It is a handwritten copy of an original poem composed by Abu Abdurahmān Muhammad bun Abdullahi bun Mālik. It was completed on the 6 of the Islamic month of Muharram 1201 (Hijri) / October 29, 1786. The name of the script is unknown. According to the custodian, he is either Al Hajj Umar Taal or one of his followers. The text is a praise of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It portrays the characters that make Prophet Muhammad stand high as a Prophet. It describes his unequaled qualities, high morality, unique epithets, the blessed places he had been to, and his virtues that are the best of humankind.     Phytochemical Profile and Antibacterial Activity of Nigella Sativa against Biofilm-producing Bacteria Uropathogens

    This study explores the antibacterial effects of Nigella sativa seeds on bacteria obtained from clinical samples. The aim was to assess the antibacterial properties of both aqueous and methanolic extracts of Nigella sativa seeds against E. coli, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa. The three samples were collected from the Microbiology Laboratory of Modibbo Adamawa Medical Centre and were reconfirmed using culture, microscopy, and some biochemical tests. The seed samples of N. sativa were procured from herbal point Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria. The phytochemical assay of the extracts revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, phenols, cardiac glycosides, steroids, saponins, and terpenoids in both extracts. The highest antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa was demonstrated by the aqueous extract of N. sativa seeds, with inhibition zone diameters of 19.30 ±0.61 mm, 8.10 ±2.17 mm, and 12.00 ±0.29 mm, respectively. However, the methanol extract exhibited slightly greater activity against E. coli and P. aeruginosa, with inhibition zone diameters of 12.10 ±0.38 mm and 13.80 ±0.40 mm, respectively. Both methanol and aqueous extracts showed minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 25 mg/mL against S. aureus and E. coli. Similarly, for P. aeruginosa, the MIC was 25 mg/mL for methanol extract and 50 mg/mL for aqueous extract. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) for both extracts against S. aureus and E. coli was determined to be 25 mg/mL. However, for P. aeruginosa, the MBC was 25 mg/mL for the aqueous extract and 50 mg/mL for the methanol extract. The study indicates that N. sativa seed extract possesses antibacterial properties against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, underscoring its potential as an effective medicinal antibacterial agent

    A persuasive educational technology-based tool for motivating junior secondary school female students in Nigeria to enrol in STEM

    Text in EnglishBackground: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields have made significant contributions to our modern world's advancements. However, the number of women in STEM professions in Nigeria is overwhelmingly low. Concerns have been raised about the growing demand for STEM skills and the shortage of human resources to meet this demand. There is advocacy to encourage female students to pursue STEM disciplines to meet the demand for STEM skills. Despite this, no research has been conducted in Nigeria to increase female students' enrolment in STEM using the attitude and behaviour change approach, also known as the persuasion approach. This is despite the strong support for research that focuses on the affective aspect of STEM learning, which deals with students’ values, and believes to encourage female students' enrolment in STEM pathways. Aim: The main aim of this thesis is to develop a framework that guides the design of persuasive educational technologies (PET) based on the persuasion approach to motivate junior secondary school female students in Nigeria to enrol in STEM classes. Setting: The participants were drawn from three different secondary schools in Nigeria's Kano State. The research delved into the natural environment of the participants to ensure that contextually rich information was gathered from them to inform the study. Method: Data was collected from the research participants through interviews and a focus group session and analysed using a qualitative research approach. Following data analysis, the Design Science Research (DSR) strategy was used to guide the framework design. The DSR strategy's rigorous iteration phases ensured that the framework was redefined several times until a rigorous artefact was produced. Results: According to the study’s findings, certain external factors (school factors, family factors, and cultural factors) influence female students' attitudes toward STEM professions, and it is their attitude towards STEM professions that guides their decision to pursue a STEM pathway. A motivational push from a PET can encourage female students to pursue STEM careers. Conclusion: A PET tool developed following the PET4STEM framework has the potential to change female students' attitudes toward STEM professions and consequently their decision to pursue STEM careers in the future. The theoretical contribution of the study is the creation of a new PET4STEM framework that provides information on key components of a PET tool to promote STEM enrolment among Nigerian junior secondary school female students. Second, it establishes, empirically, the factors that influence female students' enrolment in STEM classes. Finally, it proposes convincing strategies for combating female students' negative perceptions of STEM subjects.     Investigation on the Corrosion Inhibition of Eucalyptus Camaldulensis Bark Extract on Mild Steel in Nitric Acid Medium

    Abstract: The inhibitory effects of Eucalyptus camaldulensis bark extract on the corrosion of mild steel in a nitric acid medium were investigated through weight loss measurement. Eucalyptus camaldulensis, commonly referred to as the river red gum, is a flowering plant species of the Myrtaceae family. The research found that the bark extract had the highest efficiency at a concentration of 0.8g/l and a temperature of 303K, with a 59.34% inhibition rate. The study also showed that the inhibition rate increased with higher concentrations of the inhibitor but decreased with higher temperatures, suggesting that physical adsorption mechanisms were involved.     Phytochemical, Antioxidant, and Antibacterial Activities of Stem Bark Fractions of Eucalyptus globulus Against Multidrug-Resistant Bacterial Isolates

    The growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has intensified the need for alternative therapeutic agents, with medicinal plants offering promising solutions due to their bioactive compounds. This study investigated the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of Eucalyptus globulus bark extracts against multidrug-resistant bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus). Plant samples were collected from Adamawa State Polytechnic, Nigeria, authenticated (voucher ASP-765), and subjected to reflux extraction using hexane and water. Phytochemical analysis revealed alkaloids, phenols, tannins, glycosides, and terpenoids in both methanol and aqueous extracts, while flavonoids and steroids were absent in aqueous extracts, and methanol extracts lacked saponins. Antibacterial activity was assessed through agar well diffusion and broth dilution assays, demonstrating a concentration-dependent effect. Methanol extracts showed greater efficacy against E. coli and P. aeruginosa (12.8–13.8 mm inhibition zones), while aqueous extracts were most effective against S. aureus (19.3 mm at 100 mg/mL). Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values ranged from 25 to 50 mg/mL, with E. coli exhibiting the lowest MIC (25 mg/mL), highlighting the extract’s antimicrobial potential. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using phosphomolybdate and ferricyanide assays. The methanol extract exhibited strong free radical scavenging activity, with a total antioxidant capacity (TAC) expressed in ascorbic acid equivalents (AAE), although lower than pure ascorbic acid. Statistical validation (one-way ANOVA, p < 0.05) confirmed the significance of the results. These findings support the traditional medicinal use of E. globulus and its potential for combating antibiotic-resistant infections and oxidative stress-related conditions. Further studies are recommended to isolate bioactive compounds, determine mechanisms of action, and develop optimized therapeutic formulations for AMR management

    Gender, Age and Subjective Well-Being: Towards Personalized Persuasive Health Interventions

    (1) Background: Subjective well-being (SWB) is an individual&rsquo;s judgment about their overall well-being. Research has shown that high subjective well-being contributes to overall health. SWB consists of both Affective and Cognitive dimensions. Existing studies on SWB are limited in two major ways: first, they focused mainly on the Affective dimension. Second, most existing studies are focused on individuals from the Western and Asian nations; (2) Methods: To resolve these weaknesses and contribute to research on personalizing persuasive health interventions to promote SWB, we conducted a large-scale study of 732 participants from Nigeria to investigate what factors affect their SWB using both the Affective and Cognitive dimensions and how distinct SWB components relates to different gender and age group. We employed the Structural Equation Model (SEM) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to develop models showing how gender and age relate to the distinct components of SWB; (3) Results: Our study reveals significant differences between gender and age groups. Males are more associated with social well-being and satisfaction with life components while females are more associated with emotional well-being. As regards age, younger adults (under 24) are more associated with social well-being and happiness while older adults (over 65) are more associated with psychological well-being, emotional well-being, and satisfaction with life. (4) Conclusions: The results could inform designers of the appropriate SWB components to target when personalizing persuasive health interventions to promote overall well-being for people belonging to various gender and age groups. We offer design guidelines for tailoring persuasive intervention to increase SWB based on an individual&rsquo;s age and gender group. Finally, we map SWB components to possible persuasive technology design strategies that can be employed to implement them in persuasive interventions design

    The Influence of Age, Gender, and Cognitive Ability on the Susceptibility to Persuasive Strategies

    The fact that individuals may react differently toward persuasive strategies gave birth to a shift in persuasive technology (PT) design from the one-size-fits-all traditional approach to the individualized approach which conforms to individuals&rsquo; preferences. Given that learners&rsquo; gender, age, and cognitive level can affect their response to different learning instructions, it is given primacy of place in persuasive educational technology (PET) design. However, the effect of gender, age, and cognitive ability on learners&rsquo; susceptibility to persuasive strategies did not receive the right attention in the extant literature. To close this gap, we carried out an empirical study among 461 participants to investigate whether learners&rsquo; gender, age, and cognitive ability significantly affect learners&rsquo; susceptibility to three key persuasive strategies (social learning, reward, and trustworthiness) in PETs. The results of a repeated measure analysis of variance (RM-ANOVA) revealed that people with high cognitive level are more likely to be susceptible to social learning, while people with low cognitive level are more likely to be susceptible to trustworthiness. Comparatively, our results revealed that males are more likely to be susceptible to social learning, while females are more likely to be susceptible to reward and trustworthiness. Furthermore, our results revealed that younger adults are more likely to be susceptible to social learning and reward, while older adults are more likely to be susceptible to trustworthiness. Our findings reveal potential persuasive strategies which designers can employ to personalize PTs to individual users in higher learning based on their susceptibility profile determined by age, gender, and cognitive level

    I'jaz al Qur'an: A Literary and Historical Analysis of the Inimitability of the Qur'an

    abstract: The term I'jaz al Qur'an refers to the inimitable quality of the Qur'an. The doctrine of inimitability comes directly from the Qur'anic text itself: And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful (The Qur'an Al-Baqarah 2:23). This verse is one of the verses of tahaddi (challenge) that challenges mankind to imitate just one chapter of the Qur'an. The doctrine of inimitability comes directly from this verse and four others throughout the Qur'an. It took about two centuries after the revelation of the Qur'an for the topic i'jaz to become the subject of mass scholarly activity. Reasons for the sudden increase in scholarly activity surrounding i'jaz include such historical events as the emergence of Sufism, the mu'tazalah school of theology, the shu'ubiyyah movement, and the Muslim-Christian interactions during the ninth century. Scholarly activity on has produced several theories on i'jaz from the likes of classical Islamic scholars including Abu Ishaq al-Nazaam, Al-Qadi Abd Al-Jabbar, Abu Bakr Abd al-Qahir bin Abd ar-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Jurjani, Abu Bakr Muammad ibn al-Tayyib al-Baqillani, and Muhammad ibn Juzayy al-Kalbi. These theories of i'jaz, while sharing many similarities, were chosen for this analysis due to the key differences they exhibit. These differences are often associated with the theological school and area of expertise of the given scholar, all of which will be explored thoroughly
