Adaptable Techniques for Making IT-Related Investment Decisions

    No full text
The author investigated the main methods used for making IT-related investment decisions. In the view of these methods it can be said that no method was found that would help to make investment decisions 'routinelike'. The use of traditional financial indicators – which would be suitable for so-called regular investments - has a lot of obstructions and it would be dangerous to base decisions only on them. Return on Investment (ROI) methods are used in the case of classical investments (buildings, machineries) to analyze capital investments. Their simplest explanation is that net profit is expressed in percentage of invested capital. If it is a planned investment, a quotient is used for comparing variations. Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) has gained upon from the 60’s (in case of several IT-related investments as well), as it made possible to consider certain not quantifiable factors and uncertain elements too, so it meant a great help for choosing between different alternatives. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)-model was created by GartnerGroup in the beginning of the 90’s, which is an excellent method for monitoring IT infrastructure and for analysing direct and indirect costs of possessed and used softwares and hardwares. An another method for making investment decisions, Rapid Economic Justification (REJ) is an attempt made by Microsoft and Intellectual Arbitrage to develop a better-balanced approach for examining and developing IT projects as it had been before. REJ offers the possibility of assessment balance against the cost-models dealing with only the cost side of a project

Temporal expressions in the Book of Psalms of Mikołaj Rej

    No full text
The aim of this article is the characterization of chosen temporal expressions in the Book of Psalms of Mikołaj Rej. The author, who analyses the chosen fragments of the piece in a linguistic and stylistic way, depicts the originality and independence of Rej from Latin sources: the Wulgata and the Campensis in translations of those expressions that concern temporal relations. The author proves that the superior aim of the Rej’s translation piece was on the one hand the revision of Biblical realities and on the other hand the particular care of stylistic translation’s form

Mikołaj Rej a „sprawa litewska” – uwagi Pana z Nagłowic o unii (lubelskiej) i Litwinach

Mikolaj Rej was not only one of the most notable 16th century Polish writers, but also an active member of the parliament. Among others, he worked on the Polish-Lithuanian issues. Based on the governmental documentation, Rej was engaged in these issues from 1542 onwards. He also dedicated a few pieces of writing to the matter, the most important of which is a poem written around 1567 entitled ‘Union with Lithuania’. In the poem he condemned the sluggishness in debating the unification of the two countries, but emphasized that the Lithuanians should have taken a greater interest in the matter, since Poland could have helped their fights with the Eastern neighbours. As he did during the parliamentary sessions, the author also stressed the need for electing a common king.Despite hoping for a quick resolution and unification, Rej did not regard Lithuania as an equal parter for Poland. Based on a few poets, the author seems to think of the Lithuanians as of a backward  nation (e.g. their table manners during the feasts and the use of primitive language). It is worth noting that Rej treated the Lithuanian aristocracy differently. While describing the clans and noble families (e.g. the Radziwiłł family or the Chodkiewicz family), he emphasised their patriotism and bravery. Rej’s remarks on the Lithuanians and the union did not stand out from the common opinion at the time. They could represent the feelings of a typical member of the Polish gentry

    No full text
In 1905 was publshed a biographical nowel written by Adolf Nowaczyński entitled Portrait of Mikołaj Rej from Nagłowice. While the novel was being written, there were not enough comprehensive and reliable materials about Rej’s life. The purpose of this work is to show pieces of work which were used by Nowaczyński in his novel. Only thanks to searching analysis of those hypothetical available materials the author could manage to establish sources of the hero’s creation. We are sure to say that while writing a novel about Rej, Nowaczyński took some pieces information from Andrzej Trzecieski’s biograhy from the XVI century and Zbigniew n‘aziohtcki’s biography from the XIX century. We can suppose that the author of the Crcation knew the results of Beicikowski’s research.Zadanie pt. „Digitalizacja i udostępnienie w Cyfrowym Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego kolekcji czasopism naukowych wydawanych przez Uniwersytet Łódzki” nr 885/P-DUN/2014 zostało dofinansowane ze środków MNiSW w ramach działalności upowszechniającej nauk

Evaluative vocabulary on image of an evil man in "David’s Psalter" by Mikołaj Rej

    No full text
The article deals with evaluative vocabulary in the religious language in 16th century. The analysis focuses on the evaluative lexicon used by Rej to form an image of anevil man in David’s Psalter. The paraphrase used by Rej is rich with varied evaluativeexpressions in respect of the evil man, mainly adjectival elements. It is clearly visiblewhen compared to earlier medieval translations based on the verbal method of translatingwhich follow the Latin linguistic model which is not diverse. What attracts attention is notonly a big number of forms, but also the autonomy of the author’s lexical choices whichtestifies to the author’s free creation of a stereotypical idea of an evil man, to breakingwith the Latin shape of Wulgata and to a search of one’s own way of the art of translation.A tendency to avoid repetitions and to care for the synonymic diversity of the epithets haspaved a way in David’s Psalter for rare lexemes unknown to the literary language and formorphological doubles and lexemes formed with the use of rare formants. The materialanalysed has shown Rej as an artist who creates the text of his translation without anyrestraints and who applies synonymy as an important tool used to shade the meaning

The tinged words of wiseacres : Mikołaj Rej on art of embellishing words

    No full text
The main purpose of the paper is to discuss Mikołaj Rej’s critic of rhetoric reduced to the art of embellishing words in his famous parenetical work The Image of a Good Man’s Life (Krakow 1567-68). Using the metaphor “the tinged words”, Renaissance author revoked well-know figure “colors of rhetoric” (colores rhetorici) in the context of contemporary sophists who were masters in multiplication of linguistic ornaments. For Rej, the simplicity of language (correlated in the light of the Good News with a Christian life) was the main condition of truth and truthfulness. Thus, the major rule of his rhetoric might be epitomized in two Latin words: sola veritas (‘only truth’)

Mikołaj Rej and his “Kupiec” and Religious Topics on the Polish Stage

The present paper focuses on the Polish religious polemic during the first phase of the Reformation period. Today we know only a few plays from this period. Fortunately, they do allow us, nevertheless, to analyse the main topic and to reconstruct their hypothetical staging. The present paper focuses on the Polish religious polemic during the first phase of the Reformation period.
