The Solar Pons omnibus
The Solar Pons Omnibus is a collection of detective fiction stories by author August Derleth. The set collects all of the Solar Pons stories of August Derleth. The stories are pastiches of the Sherlock Holmes tales of Arthur Conan Doyle. The stories are arranged by their internal chronology, rather than by the date of their release. The stories had earlier appeared under the Arkham House imprint of Mycroft & Moran
The global revolution. A history of International Communism 1917-1991
The Global Revolution. A History of International Communism 1917-1991 establishes a relationship between the history of communism and the main processes of globalization in the past century. Drawing on a wealth of archival sources, the author analyses the multifaceted and contradictory relationship between the Soviet Union and the international communist movement, to show how communism played a major part in the formation of our modern world. The volume presents the argument that during the age of wars from 1914 to 1945, the establishment of the Soviet state in Russia and the birth of the communist movement had an enormous impact because of their promise of world revolution and international civil war. Such perspective appeared even more plausible in the aftermath of the Second World War and of revolution in China, which paved the way for the expansion of communism in the post-colonial world. Communism challenged the West in the Cold War - by means of anti-capitalist modernization and anti-imperialist mobilization - showing itself to be a powerful factor in the politicization of global trends. However, the international legitimacy of communism declined rapidly in the post-war era. Soviet power exposed its inability to exercise hegemony, as distinct from domination. The consequences of Sovietization in Europe and the break between the Soviet Union and China were the primary reasons for the decline of communist influence and appeal. Since communism lost its political credibility and cultural cohesion, its global project had failed. The ground was prepared for the devastating impact of Western globalization on communist regimes in Europe and the Soviet Union
María Magdalena Campos-Pons – Una artista sabia y extraordinaria
María Magdalena Campos-Pons is an Afro-Cuban multidisciplinary artist with a unique and provocative style that makes use of a variety of materials. The human form is a recurring theme appearing in her work. Campos-Pons\u27 art is displayed in museums worldwide. The artist was recognized as one of 2023\u27s MacArthur Fellows in recognition of her body of work. This essay provides some general information about Campos-Pons\u27 life and art, introducing the reader to Campos-Pons\u27 three-panel self-portrait, Secrets of the Magnolia Tree, as an example of the artist\u27s use of art to elevate the nobility, strength, and caring nature of women - particularly Black women of the world. The essay also provides insight into the student author\u27s own love and appreciation for art and her reflections on the art style of María Magdalena Campos-Pons in particular. The essay is written in Spanish and is an adaptation of an assignment submitted as a requirement for clas
It is all downhill from here: a typological study of the role of syllable contact in Romance languages
The purpose of this paper is to explore, on the basis of a quite extensive set of processes drawn from Romance languages, the nature and the effects of the SYLLABLE CONTACT constraint in Optimality Theory. In order to achieve that, we investigate and formalize a) the process of regressive manner assimilation that applies in some varieties of Catalan as well as in Lenguadocian Occitan, 2) the processes of onset strengthening and epenthesis that occur in Catalan, 3) the process of 's' rhotacism that is found in Majorcan Catalan, in some dialects of Sardinian and in some dialects of Galician, among other Romance languages, 4) the process of 's' gliding that arises in Lenguadocian Occitan, and, finally, 5) the selection between epenthesis and deletion in word-initial consonantal clusters violating the minimum sonority distance constraints in Catalan. The analysis of these processes, most of them not considered in the literature devoted to SYLLABLE CONTACT, leads to some important theoretical implications: a) SYLLABLE CONTACT should not be regarded as a single constraint which categorically bans coda-onset clusters with rising sonority, but it should be decomposed into a universal hierarchy of constraints targeting all possible sonority distances between adjacent heterosyllabic segments, as originally suggested by Murray & Vennemann (1983), formalized in OT terms by Bat-El (1996) and Gouskova (2001, 2002, 2004), and applied to Romance languages in Pons (2003b, 2004a, 2005b); b) the sonority scale in Catalan should distinguish flaps and trills, the latter being less sonorous, as previously proposed for Catalan and other Romance languages in Bonet & Mascaró; (1997), Parker (2002), Pons (2004a, 2005b); c) the sonority scale of Catalan should treat separately voiced and voiceless stops, the latter being less sonorous, as traditionally put forward in some studies devoted to syllable structure (see, for instance, Steriade 1982, for Attic Greek; Davis 1990, for Italian; and Blevins 1995).The publisher of the journal in which this article appears does not permit the archiving of this or any other version of the article in the Rutgers Optimality Archive. Probing turbulence intermittency via Auto Regressive Moving Average models
We suggest a new approach to probing intermittency corrections to the Kolmogorov law in turbulent flows based on the Auto-Regressive Moving-Average modeling of turbulent time series. We introduce an index ϒ that measures the distance from a Kolmogorov-Obukhov model in the Auto-Regressive Moving-Average models space. Applying our analysis to Laser Doppler Velocimetry measurements in a von Kármán swirling flow, we show that ϒ is proportional to traditional intermittency corrections computed from structure functions. Therefore it provides the same information, using much shorter time series. We conclude that ϒ is a suitable index to reconstruct intermittency in experimental turbulent fields
À l’origine des études sanskrites : la Grammatica Sanskritica de Jean-François Pons S.J.
The article “At the origin of Sanskrit studies: the Grammatica Sanskritica of Jean-François Pons S.J.” is a critical review of the edition of this grammar by Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat (2020), to which work it provides a series of additions, in particular on the two other Jesuit grammars of Sanskrit prior to this one; on the engineer Deidier, Pons’s companion (who initiated the collecting of Sanskrit manuscripts) and correspondent, and possible author of La gentilité du Bengala (fn. 14); on the scholarly letters of Pons, and the important supplement to his 1740 account of the philosophies of India found in his 1732-33 catalogue of manuscripts; on Father Coeurdoux as the translator of the second part of Pons’s grammar into French (with an argument related to the transcription of Sanskrit, developed in fn. 38); and, finally, on the genesis of the fragmented composition of this grammar and the more precise chronology that it is possible to establish for it within the years 1729-39.L’article « À l’origine des études sanskrites : la Grammatica Sanskritica de Jean-François Pons S.J.
Parole chiave: Ponç Pons, Salvatore Quasimodo, illomania, identitat menorquina, literatura italianaAbstract: The aim of this work is to study the influence of Salvatore Quasimodo’s poetry on Ponç Pons’s literature. The work is divided into three parts. In the first, the literary influences of the Menorcan poet during his first poetic stage will be analysed. Despite not finding echoes of the Italian author, this section will serve to explain the origin of the vindication of his Menorcan identity, which is an aspect that links with the literature of Quasimodo. In the second and third part of the study, the influence of Quasimodo in the second and third literary stage of Ponç Pons will be analyzed. The analysis will therefore be diachronic and with a comparative perspective. Keywords: Ponç Pons, Salvatore Quasimodo, island man, Menorcan identity, Italian literatur
