ADAM SMITH'S OPTIMISTIC TELEOLOGICAL VIEW OF HISTORY
Adam Smith's four-stage theory provides the framework for his writings on history. The fourth stage is the commercial epoch; the culmination of history in this stage is a key component in the conventional interpretation of Adam Smith as a prophet of commercialism. In two historical case studies Smith shows the capacity of commercial society to regenerate itself. This potent capacity suggests that commercial society is inevitable. At a certain point in time it also overcomes the major obstacles to its permanence. Smith's philosophy of history anticipates the end of history views of Kant and Hegel.Political Economy,

"Imperium” in thought of Niall Ferguson
Niall Ferguson is one of the most known British historians, who analyses the history
of empires – with particularly the Roman empire and British. In his numerous articles
and books, he reflect and compose the perception of empire and also he is creator of conception " liberal empire ”. Describing great empires of world, both hard and soft sources of power, he warns Imperium Americanum before commited mistakes its predecessors and pays back the attention on imperialism – dispace it and true leadership. The Author takes into consideration in his research on nature of empire, not only these power, which they have great territory, military power and economic, but first of all power of influence, values, and also whole culture. The main aim is encouraging different members of international arena to promote universal ideas. It can show that, the measure of imperial power is not only spread on hegemony on territory, but conception of the "liperal empire ” (imperium of good), which does not care of national interest but also, at first takes care about international affairs and leads the Wolrd. Surrounding different actors desire of co-operation, and not the aggression and being the best for every price
Dissolving the Chimera of the ‘Adam Smith Problem’
In The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith set out his influential theory that societies achieve prosperity by securing the freedom of individuals to pursue their own end by the means they choose within a framework of rules of justice. In his earlier work The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Smith developed his thesis about the origins of our moral sentiments and the emergence of rules of justice. The socalled ‘Adam Smith Problem’ concerns the perceived inconsistency between Smith’s defence of selfinterest in the Wealth of Nations and his emphasis of sympathy as the origin of moral sentiments in the earlier work. The existence of the ‘Adam Smith Problem’ has been contested by many writers. The present author provides a number of new arguments to demonstrate the illusory nature of the problem by revisiting the key elements Smith’s moral theory. The author argues that the problem dissolves when the role of justice in providing the conditions of free trade is understood. Smith’s tirade against wealth worship is explained as part of his defence of justice and not a condemnation of wealth accumulation. According to this reading, the Theory of Moral Sentiments is a powerful statement of the moral basis of capitalism.
Inteligencji wieki stare i nowe [Rec. David Adam: Ukryty geniusz. Pigułki na rozum, hakerzy mózgu i sekrety inteligencji]
The book entitled The Genius Within: Smart Pills, Brain Hacks and Adventures in Intelligence written by David Adam may easily be placed among the publications of acclaimed historians and science popularisers, such as Niall Ferguson, Yuval Noah Harari, and Bill Bryson. The author, a chemist by profession, takes the reader on a journey through the historical research on human intelligence. A lot of space in the book is, however, devoted to the presentation of some experiments that the author himself underwent. In the book’s conclusions, drawing of both the past and the present, the author claims that the future belongs to the neuroscience revolution.
ADAM SMITH'S PESSIMISTIC VIEW OF THE FUTURE OF COMMERCIAL SOCIETY: RHETORIC OR REALITY?
Adam Smith is generally viewed as a great optimist about commerce and commercialism. Consistent with this assessment is the conventional view that Smith believed in progress: he had an optimistic view of history. On the other hand, occasionally over the last thirty years commentators, such as Heilbroner, have suggested that Smith actually had a very pessimistic view of history and the prospects of commercial society. Can we explain Smith's apparent inconsistencies? One solution is that Smith "changed his mind" during his lifetime. Another suggestion, proposed by Muller, is that Heilbroner (and others holding similar views) failed to understand Smith's rhetoric. Muller is correct in suggesting that there is exaggeration in some of Smith's pessimistic statements. Nevertheless, Smith's vision has a darker tincture than Muller acknowledges: much of Smith's pessimism about commercial society remains a reality which cannot be neatly explained away as "rhetoric."International Relations/Trade,
Trace Metal Distribution within the Fluvial Levee Samples in the Coeur d'Alene River, Idaho.
Color poster with text, graphs, and map describing research conducted by Brooke Fahrenkrog and Adam Krieger, advised by J. Brian Mahoney, Robert L. Hooper, and Jill W. Ferguson.Extensive lead, silver, and zinc mining in the Coeur d'Alene River Valley, Idaho during the late 1800s-mid 1900s produced mine tailings that were reworked downstream by fluvial processes. This study focuses on oxidized sediments from river levees near Cataldo and Swan Lake.University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
