    Read counts at multiple attenuation levels as an object localization technique using passive RFID tags

    Radio Frequency Technologies (RFID) are experiencing rapid development and business, retail, manufacturing and healthcare are the major application areas benefiting from it. We describe and analyze an algorithm which helps in tracking of medical equipment and personnel and patients in a Trauma Bay. We adapt the Read Count algorithm to be used at multiple attenuation levels as a localization technique. The input parameter to the algorithm is the read count value which gives a measure of number of times the back-scattered radio frequencies from passive tags has been received by the antenna. Special attention has to be given to the placement of antennas to get the optimum result. The detection of multiple tags and human occlusion are two major concerns which we have tried to solve by suing multiple horizontal antennas along with 1 vertical antenna. We have discussed the results and analysis of such a configuration and accordingly given a conclusion.     Assessing the Impact of Climate Modes on Extreme Arctic Sea Ice Using Reanalysis Data

    Arctic Sea ice variability arises from both anthropogenic forcing and natural climate modes such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Arctic Oscillation (AO). While these modes are known to influence sea ice concentration (SIC) and thickness (SIT), their impacts on seasonal extremes remain less understood. In this study, the extreme SIC and SIT are investigated using ERA5 and CMEMS reanalysis products, applying a non-stationary generalised extreme value (GEV) framework with climate indices as covariates. Results indicate that winter and spring sea-ice variability is most pronounced in the Barents and Greenland Seas, where strong Atlantic inflows and dynamic atmospheric conditions make the marginal ice zone highly sensitive to even minor perturbations. Conversely, in the central and peripheral Arctic, variability maximises in summer and autumn, when melt processes, ice-albedo feedback and delayed freeze-up intensify interannual fluctuations. ENSO exerts notable seasonal effects: El Niño events enhance extreme SIC in the Laptev Sea but reduce it in the East Siberian Sea during summer, while SIT extremes increase in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) and decline in the East Siberian Sea across all seasons. NAO-related anomalies include stronger SIC and SIT extremes in the Beaufort Sea and CAA and reductions in the Chukchi Sea during autumn. AO effects include increased SIC in the Chukchi Sea during summer and autumn, but decreases in the Beaufort and CAA in summer; SIT extremes rise in the CAA during spring but fall in the Beaufort Sea in summer. Composite analysis further reveals that out-of-phase NAO-AO states intensify autumn sea ice extremes, whereas in-phase conditions exert weaker influences. These results emphasise the distinct and seasonally varying roles of climate modes in shaping Arctic Sea ice extremes, offering insights into future Arctic climate variability

    Three scholars at work: making sense of the twenty-first-century academy

    In this chapter, we explore our ideas of academia, university life and professionalism in the twenty-first century, based on our personal experiences as three scholars at different stages of our academic careers. We are three scholars working at the same institution – a PhD candidate, a senior lecturer and a scholarly manager. As we prepared this chapter, we engaged in a series of trialogues where we shared our expectations and perceptions of the nature of scholarship as we have lived it and continue to do so, in our own academic worlds. This enabled us to explore our somewhat shared vision and conceptualisation of scholarship, academia and professionalism. By engaging in a scholarly discussion of scholarship, we suggest that this chapter is valuable in two key ways. First, the scholarly activity of investigation, in itself, enhances our own professional self-awareness, and second, we see the communication of our joys and concerns about the nature of the academy to be part of a wider conversation that scholars, in our opinion, have a responsibility to engage in beyond narrow disciplinary boundaries and career orientations.Peter John Sandiford, Ankit Agarwal, Sam Well

    There was an era when bark of mandrake plant, boiled in wine was used to administer anesthesia. Ether, after reigning the kingdom of anaesthesiology for more than a century, came to be superseded by newer and newer agents. Anaesthesiology has witnessed tremendous developments since infancy. The introduction of advanced airway adjuncts, labour analgesia, patient controlled analgesia, fibreoptics, Bispectral Index monitors, workstations, simulators and robotic surgeries are only to name a further few. Anaesthesia for robotic surgery received much impetus and is still a dream to come true in many countries. But then, the rapid spin in technology and fast sophistication of medical field has even surpassed this. The next event to venture is entry of robots into human body made possible by a culmination of intricate medicine and fine technology that is Nanotechnology. This article briefly introduces the field of nanotechnology in relation to its potential benefits to the field of anaesthesiology. As with any new tecnique or application, nanotechnology as applied to anaesthesiology has tremendous potential for research and exploration. This article therefore orients the reader′s mind towards the immense potential and benefits that can be tapped by carrying out further studies and experimentations.The literature was searched using databases, peer reviewed journals and books for over a period of one year (till December 2011). The search was carried out using keywords as nanotechnology, robotics, anesthesiology etc. Initially a master database was formed including human as well as animal studies. Later on the broad topic area was narrowed down to developments in nanotechnology as applied to anesthesiology. Further filtering of search results were done based on selection of researches and developments relating to local, regional and general anesthesia as well as critical care and pain and palliative care

    This report discusses and documents the work done by the author over a year, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Computer Engineering of the Nanyang Technological University. Author has precisely summarized his detailed workings in the development of the social interactive media application over cloud, in this report. This report mostly comprises of the Mobile Application Development over the Android OS (2.3.3). The main focus here is to enhance the traditional TV watching experience, by increasing retention through social interaction, y providing a chatting experience while consuming the video real time or leveraging on existing social networking sites. The report is organized such that it defines the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) for the entire Application Development process. Author in the introductory chapter gives the motivation, background and the general ‘layman’ insight to the project idea. Subsequently the report dwells into more focused content to explain thoroughly the development process employed by the author. Author then describes his viewpoint on the existing literature, available to him, and critically analyses each one of them, in order to opt for the most optimal design. Then from requirements, activity, system design to object design, author caters to all of these aspects of the SDLC in full detail and with the help of standard UML diagrams represents and defines them. Implementing the proposed design into a functional application is the next step. And then the author concludes the SDLC by testing his application on a real setup under ‘unfamiliar conditions’. Further, after being convinced by his efforts in the development of the application, in the concluding chapter author describes the future of such an application in the coming years, and the wide pool of opportunities, a research of this high potential promises to offer to the society.Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Engineering

    Validating a genomic convergence and network analysis approach using association analysis of identified candidate genes in Alzheimer’s disease

    Previously, we demonstrated an integrated genomic convergence and network analysis approach to identify the candidate genes associated with the complex neurodegenerative disorder, Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we performed a pilot study to validate the in silico approach by studying the association of genetic variants from three identified critical genes, APOE, EGFR, and ACTB, with AD. A total of 103 patients with AD and 146 healthy controls were recruited. A total of 46 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) spanning the three genes were genotyped, of which only 19 SNPs were included in the final analyses after excluding non-polymorphic and Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium-violating SNPs. Apart from our previously reported APOE ε4, four other SNPs in APOE (rs405509, rs7259620, -rs769449, and rs7256173), one in EGFR (rs6970262), and one in ACTB (rs852423) showed a significant association with AD (p < 0.05). Our results validate the reliability of genomic convergence and network analysis approach in identifying the AD-associated candidate genes
