Insulated bayonet freeze pipes were investigate using experimental and numerical models.A numerical model for the air insulation was built and validated against literature experiments. The analysis showed that the boundary condition on the end caps can have important effects on the natural convection's process.A laboratory-scale model was built and its readings were shown to be repeatable. Experimental results were compared to a numerical model for frozen and unfrozen regimes. The active and transition zones were easily validated. However, the passive zone showed significant difference. A Nusselt number of around 10 would be required to make the data fit, which is unrealistic. Further research is recommended. The passive zone's numerical model is extended to test the influence of eccentricity on heat transfer. As long as there is no contact, the effects are minimal. However, a fully eccentric passive zone increases the heat transfer rate by a whole order of magnitude, and is thus to be avoided at all cost.

Experimental and numerical investigations into thermal and hydraulic characteristics of artificial ground freezing

The artificial ground freezing (AGF) system has been extensively employed as an excavation-support method in mining and civil engineering projects. Over the last few decades, AGF system has become one of the most favorable ground-support procedures in critical, long-term environmental projects such as underground uranium mines and hazardous-waste management sites. Despite its advantages, most of the conventional AGF systems require continuous energy input for extended periods of time to maintain sufficient frozen body. Essentially, the AGF process involves transient, multi-phase, conjugate heat transfer and fluid flow in a porous ground and bayonet freeze pipes. These complex phenomena and interactions are not well understood, making it difficult to predict the performance, the thermal ground response and, thus, optimize the system. It is also important to explore and devise new ideas that could lead to a more cost-effective and sustainable AGF system. This dissertation focuses on the thermal and hydraulic characteristics of AGF systems. It starts with reviewing current research and technology of AGF system to identify the research gaps and formulate research directions. Further, a controlled novel laboratory-scale experiment that mimics the AGF process is conceived and developed. The apparatus is thermally controlled and equipped with advanced measurement instrumentation and control systems. It provides a deep understanding of the AGF process and generates a comprehensive database for thorough model validation. The rig is further used to introduce and demonstrate a novel concept of freezing-on-demand (FoD) for the first time to save energy while maintaining safe operation in AGF system.A mathematical model that effectively incorporates the multi-physics, multi-scale transport phenomena in the porous ground structure and the freeze pipes is derived, analyzed, and validated against the experimental data. The validated model is extended to mine field conditions to study the impact of various design and operating parameters, such as pipe spacing, groundwater seepage, ground temperature and freeze brine temperature. The growth of the frozen body and closure time is analyzed by quantifying the net energy flux and groundwater streamlines. The heatlines visualization is further implemented for the first time in AGF process to better understand the heat transfer mechanism that governs the ice growth. The model's framework is then employed to evaluate the energy consumption of the AGF system operates under continuous and FoD modes. The results suggest that the concept of the FoD could reduce energy consumption by up to 46%, as compared to the conventional counterpart which highlights its potential for practical applications.

Observation of iron ore particle flow in a mineral spiral concentrator by positron emission particle tracking (PEPT)

This thesis describes how positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) was used to obtain detailed information on ore particle behaviour within a mineral spiral concentrator.A review of literature has shown a number of experimental measurements of clear water flow in spiral concentrator. However, this review highlighted the lack of quantitative information on the particle behaviour within a dense pulp, used in the operation of this equipment. Thus, for the first time, observations of separation of minerals at the flow scale were undertaken and are reported in this thesis. The description of mineral particle flow field in the spiral concentrator was made possible by the following work. First, large mineral particles (larger than 1000 micrometer) were activated via direct activation in a MC40 cyclotron (35 mega-electron volt Helium-3 beam). Second, a new procedure was developed for subsequent breakage, sizing and selection of surface fragments of a large particle in order to obtain small activated mineral tracers (approx. 100 micrometer). This is the first time such small representative mineral tracers were produced and enabled the observation of particle behaviour in dense and opaque pulp. Considering the low amount of activity carried by these small tracers, a high performance tracking system consisting of modular positron emission detector was designed and built. Subsequently, this new modular detector assembly was compared to an established detection system and tracking error was determined for particles of different mineral composition, size, speed and activity. Finally, the modular detector system was used to observe, for the first time, the characteristic flow of hematite (5260 kilogram per cubic meter) and quartz (2650 kilogram per cubic meter) particles with size ranging between 90 and 1400 micrometer within a spiral concentrator. All measurements were carried out in a mineral (iron ore) pulp consisting of 20 percent solids by mass.In this thesis, the results describing mineral particle flow fields are presented in the form of trajectories, velocities, accelerations and resultant forces on the mineral tracer particle. Of key importance is the particle behaviour within the spiral secondary flow. For quartz particle of size 300 to 355 micrometer, radial velocity magnitude within the secondary flow ranged from 0.1 metre per second in the lower inward moving layer of the flow and reached up to 0.2 meter per second in the upper outward moving layers. This information is critical for the development of more efficient spiral concentrator since ore separation is a direct result of particle behaviour in this secondary flow. The new quantitative information obtained from this work will be used for the improvement and validation of particle and fluid flow simulations, now possible thanks to the advances in computational power.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
