Katedra českého jazyka a literaturyObhájenoThe purpose of the seminar paper is to introduce a writer and an adventurer Jiří Zeman. The relevant period for this research was set to 8.3. 2013-31.12. 2014. The author analysed the speeches in terms of structure, length of sentences, figures of speech used, vocabulary, argumentation, manipulative and persuasive techniques and recurring themes. In the end of the paper, the author also compared Czech media's interpretation of the speeches with foreign media's interpretation

Spatial Transformation in Mental Rotation Tasks in Aphantasia

    No full text
Aphantasia refers to the inability to summon images to one’s own mind’s eye, resulting in selective deficits of voluntary object imagery. In the present study, we investigated whether M. X., a case of acquired aphantasia, can still retain some form of spatial transformation processes even though he is unable to subjectively experience voluntary object imagery. M. X. and a group of control participants were asked to complete a letter mental rotation task (MRT), typically used to assess the nature of the spatial transformation, while behavioural and electrophysiological responses were recorded. M. X. was able to complete the MRTs as accurately as controls, showing the pattern of increasing RTs as a function of rotation angle typical of MRTs. However, event-related potentials (ERP) results showed systematic differences between M. X. and controls. On canonical letter trials, the rotation-related negativity (RRN), an ERP component considered as the psychophysiological correlate of the spatial transformation of mental rotation (MR), was present in both M. X. and controls and similarly modulated by rotation angle. However, no such modulation was observed for M. X. on mirror-reversed letter trials. These findings suggest that, at least under specific experimental conditions, the inability to create a depictive representation of the stimuli does not prevent the engagement of spatial transformation in aphantasia. However, the ability to apply spatial transformation varies with tasks and might be accounted for by the specific type of mental representation that can be accessed

    On Memory

    No full text
On Memory is a collaboration between a composer (Whalley), a neurologist (Zeman) and an author (McCall Smith). Explored through music, science and poetry; each movement tackles a different aspect of memory. How are memories formed? What is the power of forgetting, as well as remembering? What part does music play in our autobiographical memory? After an interval, this is followed with a discussion with the authors led and chaired by Professor Catherine Loveday, digging deeper into the special relationship that music has with memory and our sense of self. YouTube videos show the performance at Kings Place, and the discussion

‘Bombik’s Secret Mission’: A Therapeutic Story and Its Musical Adaptation

    No full text
The author approaches the topic of interdisciplinary studies in the Institute of Music at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music at the University of Silesia, located in Cieszyn. The article constitutes a case study of a children’s radio play Bombik’s Secret Mission, written by Bogusław Zeman and adapted by Magdalena Micherda. Therapeutic stories provide assistance in the child’s development process. Thanks to them, the listeners can, for example, learn how to cope with the difficulties of quotidian life. Such choice of worthwhile listening material can be regarded as an investment in their future. Interdisciplinary classes, which combine various fields of study, including literature, pedagogy, theater and music, constitute an important part of a comprehensive curriculum for the students

The syndrome of transient epileptic amnesia

    No full text
Objective: transient amnesia can be the principal manifestation of epilepsy. This diagnosis, however, is seldom suspected by clinicians and remains controversial. The amnestic attacks are often associated with persistent memory complaints. This study was designed to provide the first description of transient epileptic amnesia in a substantial series of patients. Methods: fifty patients were recruited over 18 months using the following diagnostic criteria: (1) recurrent, witnessed episodes of amnesia; (2) other cognitive functions intact during attacks; and (3) compelling evidence of epilepsy. We assessed clinical features and performed neuropsychological evaluation in cases and 24 matched control subjects. Results: transient epileptic amnesia develops in later life (mean onset, 62 years). Amnestic episodes are frequent (median, 12/year), brief (median duration, 30-60 minutes), and often occur on waking (37/50 cases). Epilepsy was the initial specialist diagnosis in only 12 of 50 cases. Attacks ceased on anticonvulsant medication in 44 of 47 treated patients. A total of 40 of 50 cases described persistent memory difficulties. Despite normal performance on standard memory tests, patients exhibited accelerated forgetting of verbal and visual material over 3 weeks by comparison with matched control subjects (p < 0.001). They also showed loss of autobiographical memories for events extending back over 40 years (p < 0.05).Interpretation: we propose that transient epileptic amnesia is a distinctive epilepsy syndrome, typically misdiagnosed at presentation and associated with accelerated long-term forgetting and autobiographical amnesia. The syndrome is of clinical and theoretic importanc
