Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Tuotannon läpimenoajan lyhentäminen : esimerkkinä Edux-Ovet Oy 2008
Opinnäytetyön aiheena on tuotannon läpimenoajan lyhentäminen. Esimerkkiyrityksenä työssä on nivalalainen, rakennuspuusepänteollisuuden toimialalla ovituotantoa harjoittava Edux-ovet Oy. Työssä käsitellään ovitehtaan tuotantoprosessin alkuvaiheita valmiista työmääräimestä oviaihion pintakäsittelyyn.
Työn tavoitteena on aikaansaada käytännön läheinen ja helposti toteutettava, toimiva tuotantoprosessi ovitehtaaseen. Tavoitteena on myös pienellä kehitystyöllä parantaa tehtaan tuotantokapasiteettiä jo olemassa olevien resurssien avulla.
Työn toteutus aloitetaan tehtaan nykytilan kuvauksella, joka toteutetaan alkutuotannon työvaiheet läpikäyden. Tämän perusteella laaditaan parannusehdotuksia työvaihekohtaisiin toiminta- ja työmalleihin sekä tuotannonohjausperiaatteisiin. Laadituissa parannusehdotuksissa kiinnitetään huomiota myös sujuvan kokonaisuuden aikaan saamiseksi koko alkutuotannon osalta.
Työn tuloksena syntyy toimiva ja joustava valmistusjärjestelmä ovituotantoon. Tehtaan keskeneräisen työn ja tuottamattoman työn määrät vähenevät ja sen tuloksena läpimeno-aika lyhenee. The purpose of this diploma work is to create a practical and feasible manufacturing process for door industry. In additional the target is to improve the production capacity with already existing resources.
First, the factory's present state is reported and the early stages of production in the factory are presented. On the basis of this information suggestions are made for improving all production stages and also production management models. In the suggested improvements attention is paid also to general functionality in the whole primary production.

Hevosen kuivikelannan hyödyntämispotentiaali energiantuotannossa Varsinais-Suomen alueella
Tässä opinnäytetyössä raportoidaan Turun ammattikorkeakoulun HEPO – Hevosenlanta polttoon -hankkeen tuloksia. Suoritin haastattelut hevostalleille ja polttolaitoksille tammi-helmikuun aikana vuonna 2020. HEPO-hankkeessa selvitettiin hevosen kuivikelannan hyödyntämispotentiaalia energiantuotannossa Varsinais-Suomessa. Selvityksessä tavoitettiin 76 Varsinais-Suomen alueella toimivaa hevostallia, joiden vastauksiin ja haastatteluihin tulokset tallien osalta perustuvat. Kuivikelannan potentiaalisina energiahyödyntäjinä tavoitettiin 11 polttolaitosta alueen yhteensä 14 laitoksesta. Kolme polttolaitosta oli alustavasti kiinnostunut käyttämään hevosen kuivikelantaa polttoaineena ja yksi tavoitettu polttolaitos oli polttanut kuivikelantaa jo vuodesta 2016.
Suosituin tallien käyttämä kuivike oli turve, jota pidettiin usein ominaisuuksiltaan parhaana ja kustannustehokkaana. Turpeen suurta suosiota kuivikkeena voidaan kuitenkin pitää epäedullisena tuloksena energiahyödyntämisen kannalta, koska polttolaitokset eivät ole halukkaita käyttämään sitä polttoaineena. Tallien yleisimmin käyttämää turvekuiviketta ei lasketa biopolttoaineeksi eikä se muun muassa sen vuoksi kiinnosta biopolttoaineita käyttäviä polttolaitoksia. Turvekuivitettu lanta sisältää myös enemmän klooria ja alkaleja kuin puukuivitettu lanta. Kloori ja alkalit voivat vahingoittaa kattilatekniikkaa. Kaikki polttolaitokset, jotka olivat alustavasti kiinnostuneita käyttämään hevosen kuivikelantaa polttoaineena, mainitsivat ainoastaan puukuivitetun hevosenlannan kelpaavan heille.
Myös puukuivitetun lannan käyttäminen polttoaineena vaatisi isoja ja kalliita lisäinvestointeja polttolaitoksilta kattilatekniikkaan, polttoaineen käsittely ja -kuljetuslaitteistoihin suhteellisen marginaalisen polttoaine määrän hyödyntämiseksi. Tämä selittää polttolaitosten laimean yleisen kiinnostuksen käyttää hevosen kuivikelantaa polttoaineena.
Selvityksen mukaan lannan sijoittaminen ei ollut merkittävä ongelma Varsinais-Suomessa. Suurin osa Varsinais-Suomen hevostallien lannasta päätyy lannoitteeksi joko omille tai viljelijöiden pelloille sekä mullan ja lannoitteiden tuottajille, jota voidaan pitää ravinteiden kierron kannalta parhaana vaihtoehtona.
Tällä hetkellä Varsinais-Suomen alueella syntyy noin 4000 m³ puupohjaista kuivikelantaa vuodessa, josta saataisiin esimerkiksi noin 2300 megawattituntia kaukolämpöä. Tämä vastaa noin sadan keskikokoisen omakotitalon vuosittaista lämmitystarvetta. Turvepohjaisen kuivikelannan potentiaali alueella on huomattavasti suurempi noin 15 000 m³ vuodessa. Jos turvetta kuivikkeena käyttävät tallit siirtyisivät käyttämään puupohjaista kuiviketta, lannan energian hyödyntämispotentiaali kasvaisi huomattavasti.This Bachelor’s thesis is based on the results of the project “HEPO – Horse manure burning” run by Turku University of Applied Sciences. I made interviews for horse stables and combustion plants during the January-February in 2020. During the project, the recovery potential of horse manure was investigated. 76 horse stables operating in South-West Finland were approached. As potential users of horse manure in energy production, 11 combustion plants from a total of 14 plants in the area were reached. Three facilities were tentatively interested in horse manure as a fuel and one facility has been burning horse manure since 2016.
The most common type of bedding used by stables was peat, which was often considered the best and the most cost-efficient option compared to other types of bedding. The popularity of peat can be considered an unfavorable result as combustion plants are not willing to use it as a fuel. Peat, the most common bedding type, is not considered a biofuel and consequently facilities that use biofuels are not interested in utilizing it. Also manure with a peat-based bedding contains chlorine and alkalis. Chlorine and alkali can cause damage to the technology in the boiler. All the facilities that were interested in the use horse manure as a fuel mentioned that only the manure with wood as bedding was considered by them.
Use of horse manure with wood-based bedding requires big and expensive additional investments to combustion plants. Plants would need to invest in boiler techniques, fuel processing and transportation to benefit from a relatively low amount of fuel. These issues explain low interest towards using horse manure as a fuel in combustion plants.
According to the report, disposal of horse manure is not a significant problem in South-West Finland. Most of the manure from stables ends up being used as a fertilizer in crop fields or by compost and fertilizer producers. These can be considered the best alternatives in terms of nutrient recycling.
At the moment of writing, approximately 4000 m³ of wood based horse manure was generated in the South-West Finland region. This is equivalent to about 2300MWh of heat, which is approximately equivalent to the heat used by a hundred medium-sized households annually. The annual potential of horse manure used with peat-based bedding is about 15 000 cubic meters, which is notably greater than that of wood-based horse manure. If stables that use peat as bedding started to use wood-based bedding, the potential of recovered energy from horse manure would increase notably
Efficiency in project networks : the role of inter-organizational relationships in project implementation
In many project-based industries such as construction and shipbuilding, the delivery of projects requires the participation of multiple heterogeneous firms. The objective of this dissertation is to explore how inter-organizational relationships influence the efficiency of the implementation phase in project networks. Project networks are defined as temporary inter-organizational networks set up for delivering a project to a client. Furthermore, it is examined how project implementation influences the development of inter-organizational relationships between firms involved in project networks. Based on a review of literature on project business, inter-organizational relationships, transaction cost economics, and critical incidents, a conceptual framework is developed to guide the multiple case study involving four project networks from the Finnish shipbuilding industry. Altogether, the empirical data analyzed in this study consists of a total of 40 personal interviews with individuals representing 13 different organizations, and a broad range of documentation including contracts, meeting memorandums and project plans.
The results of this study demonstrate evidence of a relation between inter-organizational relationships and the efficiency of project implementation. Critical incidents unforeseen by the participating actors were analyzed in the four project networks. A part of these critical incidents was found to be related to inter-organizational relationships and to contribute to the efficiency of project implementation by affecting the ex post transaction costs of monitoring, planning, and adapting transactions between involved firms. Furthermore, the contribution of critical incidents on the efficiency of project implementation was found to be predominantly unfavorable as increases, as opposed to decreases, in transaction costs were found as frequent. In two studied project networks, in which inter-organizational relationships between project network actors were characterized by high degrees of trust and dependence, inter-organizational relationships were found to frequently constitute strengths which reduced the unfavorable contribution of critical incidents to the efficiency of project implementation. In all four studied project networks, inter-organizational relationships were also found to frequently constitute weaknesses which increased the unfavorable contribution of critical incidents to efficiency of project implementation. The results of this study also illustrate that the influence of project implementation on the development of inter-organizational relationships between project network actors can often be characterized as modest, as inter-organizational relationships in three studied project networks were rather stable across the observed one year period. However, when project network actors assess the responses of each other to critical incidents as unacceptable, even highly established inter-organizational relationships may deteriorate rapidly as occurred in one of the four studied project networks.
This dissertation complements existing knowledge concerning the relatedness of inter-organizational relationships and efficiency of economic transactions by describing how critical incidents function as a mechanism relating these two concepts in project network contexts. In addition, this study contributes to our understanding of how inter-organizational relationships develop between firms operating in project-based industries. Further, this dissertation sheds new light to our understanding of the factors that contribute to the efficiency of work carried out in project contexts by emphasizing the importance of transaction costs that incur between involved firms during the implementation phase of the project life cycle. The results of this study have also implications for practitioners responsible for marketing and managing inter-firm projects who can be considered, to a considerable extent, accountable for both the development of inter-organizational relationships between firms they are employed by and other firms in the surrounding business environment, and the efficiency of work carried out in projects in which their employing firms participate
