    Artificial intelligence in global retail service : A Finnish Perspective

    Artificial Intelligence is a broad topic which encompasses the applications, software and devices which can perform roles and solve problems in sensible way. With AI, it is possible today with just a voice to issue command to a computer device to perform certain functions and such is done immediately. AI has grown to become a huge part of retail services today. The aim of this thesis was to examine the role of AI in retail service. Since it is difficult to examine at large the role played by AI in global scale, this thesis was focused on the topic from the Finnish perspective. Finland is one of the pioneers in the use of artificial intelligence and was thus chosen to examine the role which AI played in the retail sector among other sectors of the Finnish economy. The theoretical framework was divided into two sections. In the first section, the role of AI in the operation of three prominent Finnish companies was discussed. These companies are Elisa - a telecommunication giant, OP - a Finnish bank with a huge customer base, and KONE – a Finnish engineering company. In the second part of the theoretical framework, questionnaire was sent to the students of Centria University of Applied Sciences. The aim was to provide an opportunity to examine the success of AI adoption in public services such as transport, to compare the current place of AI in Finnish economy compared to the rest of the world and generally the customers’ experience when they visit a shopping mall. In conclusion, the research showed that AI played a huge role in retail services in Finland. It also showed that AI adoption in retail sector is well developed compared to other countries represented in the survey

    Yoruba Culture and Its Influence on The Development of Modern Popular Music in Nigeria

    This thesis focuses on the contributions of the Yorùbá culture to the development of modern Nigerian popular music. It traces the origin, conception and growth of popular music styles in Nigeria and highlights the underlying Yorùbá cultural cum linguistic influence that nurtured their growth within the urban space of Lagos city. It examines how contemporary Nigerian popular music practitioners appropriate the Yorùbá culture in negotiating their musical and national identities and counteract popular music homogenization through the creation of hybrid musical styles and cultures. The work adopts a multi-dimensional research approach that involves cultural, musicological, historical, anthropological and socio-linguistical tools. Adopting the participant-observer method with Lagos as the primary fieldwork site, additional data were sourced along with interviews of key informants through bibliographic and discographic methods. The study reveals the importance of Lagos as a major factor that contributed to the development of Nigeria‘s popular music practice as exemplified in genres like jùjú, fújì and afrobeat, and discovers that the Yorùbá language has gradually become the dominant medium through which artists express their musical identity as typified by current mainstream hip hop music. Extending earlier work by scholars such as Barber, Waterman and Euba and recent works in hip hop linguistics by Alim and Omoniyi, the thesis contributes to the growing body of research within popular music through the discipline of ethnomusicology, especially in the emerging area of academic inquiry into indigenous African hip hop culture

    Survey Data on Place Attachment in Core Areas of Nigerian Cities: A case in Oke-Foko, Ibadan

    The dataset relates to data collected from a community, Oke-Foko, in the core area of Ibadan, Nigeria. Oke-Foko community covers Wards 5, 6 and 7 of Ibadan Southwest local government. The dataset was a primary data collected through field survey using quantitative source. The quantitative source involved the use of open-ended and close-ended questionnaires. The questions were measured numerically on an interval scale. It involved variables measuring the socio-economic characteristics of residents, their degree of attachment to their residents, their degree of satisfaction with their housing unit features, housing unit support facilities and neighbourhood features. Their perception about the degree of adequacy of security of lives and properties was also investigated. Furthermore, the presence of home-based enterprise was also investigated. Also, the dimensions of place attachment using variables that measure attachment to homes got from literature on attachment and the predictors of place attachment were investigated. Data on socio-economic data were derived from the residents, represented by 1200 housing unit heads, and they were analysed with descriptive statistical tools such as frequencies and percentages, and were presented using tables and figures. Data on dimensions of place attachment were analysed with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with Varimax rotation method. Categorical regression analysis with optimal scaling was used to analyse the predictors of place attachment. All these data analyses are found in [1]. The dataset could be used to investigate the responses of residents of other core area communities in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan cities. The dataset is derived from the case study of a community in Ibadan, which has all the characteristics of historic core area. Therefore, the results could be generalized to other Yoruba towns. The data could be used to measure Place Attachment in communities in other core areas of Nigeria cities. It is useful for measuring the relationship between Place attachment and satisfaction

    Early detection of non-organic hearing loss using a simple tone-in-noise test

    Early detection of non-organic hearing loss (NOHL) is important in order to ensure appropriate management decisions. One possible audiometric test for achieving this is the tone-in-noise (TIN) test although its current format is not widely applicable and may not optimize accuracy. We sought to investigate a modified TIN test, using narrowband noise, and the influence of different noise levels and alternative approaches to determining the outcome. Seventy-five normalhearing and 8 hearing-impaired subjects were asked to feign or exaggerate a hearing loss. The shift in genuine or exaggerated/feigned thresholds with the introduction of ipsilateral noise was determined. The TIN test was able to accurately separate between genuine and feigned thresholds when using narrowband noise presented at the effective masking level corresponding to the apparent tone threshold and using a ‘fail’ criterion of a repeatable threshold shift of ? 10 dB at one or more frequencies. It also produced similar shifts in exaggerated thresholds. In conclusion, this modified TIN test is a potentially accurate method to rapidly identify unilateral and bilateral NOHL in a wide range on contexts and could be applied to automated audiometry

    Do farmers adopt advice on good pesticide practices? A case study of plant doctor recommended pesticide use in maize and tomato production

    Pesticides are now widely used to manage the recent outbreak of crop pests such as fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, FAW) and Phthorimaea absoluta (syn. Tuta absoluta). However, reports on farmers’ pesticide use practices are often insufficient. Hence, this study aimed to assess how Kenyan maize and tomato farmers’ use of pesticides aligns with plant doctor recommendations. We collected data from 600 randomly selected maize and tomato farmers (clinic users and non-clinic users) using a pre-tested structured questionnaire and key informant interviews with plant doctors and extension officers. Results suggest farmer practices matched plant doctor recommendations in over 80% of clinic users' cases. However, there were significant differences in recommended pesticide use and actual practices between Do farmers adopt advice on good pesticide practices? A case study of plant doctor recommended pesticide use in maize and tomato production plant clinic users and non-plant clinic users. Although plant clinic users were significantly more likely to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while working with pesticides, we observed inadequate PPE use among most farmers. This contributed to reported incidences of dizziness, headaches, and other acute pesticide health symptoms. Occasionally farmer practice does not match plant doctor recommendations due to the high cost of inputs, and lack of money to purchase the recommended inputs. Overall, this study shows that plant clinic participation resulted in more judicious use of pesticides and PPE wearing by farmers. The divergence in views means that there is a need to reconcile farmer actions and ideal situations through seminars, farmer field schools, barazas, and other information dissemination methods

    Return for postnatal check: current situation in a Nigerian tertiary health institution

    Objective: This study aims to determine the current prevalence of postnatal clinic attendance among parturients who delivered in a Nigerian teaching hospital.Methods: A two year review of obstetric record of women who delivered in the hospital from July 2010 to June 2012 and were scheduled to attend Postnatal Clinic was done. The list was cross checked with the postnatal clinic record to know patients who kept their appointment by attending the clinic. A frequency table was generated and data were analyzed.Results: In the first year, out of 1267 women 264 (20.8%) returned for postnatal clinic. During the second year, 1651 women delivered in the hospital while 759 (46.0%) came back for postnatal clinic. Aggregate prevalence of postnatal clinic attendance among the parturients was 35.1%.Conclusion: Most parturients who had hospital delivery do not return for postnatal clinic in our environment.<br/

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
