Neurobiology, Molecular Pathways, and Environmental Influences in Antisocial Traits and Personality Disorders.
No full textPersonality disorders (PDs) are psychiatric conditions characterized by enduring patterns of cognition, emotion, and behaviour that deviate significantly from cultural norms, causing distress or impairment. The aetiology of PDs is complex, involving both genetic and environmental factors. Genetic studies estimate the heritability of PDs at 30% to 60%, implicating genes involved in neurotransmitter regulation, such as those for serotonin transporters and dopamine receptors. Environmental factors, including childhood trauma and chronic stress, interact with genetic predispositions to induce epigenetic modifications like DNA methylation and histone modifications, contributing to PD development.
Neurobiological research has identified structural and functional abnormalities in brain regions related to emotional regulation and social cognition, such as the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and limbic system. These abnormalities are linked to impaired emotion processing and interpersonal functioning in PDs. This review focuses on how environmental factors shape maladaptive behaviours and endophenotypes central to many PDs. It explores the interaction between the Ras-ERK, p38, and mTOR molecular pathways in response to environmental stimuli, and examines the role of oxidative stress and mitochondrial metabolism in these processes.
Also reviewed are various types of PDs and existing animal models that replicate key endophenotypes, highlighting changes in neurotransmitters and neurohormones. Identifying molecular biomarkers can lead to the development of "enviromimetic" drugs, which mimic environmental influences to activate molecular pathways, facilitating targeted, personalized treatments based on the molecular profiles of individuals with PDs. Ultimately, understanding the molecular mechanisms of PDs promises to enhance diagnostic accuracy, prognosis, and therapeutic outcomes for affected individuals
Design and Feasibility of a 30- To 40-Knot Emission-Free Ferry
No full textInternal combustion engine (ICE) emissions cause numerous social, environmental, health, and economic issues, including extreme weather or harm to public health. These effects are also experienced in the Chinese Pearl River Delta, where a high-speed, 200-passenger ferry named the Coastal Cruiser 200 (CC-200) uses ICEs to operate. The CC-200's designer, CoCo Yachts, is interested in the technical and economic feasibility of a zero-emission CC-200 variant to negate its contribution to the total ICE emissions. Investigating this interest is this study's purpose, as no currently-operating zero-emission ferries were identified that, at minimum, sail at 30 knots and carry 200 passengers. To reach the study's conclusions, primary and secondary quantitative data were collected, analyzed, and integrated into a parametric model developed to assess the ferry's technical feasibility. Moreover, this data were used to perform an economic assessment. Results showed that a 200-passenger, 30- to 40-knot, emission-free ferry is technically feasible and may or may not be economically feasible when implementing a battery-, compressed hydrogen-, or liquid hydrogen energy carrier system, hydrofoils, and all identified weight-saving measures. It was concluded that for these configurations, the 30-knot, battery-powered hydrofoil ferry has the highest likelihood of being both technically and economically feasible.Marine Technology | Ship Desig

No full textCelem niniejszego komunikatu jest przedstawienie działalności Akademickiego Chóru Studenckiego Uniwersytetu Stefana Batorego w Wilnie, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jego rozwoju i trudności, z jakimi borykał się w latach 1924-1938. Tekst dostarcza więcej szczegółów dotyczących chóru, odnalezionych głównie w archiwach niedostępnych dla Marii Ankudowicz-Bieńkowskiej, autorki monografii Polskie życie muzyczne w Wilnie lat II Rzeczypospolitej, wydanej w Olsztynie w 1997 r., oraz artykułu Środowisko muzyczne USB, w: Wilno i świat. Dzieje środowiska intelektualnego, t. II (Białystok 2002). Przez cały okres swojego istnienia Akademicki Chór Studencki Uniwersytetu Stefana Batorego borykał się z malejącą liczbą członków i trudnościami finansowymi, spowodowanymi utratą kontaktu z chórem przez niektórych śpiewaków po ukończeniu studiów. Niemniej jednak, pomimo stosunkowo skromnego potencjału, chór występował podczas najważniejszych wydarzeń w roku akademickim.The aim of this text is to present the activities of the Academic Student Choir of Stephen Báthory University in Vilnius, with the primary focus on its development and the difficulties it faced in the years 1924–38. The text supplies more details concerning the choir, found mainly in archives that were not available to Maria Ankudowicz-Bieńkowska, author of the monograph Polskie życie muzyczne w Wilnie lat II Rzeczypospolitej [Polish musical life in Vilnius during the inter-war period], published in Olsztyn in 1997, and the article ‘Środowisko muzyczne USB’ [The musical environment at Stephen Báthory University], in Wilno i świat. Dzieje środowiska intelektualnego [Vilnius and the world. The history of an intellectual environment], vol. ii (Białystok, 2002). Throughout the entire period of its existence, the Academic Student Choir of Stephen Báthory University struggled with dwindling membership and financial difficulties, caused by some singers losing touch with the choir after graduating from the university. Nevertheless, despite its relatively modest potential, the choir performed during the most important events in the academic year

Kontynuacja naukowej, krytycznej edycji „Pism rozproszonych” Zygmunta Glogera: edycja rękopisów, pism etnograficznych, rysunków i korespondencji w siedmiu tomach.Zygmunt Gloger (1845–1910) was one of the main creators of the 19th century Polish culture. He was a publicist, historian, archaeologist, ethnographer, folklorist, as well as a poet, literature theoretician, and linguist. In a manner characteristic for the 19th century, his work combined the passion for science with the skills of a stylist of excellent wordsmithery that he also used for polemic purposes. One of his main achievements in the Polish and Central European culture is the Encyklopedia staropolska ilustrowana (the Old-Poland Illustrated Encyclopaedia) (vol. 1-4, 1900-1903) that contributed a vast amount of knowledge to the history of the Republic of Poland, the Great Duchy of Lithuania, and the areas that currently form the territories of Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, and the Baltic States. Gloger was the author of over one thousand academic and popular science articles, several volumes of ethnographic and historic publications, as well as a book that is considered to be a classic example of travel writing in Polish literature: Dolinami rzek. Opisy podróży wzdłuż Niemna, Wisły, Bugu i Biebrzy (River Valleys. Journeys along the Neman, Vistula, Bug, and Biebrza Rivers) (1903). In the years 2018 – 2022 Książnica Podlaska of Łukasz Górnicki in Białystok, in co-operation with the Department of Philological Studies “East-West” of the Białystok University realised a research project financed from the funds of the National Programme for the Development of Humanities of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Poland, entitled: The continuation of an academic, critical edition of the “Scattered Works” by Zygmunt Gloger: an edition of manuscripts, ethnographic works, drawings, and letters in seven volumes. As part of this project, on the 20-21 of November 2019, the Książnica Podlaska of Łukasz Górnicki organised the 2nd International Academic Conference “Naukowe i literackie światy Zygmunta Glogera. Piśmiennictwo – historia – etnografia – ethos ziemiański – język” (The scientific and Literary Worlds of Zygmunt Gloger. Writing – History – Ethnography – Ethos of the Gentry – Language”. The present publication contains 24 academic papers that were presented as speeches during the conference. The project of the NPDH and the conference are a continuation of the scientific project that was realised by Książnica Podlaska of Łukasz Górnicki and the Department of Philological Studies “East – West” of the Białystok University in the years 2014 – 2018, which was financed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. This project resulted in the publication of a three-volume critical edition of the Scattered Works by Zygmunt Gloger (edited by Jan Leończuk, Jarosław Ławski, Vol.1–3, Białystok 2015–2017) that presents the whole publicist heritage of the author of the Old Poland Illustrated Encyclopaedia. On the other hand, the 1st academic conference on Zygmunt Gloger organised in Białystok on the 23-24 of October 2015, resulted in the publication of the monograph by several authors, entitled Zygmunt Gloger. Pisarz, myśliciel, uczony. Studia w 170. rocznicę urodzin, (Zygmunt Gloger. A Writer, Philosopher, and Scientist. Studies on the 170th Birth Anniversary), edited by: Jan Leończuk, Jarosław Ławski, Łukasz Zabielski, Białystok 2016. This volume presents the results of research that show: the position of Gloger in Polish culture, the reception of his works in Belarussian, Ukrainian, and Lithuanian literature, the complex issue of his debut, his letters, opinions about the idea of independence, language, and folk songs, his attitude towards science (numismatics, ethnomusicology, history, and anthropology), and, finally, his social contribution and relationships with other important persons of his times. The presented studies are another attempt at redefining the perception of Gloger not only as an ethnographer, historian and populariser of 19th-century science, but also as a professional writer, publicist, and, secondly, a reliable scientist who knew and used the methodological standards of his era well. Simulation and forecast of coastal erosion in the Gulf of Gdańsk in the SWAN model
No full textThe increasing climatic changes and their possible negative impact on the marine and coastal environment prompt the search for alternative estimating and predicting dangerous phenomena. Hydrodynamic modeling is an underappreciated model which enables forecasting waves and their effects. In the presented work, the author assessed the influence of the dynamics of undulations on the morphological changes of the Gulf of Gdańsk coast in three transects representing different geomorphological zones of the shore. Using the SWAN wave model, simulations were carried out reflecting the hydrodynamic conditions of the most giant storms in 2015-2020, calculating the amount of eroded sediment material in bottom and suspension transport. In addition, based on the significant wave height data from ERA5-ECMWFfrom 1981-2020 and the assumed scenarios, a prediction was made of a potential increase in coastal erosion caused by the rise in the mean value of the significant wave height. Taking into account the implemented and set atmospheric, hydrodynamic, and sedimentological conditions, it has been estimated that the highest erosion characterizes the cliff area in Gdynia-Orłowo (transect B), where the average amount of erosion of the bottom sediment is 0.5 kg/m/s, of the sediment in suspension - 20 kg/m/s, and the average speed of the transported sediment exceeds 2 m s-1. The lowest dynamics of changes is characteristic for the western part of the Vistula Spit (transect C), where the average velocity of the transported sediment is 0.28 m s-1, and the average size of the eroded bottom sediment is 0.014kg/m/sand 0.15kg in suspension/m/s. In the analyzed storm events, at all locations, the greatest erosion was generated by the wave conditions from January 2019. The maximum wave height in the open sea was record-breaking, over 13 meters. Depending on the analyzed area and its geomorphology and exposure to storm waves, the predicted amount of erosion varied significantly. For Scenario A, assuming a 15% increase in the average frequency and height of the significant wave, the forecast of coastal transport is 138-161 thousand m3/year, for Scenario B (30%) 150-175.5 thousand m3/year, and for Scenario C (50%) 180-210 thousand m3/year. In addition, the aim of the work is a cause-and-effect analysis of wave activity on the coast of the Gulf of Gdańsk and the assessment of its impact on quantitative changes in the sediment transport balance
Neurobiology, molecular pathways, and environmental influences in antisocial traits and personality disorders
No full textPersonality disorders (PDs) are psychiatric conditions characterized by enduring patterns of cognition, emotion, and behaviour that deviate significantly from cultural norms, causing distress or impairment. The aetiology of PDs is complex, involving both genetic and environmental factors. Genetic studies estimate the heritability of PDs at 30%–60%, implicating genes involved in neurotransmitter regulation, such as those for serotonin transporters and dopamine receptors. Environmental factors, including childhood trauma and chronic stress, interact with genetic predispositions to induce epigenetic modifications like DNA methylation and histone modifications, contributing to PD development.
Neurobiological research has identified structural and functional abnormalities in brain regions related to emotional regulation and social cognition, such as the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and limbic system. These abnormalities are linked to impaired emotion processing and interpersonal functioning in PDs. This review focuses on how environmental factors shape maladaptive behaviours and endophenotypes central to many PDs. It explores the interaction between the Ras-ERK, p38, and mTOR molecular pathways in response to environmental stimuli, and examines the role of oxidative stress and mitochondrial metabolism in these processes.
Also reviewed are various types of PDs and existing animal models that replicate key endophenotypes, highlighting changes in neurotransmitters and neurohormones. Identifying molecular biomarkers can lead to the development of “enviromimetic” drugs, which mimic environmental influences to activate molecular pathways, facilitating targeted, personalized treatments based on the molecular profiles of individuals with PDs. Ultimately, understanding the molecular mechanisms of PDs promises to enhance diagnostic accuracy, prognosis, and therapeutic outcomes for affected individuals

Abstract
Background. The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays an important role in the cell cycle. There is a correlation between the Wnt/B–catenin signaling pathway and TME. This article reviews methods of inhibiting Wnt Pathway, a useful process in the treatment of various cancers. Compounds of Wnt/β–Catenin Signaling Pathway, such as TCF–1, have an impact on the differentiation and migration of CD8+ T cells. CCL4 expression is regulated by the beta–catenin protein to recruit CD103+ dendritic cells, which enables CD8+ T cell activation. Inhibition of the Wnt/β–catenin pathway has an impact on ovarian cancer patients’ prognosis, reducing the development of ovarian cancer. Research shows that inhibition of the pathway with the use of the LGK974 inhibitor may boost immunity, especially when applied with a Paclitaxel mix. After treatment, expression of the inhibitory receptors CTLA–4, TIM3, PD–1 on CD8+ T cells decreased. The combination of LGK974 and Paclitaxel can cause the death of tumor cells and significantly inhibit their proliferation. The application of dose–dense Paclitaxel avoids toxicity related to the maximum dose needed to protect the patient's immune system by increasing CD8+ TILs. There are concerns regarding toxicity of the LGK 974, especially for cells dependent on the Wnt/β–catenin pathway to maintain homeostasis. Many Wnt/β–catenin pathway inhibitors are tested against colorectal cancer (CRC) with successful results. These include NSAIDs, porcupine inhibitors, tankyrase inhibitors, Wnt5A inhibitors, and disheveled protein inhibitors.The Wnt/β–catenin pathway, when expressed in Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), leads to the transition of epithelial to mesenchymal cells. In early clinical development, there are multiple inhibitors (ex. KYA1797K) targeting the Wnt/β–catenin pathway in TNBC cells, which could become a viable anticancer strategy. Summary. The dependency between the TME and the Wnt/β–catenin pathway plays an important role in cancerogenesis; therefore, these pathways can be a new therapeutic target as antitumor therapy.. A promising positive effect is the use of the LGK974 inhibitor together with Paclitaxel. The usage of phytochemicals such as acetylsalicylic acid, curcumin and resveratrol could become standard clinical procedure alongside conventional anti–cancer agents. These phytochemicals are cheap to manufacture, and their side effects are well–known.
Key message. In the case of breast cancer, any form of influence on the Wnt/β–Catenin pathway may become a prominent factor in forming a sufficient treatment. Recent studies have shown numerous pathway inhibitors and activators, which when combined with conventional treatment may reveal numerous ways of elongating patients lifespan

Autor przedstawia paralelę pomiędzy fotograficznymi zasadami komponowania kadru a architektonicznymi zasadami projektowania. W dalszej części omówione zostały inne umiejętności, takie jak świadome korzystanie z oświetlenia czy cechy charakteru przyszłego architekta, takie jak cierpliwość i kreatywność. Artykuł przybliża również działalność Koła Naukowego „Analog”. Opowiada o wystawie solarografii i współpracy z Muzeum Miasta Łodzi przy tworzeniu odbitek z płytek szklanych oraz wykorzystaniu tradycyjnych technik w ciemni.„Analog” Science Club unites Architecture Students of Łódź University of Technology, who continue black and white analog photography technic. R&D tax incentives versus international tax competition – spatial analysis
No full textPurpose – To examine the existence and strength of the relationship between international tax competition and tax treatment of R&D in spatial analysis. Research method – The research hypothesis implies that the increase in the strength of business ties between economies takes place simultaneously with the disappearance of the differences in the tax treatment of R&D activities. As a measure of spatial differentiation, the trade cooperation indicator was adopted. Meanwhile, as a measure of the disproportions in the tax treatment of R&D, it was assumed that a difference exists in the amount of the B index. The occurrence of the relationship was verified based on the construction of the panel regression models for four scenarios, depending on the size and profitability of enterprises being the potential beneficiaries of tax incentives: large profitable and large unprofitable enterprises as well as profitable and unprofitable SMEs. Results – The analysis conducted enabled the Author to find the negative relationship between the variables in three out of the four scenarios. Therefore, the research hypothesis was rejected.
