    The research was conducted with the aim of (1) describing the objective structure aspects, (2) describing the value of moral education in the Asma Nadia Pesantren Impian novel. The object in this study is the aspect of objective structure and the value of moral education contained in the novel Pesantren Impian by Asma Nadia. The subject of his research was Asma Nadia's Dream Dream School. The instruments in this study were the researchers themselves, note books, ballpoint pens, and relevant books that could be used as reference material. Data collection techniques used by researchers used library techniques and note-taking techniques, namely by: (1) the researcher reads novel, (2) the author identifies the data, (3) records the results of the data relating to novel. The research method used by the researcher is the description method. The analysis technique used by researchers is the content technique of content analysis authors. The results of this study indicate that (1) the theme found in Asma Nadia's Pesantren Impian novel is the determination and effort of a woman to become a better person after undergoing a rehabilitation period in a pesantren. The main character is Girl, Rini is an additional figure, Teungku Umar, Teungku Hasan, Sinta and Santi. The background is divided into two types, namely the place setting and the time setting. The plot / groove used is a backlight or flash back. The point of view used is the third person's viewpoint of omniscience. (2) the value of moral education, namely respect, compassion and helpfulness

    This research is motivated by the research problem of how the religious values ​​of Islam in the novel Bidadari Whispering by Asma Nadia. In terms of language, storyline, story content. The author interprets the data based on the data analysis conducted on Islamic religious values ​​in the novel Bidadari Berbisik by Asma Nadia. There are 61 data in this study including , 1. Faith (tawhid) found 25 data, 2. Norms of Life (fiqh) found 5 data, 3. Attitude and behavior (morals) found 31 data. The data that is more dominant in the novel Bidadari Whispering by Asma Nadia is behavioral attitudes (morals) as many as 31 data. &nbsp

    Interest Groups, Government Spending and Italian Industrial Growth (1876-1913)

    In the last two decades of the XIX century the Italian model of economic growth shifted from agricultural to industrial. Historians maintain that this process was affected by the action of some interest groups that pursued both state protection from competition and specific public expenditure programs. Starting from the economic literature of interest groups, this paper attempts to empirically investigate the role of the interest groups in public expenditure decisions in Italy from 1876 to 1913. We argue that a proper indicator of the role of interest groups is their output. The analysis suggests that government spending was sensitive to the preferences of heavy industry rather then those of textile and cereal cultivators. We therefore highlight the role of the political process in setting economic policy at the early stages of the Italian development.industrialization; special interests groups; public expenditure, Italian economic history.

    Concerto for Cello and Orchestra and a Comparative Study of the Pedagogical Methods of Nadia Boulanger and Dr. Dinos Constantinides

    The first part of this dissertation is an original music composition for orchestra entitled, Concerto for Cello and Orchestra. In studying the life of pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim (November 15, 1942-), I discovered a recording of his beautiful and gifted wife Jacqueline Mary Du Pré, (January 26, 1945 – October 19, 1987) performing Edward Elgar\u27s Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85. This experience was the beginning of a love triangle between Elgar, Barenboim, and Du Pré. An attraction to Jacqueline goes deeper than just the music and the cello. Her career was not long due to multiple sclerosis which forced her to stop performing at the age of twenty-eight. Barbara (my wife) was afflicted with this crippling disease, and our relationship began with both of us being musicians (Trumpet and French horn). The second part of the dissertation is a comparative study of the pedagogical methods of Nadia Boulanger and Dr. Dinos Constantinides. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction of Nadia Boulanger and Dinos Constantinides in a biographical sketch. Chapter 2 uncovers the teaching of Nadia Boulanger and her connection to young successful American composers. Chapter 3 is an eyewitness account of the teaching of Dr. Dinos Constantinides by the author of this document. Chapter 4 shows a comparison of similarities and differences between the teaching of Nadia Boulanger and Dr. Dinos Constantinides. Chapter 5 is a summary and conclusion of the pedagogical methods of Nadia Boulanger and Dr. Dinos Constantinides

    Family, in a psycho-social perspective, can be considered challenged in epistemic sense: by its nature it is compared with the contexts of change, with the ability to adapt to life events that are varied and numerous. The family may be regarded as a "project" that turns to unify different situations, sometimes contradictory, going to define family "paths" increasingly differentiated and difficult to predict. These pathways may be dependent on life events not selected that people suffer all the consequences, or from events strongly desired that bring people to possible happiness or unhappiness. The author outlines a scenario that includes the varied strategies of coexistence in which family meanings can be very different; along with a “liquid” love and society, the family no longer seems able to hold its form. The construction of its boundaries and relevant meanings, through the current multiplicity of family forms which each of us can experience simultaneously, is the main challenge relates to the ability of each to build and maintain links

    L’elaborato di tesi proposto si incentra sullo studio del processo traduttivo adottato dall’autore russo Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) per la propria produzione letteraria in versi. Più noto per la sua prosa, Nabokov fu anche poeta e traduttore di testi altrui e propri, attività queste che il presente studio intende riportare all’attenzione del lettore. L’elaborato è stato composto in lingua inglese per rendere l’analisi testuale più efficace, evitando di appesantire ulteriormente la comparazione con il tramite, probabilmente ingombrante, di una terza lingua. Autore “extraterritoriale,” Nabokov condensa nella propria audace pratica autotraduttiva l’interesse per la mediazione interlinguistica e il cammino spericolatamente funambolico tra cultura russa e occidentale. Muovendo da Poems and Problems, testo rimasto all’ombra di altri ben più noti suoi capolavori, il presente lavoro di analisi affronta lo studio della traduzione che Nabokov ha realizzato, nel corso della sua lunga carriera letteraria, dei propri componimenti poetici dal russo all’inglese, ampliando la trattazione ad altri suoi testi, inseriti opportunamente nel più ampio contesto della letteratura russa, di cui costantemente lo scrittore si nutre. Individuati il criterio retorico e il metodo della close reading, entrambi radicati nell’analisi letteraria di stampo formalista e illustrati nell’Introduzione nonché nella prima analisi testuale dedicata ai versi di Dožd’ proletel / The Rain Has Flown, si procede attraverso i quattro capitoli incentrati sullo studio di specifiche figure retoriche quali strumenti di composizione poetica originale e coordinate del processo autotraduttivo. Nel primo capitolo, Inače govorja / In Other Words, viene discusso l’espediente letterario dell’intertestualità in forma citazionale ed ecfrastica come motivo di radicamento nella tradizione di appartenenza e germinazione di nuovi orizzonti interpretativi. È questo il caso di Ešče bezmolvstvuju / I Still Keep Mute, di tjutčeviana memoria. In L’Inconnue de la Seine è invece la descrizione di un comune oggetto decorativo a fornire il pretesto per la rilettura di Aleksandr Blok, mentre Snimok / Snapshot riflette sul concetto di speculazione in quanto approccio gnoseologico. Il secondo capitolo, Prozračnye vešči / Transparent Things, analizza l’uso dei metasememi e, più in particolare, di sinestesia e sineddoche quali meccanismi di apertura verso bispazialità e anticonvenzionalismo. Tikhij šum / Soft Sound sfrutta lo spostamento sinestetico per rievocare la sensazione di disorientamento causata dall’emigrazione. L’occhio sineddochicamente isolato di Oko / Oculus offre spunti di riflessione sul punto di vista, anche in ambito narrativo. Con la sua combinazione di parzialità e sintesi, Nepravil’nye jamby / Irregular Iambics propone invece un più maturo studio, in nuce, della materia prosodica. Nell’Interludio l’eccentricità del Bezumec / The Madman funge da tramite tra la prima parte, dedicata alla visione tetica e all’approccio costruttivo del pensiero di Vladimir Nabokov, e la seconda, incentrata piuttosto sulla concezione antitetica del reale e votata dunque allo sconfinamento oltre i limiti della logica e del logos stesso. Nel presente capitolo si propone inoltre il concetto di inter-trope, consistente in una figura retorica interstiziale generata a partire dal confronto contestuale di source e target text. In S drugoj storony / Then Again si procede all’analisi dei metalogismi tramite i quali Nabokov delinea lo spazio straniante del potustoronnost’, distillato della propria esperienza esilica e del proprio ibridismo linguistico-culturale. Antitesi e ambiguità polisemica caratterizzano rispettivamente Nomer v gostinice / Hotel Room e Formula / The Formula, entrambi incentrati sull’esperienza della trasfigurazione, ulteriormente esplorata in K Kn. S. M. Kačurinu / To Prince S. M. Kachurin, in cui lo straniamento, da motivo tematico, affiora anche alla superficie semantica del testo. Nell’ultimo capitolo, Molchi / Speak Not, si considera l’uso della reticenza quale mezzo di superamento dei confini imposti dalla parola comune e dalle convenzioni linguistiche. Le silenti allusioni e il finale inconcluso di Neokončennyy černovik / An Unfinished Draft sono veicolo espressivo della voce nabokoviana nel contesto del dibattito letterario interno alla diaspora russa del Novecento. In Kakoe sdelal ja durnoe delo / What Is the Evil Deed Nabokov torna al suo noto Lolita, pur non menzionandolo nel corpo del testo e affidando al podtekst di Boris Pasternak la responsabilità dei propri intenti. O praviteljakh / On Rulers, infine, contraddice la presunta indole apolitica di Nabokov mediante una scrittura parodica che consegna al lettore attento gli strumenti necessari per colmare le assenze di cui sono disseminati i versi. Con la lettura di Slava / Fame si giunge alle dovute conclusioni, rintracciando i motivi e gli strumenti retorici ricorrenti nei versi di Nabokov e notando il potenziamento o viceversa l’indebolimento che gli stessi subiscono in fase autotraduttiva. Una fugace menzione, in appendice, della Linguistica computazionale rivolge un invito al lettore contemporaneo a fidarsi del testo, che è, al di là di ogni progresso e tecnologia, fonte prima e ultima di significato.The proposed dissertation analyses Russian author Vladimir Nabokov’s (1899-1977) translation process as applied to his verses. Widely recognised as a novelist, Nabokov was also a poet and a translator of other writers’ literary production as well as his own, which the present work aims to put into a fresh perspective. In order to facilitate the analytic approach, the dissertation has been written in English, avoiding any further, and probably redundant, mediation through the Italian language. An “extraterritorial” writer, Nabokov condenses in his daring self-translating practice his interest in interlinguistic mediation and his audacious funambulism on the verge between Russian and Western cultures. Moving from Poems and Problems, a book that still remains in the shadow of his most well-known masterpieces, the present analysis explores Nabokov’s translations of his own verses from Russian into English during the course of his long and fruitful literary career, gradually extending to some of his other works and contextualising his production into the broader context of Russian literature, which constantly nourished Nabokov’s output. The rhetorical approach and the close reading method, both deeply rooted in the Formalist school, are illustrated in the Introduction as well as through the first textual analysis, centred on Dozhd’ proletel / The Rain Has Flown. The core of the dissertation is divided in four chapters, each dedicated to the study of a certain rhetorical figure as a tool used by the author to compose his verses and the vector of the self-translating process. The first chapter, Inache govorya / In Other Words, discusses intertextuality through direct quotations and ekphrasis, which allow Nabokov to align his poetry with the Russian tradition while delving into new interpretive perspectives. Such is the case of Eshche bezmolvstvuyu / I Still Keep Mute, inspired by Fedor Tyutchev. In L’Inconnue de la Seine the description of a decorative object constitutes the pretext for a re-reading of Aleksandr Blok, while Snimok / Snapshot ponders on the concept of speculation in terms of gnoseologic approach. The second chapter, Prozrachnyye veshchi / Transparent Things, considers the use of metasememes, specifically synaesthesia and synecdoche, as portals onto bispatsial’nost’ and nonconformism. In Tikhiy shum / Soft Sound the synaesthetic shift is used to recreate the disorientation experienced in emigration. The synecdochic eye in Oko / Oculus invites the reader to consider the point of view, also in the narrative sense. With its combination of partiality and synthesis, Nepravil’nyye yamby / Irregular Iambics encapsulates a more mature study, albeit in nuce, of the prosodic matter. The eccentricity of Bezumets / The Madman in the Interlude guides the reader from Vladimir Nabokov’s thetic vision and constructive approach, as described in the first part, to his antithetic idea of reality and the trespassing of logic and logos, as discussed in the second part. The aforementioned chapter advances the definition of inter-tropes, interstitial rhetorical figures stemming from the contextual comparison of source and target text. S drugoy storony / Then Again analyses metalogisms, through which Nabokov delineates the estranging space of potustoronnost’ epitomising his exilic experience as well as his linguistic and cultural hybridism. Antithesis and polysemic ambiguity characterise Nomer v gostinitse / Hotel Room and Formula / The Formula respectively, both investigating the experience of transfiguration. In K Kn. S. M. Kachurinu / To Prince S. M. Kachurin the motif of estrangement reverberates through the semantic elements of the text. The last chapter, Molchi / Speak Not, considers Nabokov’s use of reticence as a tool to overcome the limits imposed by linguistic conventions and common words. The silent allusions and the open ending of Neokonchennyy chernovik / An Unfinished Draft incarnate the author’s opinion in the debate within the Russian XX century diaspora. In Kakoye sdelal ya durnoye delo / What Is the Evil Deed Nabokov goes back to his Lolita without ever mentioning it throughout the poem and entrusting the podtekst inspired by Boris Pasternak with his own intentions. Ultimately the parodic tone of O pravitelyakh / On Rulers contradicts the alleged non-politic nature of Nabokov’s literary work and gives the attentive reader the chance to fill in the absences of its verses. With the analysis of Slava / Fame some conclusions are drawn: recurrent motives and tropes are considered, also in terms of how they might be enhanced or weakened by the self-translating process. A brief mention of Corpus Linguistics encourages the contemporary reader to trust the text, which is, beyond any progress and technology, the primary and ultimate source of meaning

    Mademoiselle and the Boulangerie: Nadia Boulanger's lasting influence on American choral music

    Throughout her career, Nadia Boulanger's unique ability to guide and instruct young musicians as well as veterans drew attention to her work as a pedagogue and notoriety to her name. She mentored some of the most influential twentieth century American composers, thereby helping shape the course of American musical history and define the sound that would represent the nation. This project will examine Boulanger's contribution to the development of American choral music as teacher and mentor. Beginning with one of her first American students, Aaron Copland, and concluding with her last American student, David Conte, the author will examine Boulanger's influence through selected works from several of her most notable students. This report will present brief biographical sketches of each composer, examining the impact their relationships with Boulanger had upon their art and how she helped give birth to the sound that would come to define a nation

    Situada numa Cuba pós-revolução, a obra de Wendy Guerra configura-se como um grande palimpsesto, um espaço fragmentado que se constitui a partir de um jogo entre memórias pessoais e fatos históricos, inclusive nomes verídicos da luta revolucionária cubana, mesclados a elementos e personagens da cultura cubana e internacional da época – trechos de poemas, de músicas, de livros, e até de supostos diários, os quais, através da trama ficcional, ganham voz e força de autenticidade. Através de seu alter ego, a autora-personagem-narradora,Nadia Guerra, se autodenomina uma “filha da pátria”, lutando por resgatar a própria identidade diluída em uma memória que se constitui, desconstitui e se reconstitui a partir de restos de memórias pessoais e coletivas, entre o passado e o presente de uma nação cuja representação ganha dimensões corpóreas: Nadia não apenas carrega suas memórias no próprio corpo, mas também as vê refletidas no corpo do Outro, fazendo da história seu cenário principal, ao mesmo tempo em que faz da memória subjetiva um espelho desvelador da sociedade, marcado sobretudo pelas opacidades do esquecimento e/ou da interdição. Sendo assim, optando por uma abordagem comparatista, e tendo como referencial teórico as obras de Paul Ricoeur, Jacques Le Goff e Michel Maffesoli, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar o espaço da memória e do imaginário e sua inter-relação com a História na constituição da identidade de Nadia Guerra, entendida pelo vestígios da autora no texto, como seu alter ego.                                               Palavras-chave: Literatura. Cuba. ABSTRACT Located in a post revolution Cuba, the work by Wendy Guerrastands as a great palimpsest, a fragmented space intertwined by personal memories, historical facts – including true names from Cuban revolutionary army –, all threaded by elements and characters from Cuban culture of that time, such as fragments of poems, music, books, and even supposed diaries, which through the fictional construction gain voice and force of authenticity. Through her alter ego, the author-character-narrator, Nadia Guerra, defines herself as a “Nation’s daughter”, and struggles to rescue her own identity, diluted into a memory which constitutes, de-constitutes and reconstitutes itself through fragments of personal and collective memories, between past and present of a nation whose representation acquires corporeal dimensions: Nadia does not only carry her memories in her own body but also sees them reflected on the body of Others, turning history into her main scenario, turning at the same time subjective memory into a society’s unveiling mirror, marked mainly by the opacities of oblivion and/or interdiction. Therefore, from a comparative approach and having as theoretical reference the works by Paul Ricoeur, Jacques Le Goff and Michel Maffesoli, the aim of this paperis to analyze the space of memory and imaginary and its relation to history in the constitution of Nadia Guerra’s identity, understood as traces of the author’s presence in the text, as her alter ego. Keywords: Literature.
