Cross-Border Cooperation: Subverting Sovereignty?
Work on European spatial planning has led me to criticise what I call territorialism. It conceives of the world in terms of a seamless cover of sovereign stateslooking after its territory each as if it were its property. In the European Unionthough, states are enveloped by a superstructure. Does this mean that there is aEuropean territory and, if so, how does it relate to the territories of its MemberStates? The issue becomes manifest in such efforts, as there have been undertaken,to arrive at a form of European spatial planning.Spatial Planning and Strateg
Cross-Cultural Meta-Analyses
In the enormous collection of cross-cultural data that have been published during the last few decades it is difficult to perceive patterns. There is a clear need for systematizing the vast amount of cross-cultural studies and for developing models that explain cross-cultural differences in psychology. Two methods of cross-cultural meta-analysis can be distinguished. First, the instrument-based method of comparing data for one instrument across countries is suitable for instruments which have been administered in many countries. Second, a domain-based meta-analysis used a thematic domain from which culture-comparative studies are sampled instead of one specific instrument or method
Evaluation and genetic analysis of tall fescue genotypes for summer stress tolerance
During summer months, overall turf quality of cool-season turfgrasses commonly deteriorates significantly. This loss in turf quality can mainly be attributed to the combination of high temperatures and low soil moisture. The combination of these two stresses is commonly referred to as “summer stress”. Tall fescue (Lolium arundinacea [Schreb.] Darbysh) exhibits substantial variation in performance under summer stress between genotypes. The objectives of this thesis were to [1] evaluate diverse tall fescue genotypes being subjected to heat, drought, and/or combinations of both stresses growing in a growth chamber, rainout shelter, and under field conditions, and [2] evaluate progeny of a full diallel cross and polycross block made with tall fescues exhibiting different degrees of summer stress tolerance. Twenty-four experimental tall fescue genotypes, twelve summer stress tolerant and twelve summer stress sensitive, were selected for evaluation while growing under field conditions during the summer of 2010 at the Rutgers Agricultural Experiment Station located in Adelphia, NJ. A growth chamber study subjected these genotypes to heat and drought stress alone and in combination. The performance of genotypes in the heat stress treatment was similar to the performance of the genotypes under field conditions, however summer stress tolerant genotypes did not perform significantly better in the drought or heat + drought treatments. Mowed space-plants of these 24 genotypes were evaluated while growing in an automatic rainout shelter structure over two years. Genotypes selected as summer stress tolerant had higher quality ratings than the summer stress sensitive group. Additionally, quality ratings in the rainout shelter were moderately correlated with quality ratings in the heat stress growth chamber. A full diallel cross and a polycross block were used to estimate narrow-sense heritability values of 0.66 and 0.48, respectively. Heterosis was found to be significant in 40% of the diallel crosses. Data from the diallel and polycross block indicate breeding for enhanced summer stress tolerance in tall fescue would result in 52% and 32% improvements per selection cycle, respectively, when making recurrent selections of the top 5% of the population.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby James W. Measurement of the Differential Production Cross Section of W Bosons and Charge Asymmetry at s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS Detector
This document presents a measurement of the production cross section of W
bosons and of its charge asymmetry in proton-proton collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector. These measurements provide information on the momentum fraction of the protons carried by the partons contributing to the W production and therefore allow to better understand the parton distribution functions of the proton.
The W candidate events are selected in the Wenu decay mode. The LAr electromagnetic calorimeter plays an important role in the detection of electrons and the author has worked on the on-line energy reconstruction in the LAr detectors. A subject which is treated in some detail is the evaluation of the charge misidentification rates for electrons and positrons. This is a key ingredient for charge related measurements such as the W charge asymmetry.
In this document, the W production cross section times the branching ratio is studied inclusively, as a function of the lepton pseudorapidity and as a double differential measurement as a function of the lepton pseudorapidity and transverse energy. The charge asymmetry measurement is presented as a function of the lepton pseudorapidity and as a double differential measurement as well. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2011 and correspond to 4.7 fb1
The development of a novel native prothrombin assay for the more efficient management of oral anticoagulation therapy
Disturbances of the natural balance between pro-coagulant and anticoagulant systems, due to hereditary or acquired factors may result in haemorrhagic or thrombotic diseases.
Currently the INR/ISI coagulation monitoring system, introduced in 1983 by the World Health Organisation (WHO), is that of choice for most anticoagulation management clinics. Patients undergoing anticoagulation therapy must regularly attend specialised outpatient clinics for the close monitoring and maintenance of their INR. The automated laboratory caters for rapid online simultaneous analysis of multiple blood samples, resulting in the calculation of a patient’s INR from the recorded prothrombin time. The insensitivity of the prothrombin time test has been well documented, requiring a reduction in the prothrombin concentration of 45 % prior to the materialisation of clinically significant prothrombin times.
The project aims to employ three avenues of biotechnology to aid in the development of an immuno or molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) based anticoagulation assay. The project will utilise computational molecular modelling in an attempt to visualise the tertiary structure of human prothrombin, which will allow the rational selection of antigenic sites for molecular imprinting or antibody production.
An aqueous, prothrombin-imprinted homo-polymer was grafted to the gold surface of a surface plasmon resonance biosensor (Biacore). The Biacore allowed the real time monitoring of imprinted polymer binding characteristics to i
homogeneous protein solutions. As a direct comparison of two technologies, molecular imprinting and immuno technology, polyclonal antibodies showing specificity towards the same prothrombin antigen were immobilised onto Biacore chips. The imprinted polymer graft and polyclonal antibody based assays recognised homogeneous solutions of prothrombin at a concentration range of 0.01 nM to 14.2 nM and 0.01 nM to 0.5 nM respectively. A randomised preliminary clinical trial was initiated to compare the two assays’ ability to differentiate plasma samples with a variety of INR values.
The results thus far show promise for the development of a new anticoagulation assay using molecularly imprinted polymer technology. The ultimate aim for this project is to develop a consistently more accurate point-of-care anticoagulation therapy monitoring kit, incorporating this new technology, which can replace or be used concomitantly with the INR/ISI system currently in use. This thesis raises more questions regarding the efficacy of oral anticoagulation therapy (OACT) and argues for and against the necessity of a novel OACT management assay
Kościoły bożogrobców w Małopolsce. Z badań nad patrociniami i relikwiami (XII–XVI w.)
The author presents the findings of his own studies on the presence of relics and dedications in the churches of Canons Regular of the Holy Sepulchre in medieval Polonia Minor (covering the former Krakow and Sandomierz voivideships). The article reveals important accounts in Samuel Nakielski’s chronicle. The first account relates bringing the soil from Jerusalem by Jaksa and is known in literature. The second account concerns the possession of the relics of the Holy Cross by the monastery of Canons Regular of the Holy Sepulchre, hitherto unknown in literature. The author formulates a thesis on the existence of important relics of the Passion in the Miechów monastery. Key source accounts on dedications were analysed. It was indicated that the primary dedication of the Miechów church towards the end of the 18th century was a combined invocation of the Holy Sepulchre, the Holy Spirit and Blessed Virgin Mary. The author also extensively analyses the dedication of the church in Żarnowiec, with dedications to both feasts related to the Holy Cross, to the Holy Spirit, the Holy Sepulchre and Blessed Virgin Mary. The dedications of 10 other churches administered by Canons Regular of the Holy Sepulchre are also discussed. In addition, the author presents a substantial collection of data on the dedications of surviving altars and chapels in relation to the Miechów church and St Jadwiga’s Church in Stradom. In conjunction with the information on numerous relics of saints, the findings should become a departure point for further studies. Wiele miejsca autor poświęcił również analizie wezwania kościoła w Żarnowcu, gdzie wystąpiły wezwania do obu świąt związanych z Krzyżem św., do Ducha Świętego, Grobu Pańskiego i N. Marii Panny.
Cross-Border Banking in Central and Eastern Europe
The paper looks at cross-border banking as a mode of providing banking services. It offers an overview of World Trade Organization and European Union regulations on the internationalization of banks. Both legal systems recognize cross-border banking as equivalent to other modes of financial services supply, the author says. The empirical analysis focuses on the banking sectors of 10 Central and Eastern European countries from 1998 to 2010. The role of cross-border banking services as a percentage of the total volume of loans/deposits makes it possible to conclude that the interbank markets are integrated across borders, Kruszka says. The retail banking sectors are dominated by banks that have established a local presence. The paper also examines the determinants of cross-border bank flows for the nonfinancial sector. The author uses panel data techniques. The empirical results suggest that GDP growth, the exchange rate, and financial turbulence are the most important factors behind changes in cross-border lending. The growth of cross-border deposits depends on the difference between the interest rates and the depreciation of the borrower country’s currency.

The text deals with the possibilities of the utilisation of cross-curricular themed Environmental education in the school subject, “Ethical education in Slovakia”, especially in lower secondary education. The text partly stems from work on the project APVV-14-0176 “Didactic Means Facilitating the Implementation of Selected Cross-Curricular Topics in the Teaching of Ethical Education at the Second Level of Primary School”, and offers a brief overview on how the topics of ethical education may overlap with environmental education. To achieve this goal, the first part of the text briefly characterises ethical education in Slovakia, and introduces its key figures and principles, as well as the elements of environmental education in ethical education, and a brief summary of the content of the cross-curricular topic, “Environmental Education in the Current National Curriculum” follow. The suggestions for implementation of environmental education in ethical education in Slovakia, form the last part of the paper, where the author also describes some problem areas of the subjects. The author concludes that it is also possible to apply environmental themes in current ethical education; however, it requires some creativity, critical thinking, suitable teaching materials, and competent, dedicated teachers.Opracowanie to dotyczy możliwości wykorzystania międzyprzedmiotowej tematyki edukacji ekologicznej w ramach przedmiotu szkolnego edukacji etycznej, zwłaszcza w szkołach średnich I stopnia na Słowacji. Propozycje wprowadzenia edukacji ekologicznej do edukacji etycznej na Słowacji stanowią ostatnią część artykułu, w której autorka opisuje niektóre problematyczne obszary tematyczne. Autorka konkluduje, że wątki środowiskowe można zastosować także w obecnej edukacji etycznej, jednak wymaga to kreatywności, krytycznego myślenia, odpowiednich materiałów dydaktycznych i kompetentnych, oddanych nauczycieli
