kommen aus dem sogenannten Plastikmeer. Aus
der medialen Berichterstattung sind die Bilder
der hektarweit von Plastikfolien überzogenen
Landschaft bekannt. Ebenso hier anknüpfende
Analysen global-wirtschaftlicher Problemlagen.
SAN AGUSTIN – EBBE IM PLASTIKMEER lässt jedoch exemplarisch die einheimischen Bäuerinnen und Bauern zu Wort kommen, die die Gewächshäuser aufgebaut haben und betreiben. Was ist ihre Perspektive auf die EU-subventionierten Entwicklungen in ihrer Region? Wie sieht ihre Wirklichkeit, ihr Alltag aus?
Eine Ernteperiode lang begleiten die drei jungen
Filmemacher/innen Gudrun Gruber, Alexander
Hick und Michael Schmitt die Vorkommnisse in
San Agustin. Dabei lernen wir den mürrischen
Junggesellen José Maria kennen, der zwischen all seinen Zucchini lieber ständig für sich wäre, als sich mit irgendeinem Menschen abgeben zu
müssen. Von der grundsätzlichen Unfähigkeit
der Politik ist er ebenso überzeugt, wie von der
medialen Propaganda gegen ihn und seine hart arbeitenden Nachbar/innen. Die Familie Crespo
versucht sich durch vielfältige Beschäftigungsfelder über Wasser zu halten. Sie bauen Gemüse an, züchten Schafe und hegen und pflegen ihren
eigenen gigantischen Kompostberg. All das ist nichts außergewöhnliches für Paco, der zusammen mit seiner Familie die kleine Kneipe im Dorf
betreibt. Bei ihm versammeln sich die Bauern, um über ihre Sorgen und Nöte zu sprechen.
In neun Kapiteln loten die drei Filmemacher/innen die verschiedensten Aspekte des andalusischen Dorfes mit ironischer Distanz aus – von
den Beschäftigungsbedingungen illegaler Einwander/innen bis hin zur „Gurkenkrise“. Geschickt werden Bilder von verrottenden Gemüsebergen mit denen der Partymeilen und Bettenburgen direkt nebenan montiert. Denn in der
Provinz Almería im Süden Spaniens paart sich der exorbitante Obst- und Gemüseanbau mit der
wild wuchernden Urlaubsindustrie. Ein treffendes Sinnbild für die dekadente Ignoranz gegenwärtiger Lebensstile.
SAN AGUSTIN ist eine beachtliche Nachwuchsarbeit, die einen bitter-süßen Einblick in eine Fülle sehr ernster Problematiken gibt. Der erfrischenden und subtilen Vermittlungsweise ist besonders zu wünschen, dass sie zum Nachdenken

Variations on the Author
No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
