"Both diligent and secret": the intelligence letters of William Herle

    No full text
PhDThe unpublished letters of William Herle, diplomat and intelligencer to the court of Elizabeth I reveal startling insights into the role of such agents in political affairs. As well as their more obvious content of sensitive information, Herle's letters expose his primary impetus behind the pursuit of intelligence; of the construction and maintenance of a patronage alliance based upon the judicious exchange and release of knowledge at politically sensitive moments. This epistolary aspect of intelligence letters - overlooked by much scholarship - reveals the complex strategies Herle implements to circumvent the disruption of social hierarchy at the moment of counsel, the private transfer of knowledge in a medium often subject to broadcast, and the uncomfortable union of potent intelligence and familiar affect. This dissertation investigates the world of Elizabethan intelligence operations as experienced by William Herle, focusing on the topics of religion, early modern diplomacy, imprisonment, secret communication and patronage relationships based upon intelligence-exchange. The letters are an invaluable resource for scholars of early modern history and sixteenth-century letter writing, documenting the lengths to which a client would go to secure and maintain patronage in this period, encompassing the giving of gifts, the transmitting of books, and the strategic deployment of potent information. Scrutinizing intelligence operations from a social and textual standpoint offers the scholar a wider picture of the agent's position and relation to the political landscape. This dissertation examines Herle's evolving status of common informant, prison spy, diplomatic envoy, and special ambassador, surmounting obstacles of social hierarchy whilst maintaining a marginal, secret status. By identifying the epistolary and social minutiae of Herle's letters, this study relocates the position of the Elizabethan intelligencer, departing from the typical notion of skulking spy and instead positioning the agent directly in contact, both textual and physical, with the political power-base

Deprivation of sleep is known to have multiple negative physiological efects on people’s bodies and minds. Despite the awareness of these harmful efects, previous studies have shown that sleep is poor among hospitalised patients. We utilized an observational design with 343 patients recruited from medical and surgical units in 12 hospitals located in nine Spanish regions. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients were collected. Sleep quality at admission and during hospitalisation was measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Sleep quantity was selfreported by patients in hours and minutes. Mean PSQI score before and during hospitalisation were respectively 8.62± 4.49 and 11.31 ± 4.04. Also, inpatients slept about an hour less during their hospital stay. Lower educational level, sedative medication intake, and multimorbidity was shown to be associated with poorer sleep quality during hospitalisation. A higher level of habitual physical activity has shown to correlate positively with sleep quality in hospital. Our study showed poor sleep quality and quantity of inpatients and a drastic deterioration of sleep in hospital versus at home. These results may be helpful in drawing attention to patients’ sleep in hospitals and encouraging interventions to improve sleep

The annual publication of the students of Gilbert Paterson Middle School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (Volume. 2001-02)pdf1^'ST^ Administrators’Message It is with great pride that we, the administration team at Gilbert Paterson Community School, have served you over the past year. At times the 2001-02 school year has been difficult and at times exciting. But together we have grown as a community to become caring, concerned and compassionate citizens. The events of September 11, 2001 brought a sudden realization that we in Lethbridge do not live in isolation from the rest of the world. In spite of this unrest and uncertainty, there has never been a more favourable time in this great nation of ours. Young Canadians have educational and lifelong opportunities abound. The choices presented can be mind-boggling, as technology has created a limitless boundary to our imagination. Yet, it is reality, which forces us to become strong citizens. Emerson said, “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself’. Young Canadians like yourselves must take the opportunities and advantages you have to work hard and make Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada and the World a community of caring, concerned and compassionate citizens just as you have done at Paterson. Published in Canada Printed in USA 2001 On August 22 & 23, 2001, 22 students and 16 teachers participated in a Leadership Retreat at Gilbert Paterson Community They painted, ate, played games, ate, designed logos, ate, had a fashion show, ate, played ninjas, and got to know each other really well. The Ninjas in the Dark game got pretty crazy according to the stories the next morning. But they sure learned how to have fun and how to be good leaders for the years to come! 2 Leadership Retreat- August 2001 3 Welcome to Grade Nine To kick-off their return to school and their last year at GPCS, the grade 9s were treated to a pancake breakfast cooked and served by the teachers. With Mr. Philpott, Mr. Usman, Mr. Scott and Mr. Smith to pour and flip, what could possibly go wrong? 4 Welcome Back Breakfast 5 Turkey Trot 2001 On October 5, 2001 ,the Grade 8 Leadership class lead students at GPCS in a TURKEY TROT. Both the elementary and middle level students participated in the event that morning. Students were to partner up and then estimate the time it would take them to circle the school yard TWICE. The person(s) who walked, ran, skipped or whatever closest to their estimated time won— YOU GUESSED IT-- a turkey for 6 Halloween 2001 J. M 7 Outdoor Ed 8 Writing on Stone October 10-12,2001 Oct. 10- Mr. Boulet gathered his group outside of GPCS. Along with Mrs. Lysak and Mrs. King, they boarded a bus for Writing-On-Stone with none other than Mr. T. Spackman driving! Did they know what they were in for? Day One:winds calm but cool. Students set up camp in designated areas and then explored while the 3 fierce leaders, Boulet, King and Lysak lunched. One group returned from their explorations to find that a few birds had chewed their way into their food boxes. Sure nice of them to share with the locals!. With snacks in hand to feed Mr. Boulet and themselves, the students were lead on a hike around the park. They saw beautiful hoodoos and land features, cool ancient writings and SNAKES! Yep! Having only heard stories about snakes and slitheries, the group actually saw a rattle snake crawling around in his hole. That night the wind shook the tents while the coyotes howled while they slept. hen are we going —HOME? IIIKnWX. Day Two: windy, rainy, cold- The park officer came by with her bus and took the group on an official tour of the Writing On Stone park. She told stories about the native people who use to live on the land and pointed out the different writings left behind. Once back at the campsite, the group played Capture the Flag and explored the hoodoos nearby. Johnny, however, tried desperately to please his team and ended up with a sprained ankle. Needless to say, he had to get Mr. Boulet to give him a piggy back ride back to the campsite where he was attended to by Nurse Lysak. That night, after roasting marshmallows and singing campfire songs, they fell asleep to the howling of the coyotes and the snoring of their leader, Mr. Boulet......or was it Mrs. Lysak???? Myers High School for 201 3 There is a certain buzz in the air and it is call grad. The streets in town a just a little busier, the restaurants are fuller (who has time to cook?) and you can't book a pedicure anywhere! As a community, we pause our busy lives and prepare to celebrate our young men and women, who are almost ready to embark on a new adventure - adulthood! Completing high school is one of those things that has likely always seemed so far away. Remember when you were little and you couldn't wait for Christmas? It just seemed to take forever until that very special day to make its very special appearance. And then it was there - all the talk about Christmas coming was over, all the waiting and anticipating was done, the celebration was enjoyed by all and a collection of fond memories was tucked away. It seems like graduation is the Christmas of the school world - and it is here! I want to take a few steps forward for a minute and imagine, for you - our grads - the world, brightly and boldly. We realize that there is a certain pressure at this point, to do something. Sometimes pressure is ok - it forces action. At the end of June, you are truly done your final year. The work of the last 12 years, 13 if you attended kindergarten, has been to prepare you for this time. Speaking on behalf of the staff of W.R. Myers, we believe that you are well prepared to pursue your passions and curiousities. With solid preparation, comes choice. Choice is that wonderful opportunity to dream, to plan, to decide, to make mistakes and maybe do it all again. Choice is freedom. Choice is powerful and inspiring. Choice makes you feel alive! Completing your diploma presents you with a sparkling buffet of choices. Have the courage to decide what it is that you want. Have the will to bring your plan to life. Practice gratitude and simply delight in the realization that you are actually doing something that started only as an idea, as a dream, as a vague image of what could be - a faint notion of what it is that you would like to do, if you could choice from a buffet of choices. You are talented people, with kind hearts, a hungry intellect and a desire to leave your mark on this world. I wish that you may always be bold and wise in your pursuits. Principal's HIHHH Address Yesterday, I had the great fortune to attend my son's kindergarten Mother's Day Tea. Wow - what an experience -very cool, very humbling and lovely. My son is 6 next week and almost done his first year of school. I imagine that the parents in the audience today akin to the emotions that the moms felt at the tea yesterday - pride, love, and wonder - where did the time do? The Mom sitting beside me (and you may be in the audience, if you are, hope you don't mind me mentioning your tattoo!) Anyway the tattoo was two lines and it said, " It is not always easy. It is always worth it." How true is that? I promise you, it will not always be easy. You already know that. As a class, as a school, we have been through times were not easy - not easy at all. There is sunshine after the darkest storm. There is hope. And it (we, our presence, our being) is always worth it. Also, at yesterday's Mother's Day Tea, we were presented with a video of our kids' year so far in Kindergarten. I thought I was the biggest sap, but it turns out every mother/parent is a big sap, when it comes to their kids! At the end of the video, this message lingers on the screen - They will find their wings! Let me ask you - my school kids; Do you have your wings? We think you do. This group of 1 000 people, and many not present here in this space and in this moment, know that you have your wings and are ready to stretch, to flex, to arch your wings. May your initial flight just be a short one and within familiar territory, or one into parts unknown, well beyond what you have tried before. Please

The annual publication of the students of W. R. Myers High School Taber, Alberta. (Volume 2007-2008)pdfAnother successful ye,or has come. and passed. Students at Myers have been involved in a wide variety of opportunities from .Athletics to Marine Biology to the Hine Arts. This year we sent two different groups to Seattle, Washington for band and baseball. 7t has been exciting to see our students benefit from the different experiences provided by our staff. Another exciting part of our school year included seeing Myers' students experience so much success academically. This success translates into opportunities for them to pursue their lifelong dreams at employment they desire or colleges and universities that they may choose to attend. 7t is always impressive to see how successful our students are at the endeavors they embark on. Students at our school truly make Myers a wonderful place to be each day. Thank you so much for the journey we have all experienced together this year. 1 3 Marcy La Porte Rene Lavoie Doug Leavitt Coralee Leth Tim Luchanski Christine Lumley Darren Majeran Andrea Makarchuk Josh Martens Stacy Me Clelland Stephanie Mills Terry Moline 4 Twyla Valgardson Ali Vos Dalziel Whipple Kathy Wieve S+off C-eJe-bri+y Look jAHke- T ma Fey (Mrs. Schnoor) Chicken from Survivor (Mr. Gammon) Pavid Schwimmer (Mr. Leawtt) 63our+^ey Anderson Tawev* .Arnold Kaitlyn Aubin docly Babei* ■Rachel Bewett C-ory Bracowief* Dako+ak Bran+ner Camera Shy Jordis Bakoway-Adams ■Hillary BetAnett Amber C-airns Tyrell Caldwell Laura C-ampbell 7 Karly Froeklick Lisa Hroe.se Alegar Cilber+son Derrick Goodrich Troy Halifax Cooper Hal! Immunocompromised patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome: Secondary analysis of the LUNG SAFE database

    No full text
Background: The aim of this study was to describe data on epidemiology, ventilatory management, and outcome of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in immunocompromised patients. Methods: We performed a post hoc analysis on the cohort of immunocompromised patients enrolled in the Large Observational Study to Understand the Global Impact of Severe Acute Respiratory Failure (LUNG SAFE) study. The LUNG SAFE study was an international, prospective study including hypoxemic patients in 459 ICUs from 50 countries across 5 continents. Results: Of 2813 patients with ARDS, 584 (20.8%) were immunocompromised, 38.9% of whom had an unspecified cause. Pneumonia, nonpulmonary sepsis, and noncardiogenic shock were their most common risk factors for ARDS. Hospital mortality was higher in immunocompromised than in immunocompetent patients (52.4% vs 36.2%; p < 0.0001), despite similar severity of ARDS. Decisions regarding limiting life-sustaining measures were significantly more frequent in immunocompromised patients (27.1% vs 18.6%; p < 0.0001). Use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) as first-line treatment was higher in immunocompromised patients (20.9% vs 15.9%; p = 0.0048), and immunodeficiency remained independently associated with the use of NIV after adjustment for confounders. Forty-eight percent of the patients treated with NIV were intubated, and their mortality was not different from that of the patients invasively ventilated ab initio. Conclusions: Immunosuppression is frequent in patients with ARDS, and infections are the main risk factors for ARDS in these immunocompromised patients. Their management differs from that of immunocompetent patients, particularly the greater use of NIV as first-line ventilation strategy. Compared with immunocompetent subjects, they have higher mortality regardless of ARDS severity as well as a higher frequency of limitation of life-sustaining measures. Nonetheless, nearly half of these patients survive to hospital discharge. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02010073. Registered on 12 December 2013
