However, majority of the existing models for representation learning either completely ignore this hierarchy, treating the labels as permutation invariant, or attempt to utilize this information using less desirable distance metrics with bounded dimensionality. This leads to distortion of the semantic context in the label hierarchy, and also adversely affect it's performance on the in-distribution (ID) classification task. In addition, in the context of real-world machine learning systems, Out-of-distribution (OOD) detection is an even more challenging and critical task to ensure reliability of the deployed models. However, the current distance-based approaches do not consider any structured knowledge and rely on a distance measurement from the ID cluster-centroids, learnt in a label invariant fashion. To approach these challenges, in this thesis, we propose using hyperbolic geometry for incorporating this rich structured hierarchy about the label space into the representation learning. We demonstrate that accurately embedding the label information can lead to more fine-grained learning of structure-informed features, which are discriminative and helpful for a variety of tasks. For this purpose, we propose a novel method HypCPCC: Hyperbolic Cophenetic Correlation Coefficient to embed the label hierarchy into features using a powerful hyperbolic geometry based tree regularization objective. Our proposed objective can easily be combined and optimized with any classification loss for improving representation learning. We also empirically demonstrate that HypCPCC accurately embeds the hierarchical relationships between the labels in web-scale real-world vision datasets and leads to learning semantically rich features that result in simultaneous improvements in the performance of both in-distribution (ID) classification tasks (upto 1%) and AUROC on Out-of-Distribution (OOD) detection tasks (upto 4%). Motivated by the expressiveness of hyperbolic geometry in embedding the tree-based structures, we also propose two principled non-parametric hyperbolic-distance based OOD detection scores: HypKNN+ and HypDist-O. We demonstrate that using these scores can lead to improvements in OOD detection FPR95 upto 2%. Finally, we also empirically show that the learnt features from our proposed methodology are geometrically and semantically more interpretable using hyperbolic visualizations, paving the way for explainable feature learning using hierarchical label information

The title of S.P. Sinha\u27s book, What Is Law?, is somewhat deceptive, for the author ambitiously tries to do more than merely define the concept of law in well under 300 pages. After the introductory historical and philosophical overview of his initial chapter, Sinha uses the balance of his book to summarize the major theories of law, including how law arises, how it is applied, and why it is important in society. The work is less of an original attempt by its writer to answer the question posed by the title than it is an effort to seek such an answer by means of surveying- albeit briefly in each instance -the views of the major thinkers in this field
Bollywood cinema: A critical genealogy
Get PDF"Bollywood" has finally made it to the Oxford English Dictionary. The 2005 edition defines it as: "a name for the Indian popular film industry, based in Bombay. Origin 1970s. Blend of Bombay and Hollywood." The incorporation of the word in the OED acknowledges the strength of a film industry which, with the coming of sound in 1931, has produced some 9,000 films. (This must not be confused with the output of Indian cinema generally, which would be four times more). What is less evident from the OED definition is the way in which the word has acquired its current meaning and has displaced its earlier descriptors (Bombay Cinema, Indian Popular Cinema, Hindi Cinema), functioning, perhaps even horrifyingly, as an "empty signifier" (Prasad) that may be variously used for a reading of popular Indian cinema. The triumph of the term (over the others) is nothing less than spectacular and indicates, furthermore, the growing global sweep of this cinema not just as cinema qua cinema but as cinema qua social effects and national cultural coding. Although Indian film producers in particular, and pockets of Indian spectators generally, continue to feel uneasy with it (the vernacular press came around to using "Bollywood" only reluctantly), its ascendancy has been such that Bombay Dreams (the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical) and the homegrown Merchants of Bollywood both become signifiers of a cultural logic which transcends cinema and is a global marker of Indian modernity. As the Melbourne (March 2006) closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games showed, Bollywood will be the cultural practice through which Indian national culture will be projected when the games are held in Delhi in 2010. International games (the Olympics, World Cup Soccer, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and so on) are often expressions of a nation's own emerging modernity. De suas obras focamos aspectos gerais dos romances São Bernardo e Vidas Secas. O objetivo principal é analisar as personagens Madalena, do romance São Bernardo, e sinha Vitória, da obra Vidas Secas, e evidenciar os contrastes entre as personagens de Graciliano Ramos. Madalena e sinha Vitória são constituídas de um humanismo e generosidade. A primeira é apresentada como mulher culta, inteligente, humanista, que reflete sobre diversos problemas. Já a segunda possui um sonho que a impulsiona seguir em frente, em busca de uma realidade melhor. Sinha Vitória também é o ser mais pensante daquele grupo de retirantes. Para isso, a pesquisa interpretativa teve como base os dados apresentados pelos estudos de Calheiros (2006), Magalhães (2001), Santos (2009), entre os autores que discorrem sobre o referido autor e suas obras. Temos a pretensão de enfatizar a situação e o papel da mulher nordestina, e revelar seu valor no contexto social de cada obra. Este trabalho irá expor a importância da mulher nordestina, sua força, coragem e determinação ao enfrentar as dificuldades presentes no sertão nordestino. Constatou-se que são mulheres distintas e que ambas as personagens são fortes. Madalena é silenciada para não perder sua autenticidade, enquanto, sinha Vitória cala-se em respeito à sociedade patriarcal que não admite que as mulheres tenham voz ativa.PALAVRAS CHAVE: Madalena. From his works we focused on the São Bernardo and Vidas Secas novels’ general aspects. The main objective is to analyze how characters Madalena, from the São Bernardo novel, and sinha Vitória, from work Vidas Secas, and highlight the contrasts between the characters by Graciliano Ramos. Madalena and sinha Vitória are made up of humanism and generosity. The first one is presented as a cultured, intelligent, humanist woman, she reflects about various problems. Already the second has a dream that drives her to move forward in search of a better reality. Sinha Vitoria is also the most thoughtful of the retired group. For that, interpretive research was based on data submitted by Calheiros (2006), Magellan (2001), Santos (2009) studies, among the authors who white about the author and his works. We intend to emphasize the situation and the role of northeastern women, and reveal their value in the social context of each work. This work will expose the importance of northeastern women, their strength, courage and determination in facing the difficulties present in the northeastern backlands. It has been found that they are distinct women and that both characters are strong. Madalena is silenced so as not to lose her authenticity, while, sinha Vitoria is silent in respect to the patriarchal society that does not admit that women have an active voice.KEYWORDS: Madalena. Her dual cultural heritage, poetic style, narrative strategies and thematic choices, inspired in equal measure by her own biography and her preoccupation with current social and political events, give rise to a global and dislocated view of the contemporary world, which the author scrutinises and questions with the same thirst for humanity and the same sense of revolt in the face of injustice, whatever the country or the cultural, political or religious context that makes the latter possible. At the same time, his texts underline the need to place literary reception in a post-national perspective, which is better able to capture the transformations of the literary in a post-migrant society.
