    Secure offloading and partitioning for heterogeneous CPU-FPGA systems

    Heterogeneous CPU-FPGA systems have been shown to achieve significant performance gains in domain-specific computing. However, contrary to the huge efforts invested on the performance acceleration, the community has not yet investigated the security consequences due to incorporating FPGA into the traditional CPU-based architecture. In fact, the interplay between CPU and FPGA in such a heterogeneous system may introduce brand new attack surfaces if not well controlled. We develop a hardware isolation-based secure architecture, namely HISA, to mitigate the identified new threats. HISA extends the CPU-based trusted execution environment (TEE) to the heterogeneous FPGA components to enhance the security of the CPU-FPGA system. To securely offload the application to the FPGA part of HISA, we develop ApproVer to verify the security of the FPGA IP cores by applying an approximate computing-based verification mechanism. To help developers deploy applications on HISA, we develop TZSlicer to securely partition the software by meeting the security requirements and maintaining the original functionality. Furthermore, we explore another dimension of heterogeneity by extending HISA to a local-cloud system to support secure and privacy-preserving computations offloaded from the local user to the remote service provider.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical reference

    Optimal entrainment with smooth, pulse, and square signals in weakly forced nonlinear oscillators

    AbstractA physical limit of entrainability of nonlinear oscillators is considered for an external weak signal (forcing). This limit of entrainability is characterized by the optimization problem maximizing the width of the Arnold tongue (the frequency-locking range versus forcing magnitude) under certain practical constraints. Here we show a solution to this optimization problem, thanks to a direct link to Hölder’s inequality. This solution defines an ideal forcing realizing the entrainment limit, and as the result, a fundamental limit of entrainment is clarified as follows. For 1:1 entrainment, we obtain (i) a construction of the global optimal forcing and a condition for its uniqueness in Lp-space with p>1, and (ii) a construction of the global optimal pulse-like forcings in L1-space, and for m:n entrainment (m≠n), some informations about the non-existence of the ideal forcing. (iii) In addition, we establish definite algorithms for obtaining the global optimal forcings for 1<p≤∞ and these pulse-like forcings for p=1. These theoretical findings are verified by systematic, extensive numerical calculations and simulations

    P3N-PIPO of Clover yellow vein virus exacerbates symptoms in pea infected with White clover mosaic virus and is implicated in viral synergism

    Mixed infection of pea (Pisum sativum) with Clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV) and White clover mosaic virus (WClMV) led to more severe disease symptoms (a phenomenon called viral synergism). Similar to the mixed ClYVV/WClMV infection, a WClMV-based vector encoding P3N-PIPO of ClYVV exacerbated the disease symptoms. Infection with the WClMV vector encoding ClYVV HC-Pro (a suppressor of RNA silencing involved in potyviral synergisms), also resulted in more severe symptoms, although to a lesser extent than infection with the vector encoding P3N-PIPO. Viral genomic RNA accumulated soon after inoculation (at 2 and 4 days) at higher levels in leaves inoculated with WClMV encoding HC-Pro but at lower levels in leaves inoculated with WClMV encoding P3N-PIPO than in peas infected with WClMV encoding GFP. Our results suggest that ClYVV P3N-PIPO is involved in the synergism between ClYVV and WClMV during pea infection through an unknown mechanism different from suppression of RNA silencing

    Matching Residential Aged Care Terms to SNOMED CT, ICNP2Beta, and CATCH

    This paper provides a brief comparison of selected classifications and terminologies for a subset of items relevant to aged care. 70 terms and phrases of relevance to the Australian residential aged care sector, were sourced. These were matched to three terminologies and classifications by the authors using a five point rating scale. Inter-rater concordance for assigned rating was assessed for three author teams to SNOMED-CT. Results suggest that, allowing for some significant biases in the study, SNOMED CT has fair content coverage as a terminology with a 68% 'hit' rate. Three teams of two authors each concurred in their ratings in a 30% sample of terms for SNOMED CT. The terminology and classification CATCH has scored a 41% 'hit' rate for content coverage. The classification ICNP2Beta has scored a 36% 'hit' rate for content coverage. The study should be repeated with a tighter methodology, a larger term set sample from real free-text aged and community care records, and possibly a broader set of terminologies and classifications. Any conceptual gaps that have shown themselves in this introductory paper could be the focus for further study. An obvious example from this paper are Pastoral Care terms.No Full Tex

    Analysis of tandemly and divergently oriented spinach chloroplast promoters

    Chloroplast genes in higher plants frequently synthesize multiple RNA transcripts. Part of this heterogeneity in RNA is due to posttranscriptional RNA processing events; however, some chloroplast genes such as the β\beta subunit of the ATP synthase (atpB) may contain multiple promoters. Ba131 deletion analyses have determined that 3 out of 4 of the previously observed spinach atpB 5\sp\prime ends represent transcription initiation sites and not processing sites. A previously undetected transcript situated one codon 3\sp\prime to the translation initiation site was also identified.A direct assay for chloroplast in vitro transcription was developed using the strong factor-independent transcription terminator from the threonine attenuator (thra) of the threonine biosynthetic operon in Escherichia coli. Factor-independent transcription terminators in prokaryotes contain GC-rich regions of dyad symmetry followed by consecutive thymidines. A second prokaryotic transcription terminator that is efficiently recognated by the chloroplast RNA polymerase was identified, the terminator from the histidine attenuator (hisa) from Salmonella typhimurium. Both thra and hisa will stop transcription when present in either orientation 3\sp\prime to the ribolose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (rbcL) promoter.Genes in the chloroplast are closely spaced in either tandem, converging or diverging orientation. In order to analyze the closely spaced divergently oriented spinach rbcL and the atpB -455 promoters (this atpB promoter is situated nearest the rbcL promoter), 3 bidirectional transcription plasmids were constructed. These vectors each contained a multiple cloning region flanked by either 2 tandem copies of the thra terminators or by divergently oriented hisa and thra terminators. The divergently oriented rbcL and atpB promoters were inserted into the multiple cloning region of each of these vectors. Simultaneous transcription from both promoters was observed.In order to measure interaction between the rbcL and atpB promoters, deletion mutants were constructed that increased or decreased the intergenic region between the promoters. Fewer RNA transcripts were produced from the mutants that altered the spacing, compared to the wild-type constructions. Therefore, the optimal spacing between the two promoters is the 152 bp region present in the wild-type DNA. Additional mutants were constructed which either removed the rbcL promoter or removed regions of the rbcL gene at the 3\sp\prime end of the promoter. Transcription from the atpB promoter increased substantially when the rbcL promoter was removed. Deletions located 11 bp 5\sp\prime to the -35 region of the atpB promoter did not transcribe this promoter with fidelity; instead, multiple transcripts were produced. These data indicated that the spinach atpB promoter and rbcL promoters interact transcriptionally and that sequences with the intergenic region are necessary for accurate transcription initiation.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:25:06Z (GMT).     Quantitative and Qualitative Involvement of P3N-PIPO in Overcoming Recessive Resistance against Clover yellow vein virus in Pea Carrying cyv1

    In pea carrying cyv1, a recessive gene for resistance to Clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV), ClYVV isolate Cl-no30 was restricted to the initially infected cells, whereas isolate 90-1 Br2 overcame this resistance. We mapped the region responsible for breaking of cyv1-mediated resistance by examining infection of cyv1 pea with chimeric viruses constructed from parts of Cl-no30 and 90-1 Br2. The breaking of resistance was attributed to the P3 cistron, which is known to produce two proteins: P3, from the main open reading frame (ORF), and P3N-PIPO, which has the N-terminal part of P3 fused to amino acids encoded by a small open reading frame (ORF) called PIPO in the +2 reading frame. We introduced point mutations that were synonymous with respect to the P3 protein but nonsynonymous with respect to the P3N-PIPO protein, and vice versa, into the chimeric viruses. Infection of plants with these mutant viruses revealed that both P3 and P3N-PIPO were involved in overcoming cyv1-mediated resistance. Moreover, P3N-PIPO quantitatively affected the virulence of Cl-no30 in cyv1 pea. Additional expression in trans of the P3N-PIPO derived from Cl-no30, using White clover mosaic virus as a vector, enabled Cl-no30 to move to systemic leaves in cyv1 pea. Susceptible pea plants infected with chimeric ClYVV possessing the P3 cistron of 90-1 Br2, and which were therefore virulent toward cyv1 pea, accumulated more P3N-PIPO than did those infected with Cl-no30, suggesting that the higher level of P3N-PIPO in infected cells contributed to the breaking of resistance by 90-1 Br2. This is the first report showing that P3N-PIPO is a virulence determinant in plants resistant to a potyvirus

    P3N-PIPO, a Frameshift Product fromP3, Pleiotropically Determines the Virulence of Clover Yellow Vein Virus in both Resistant and Susceptible Peas

    Peas carrying the cyv1 recessive resistance gene are resistant to clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV) isolates No. 30 and 90-1 (Cl-No.30 and Cl-90-1), but can be infected by a derivative of Cl-90-1 (Cl-90-1 Br2). The main determinant for the breaking of cyv1 resistance by Cl-90-1 Br2 is P3N-PIPO produced from the P3 gene via transcriptional slippage, and the higher level of P3N-PIPO produced by Cl-90-1 Br2 than by Cl-No.30 contributes to the breaking. Here we show that P3N-PIPO is also a major virulence determinant in susceptible peas that possess another resistance gene, Cyn1, which does not inhibit systemic infection with ClYVV but causes hypersensitive reaction–like lethal systemic cell death. We previously assumed that the susceptible pea cultivar PI 226564 has a weak allele of Cyn1. Cl-No.30 did not induce cell death but Cl-90-1 Br2 killed the plants. Our results suggest that P3N-PIPO is recognized by Cyn1 and induces cell death. Unexpectedly, heterologously strongly expressed P3N-PIPO of Cl-No.30 appears to be recognized by Cyn1 in PI 226564. P3N-PIPO accumulation from the P3 gene of Cl-No.30 was significantly lower than that from Cl-90-1 Br2 in a Nicotiana benthamiana transient assay. Therefore, Cyn1-mediated cell death also appears to be determined by the level of P3N-PIPO. The more efficiently a ClYVV isolate broke cyv1 resistance, the more it induced cell death systemically (resulting in a loss of environment for virus accumulation) in susceptible peas carrying Cyn1, suggesting that antagonistic pleiotropy of P3N-PIPO controls the resistance breaking of ClYVV
