruvate levels, is a key activator of the LEE. Through genetic and molecular analyses, we demonstrate that PdhR directly binds to a specific motif within the LEE master regulatory region, thus activating type 3 secretion directly and enhancing host cell adhesion. Deletion of pdhR in EHEC significantly impacted the transcription of hundreds of genes, with pathogenesis and protein secretion emerging as the most affected functional categories. Furthermore, in vivo studies using C. rodentium, a murine model for EHEC infection, revealed that PdhR is essential for effective host colonization and maximal LEE expression within the host. Our findings provide new insights into the complex regulatory networks governing bacterial pathogenesis. This research highlights the intricate relationship between virulence and metabolic processes in attaching and effacing pathogens, demonstrating how core transcriptional regulators can be co-opted to control virulence factor expression in tandem with the cell’s essential metabolic circuitry
