The reviewing article is dedicated to the monograph by Łukasz Smorczewski, Administracja diecezji Pontu w późnym Cesarstwie Rzymskim, Poznań 2019, issued as a 2nd volume of the series “Bibliotheca Classica et Byzantina.” The book by Smorczewski describes the history of Pontus dioecesis in the late Roman Empire from its creation at the beginning of the 4th century till the emergence of a thematic system. The author discusses the problems of shaping the dioecesis in the 4th century, its internal structure, as well as the competences of the head of this territorial unit: the vicar. The author offers a good description of the scientific discussion of the problems connected to that territorial unit of the Empire. An important part of the Smorczewski\u27s monograph is played by prosopographical studies, placed at the end of this book.Artykuł recenzyjny jest poświęcony monografii Łukasza Smorczewskiego, Administracja diecezji Pontu w późnym Cesarstwie Rzymskim, Poznań 2019 wydanej jako drugi tom serii „Bibliotheca Classica et Byzantina”. N.E. Thing Co. Ltd. and the Institutional Politics of Information 1966–71

    No full text
This paper presents a systematic analysis of concepts of information found in the visual art of the Vancouver-based conceptual company N.E. Thing Co. Ltd. The company’s evolving representations of “Sensitivity Information” are resolved into three distinct overlapping phases that correspond with co-president Iain Baxter’s deepening engagement with Marshall McLuhan’s critical information theory during the turbulent years of 1964 to 1971. The artist’s creative dialogue with information science is situated against the backdrop of an emerging information society in Canada, McLuhan’s discourse on the informationalization of the body and subjectivity, and an intensifying pedagogical crisis at Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Communication and the Arts, where Baxter taught alongside composer R. Murray Schafer,in the period leading up to, and immediately following, the firing of the university’s first president. A comparison of the information art of N.E. Thing Co. Ltd. with Schafer’s informatic writings reveals that the company’s articulation of Sensitivity Information constitutes what we would now recognize as a proto-deconstructionist destabilization of signal/noise binaries derived from Baxter’s fusion of McLuhan with Alan Watts’s popularization of Zen philosophy. </jats:p

“Celebration of the Body”: Marshall McLuhan and the Sensory Conceptualism of the N.E. Thing Co. Ltd.

    No full text
Through a close reading of the 1976 artist’s book and exhibition catalogue “Celebration of the Body,” the N.E. Thing Co. Ltd.’s pioneering representations of the body’s “informationalization” are situated within the conceptual company’s creative reworking of Marshall McLuhan’s sensory media theories. In turn, McLuhan’s thought is located within a genealogy of physiological aesthetics that troubles conventional narratives of Conceptual art as a movement defined by its engagement with theories of cognition, language, and systems. Friedrich Kittler’s analysis of modernism as reflecting the decomposition of the body under a regime of psychophysical experimentation provides the framework for this article’s re-evaluation of the Toronto School theorist and his influence on the foundational Vancouver-based “critical company.”</jats:p

Problem periodyzacji literatury łacińskiej doby cesarstwa rzymskiego (I–II wiek n.e.)

The article deals with the problem of periodization of Latin literature at the time of the Roman Empire, especially in the first two centuries AD. Having assumed the cyclical nature of phenomena in the field of culture and literature, the author proposes to identify three successive historical-literary phases: [a] the early-imperial period (14–68 AD); [b] the Flavian or liberal period (69–117 AD); [c] the archaizing or Frontonian period (117–192 AD). The scrupulous analysis of the epic, lyric and dramatic works, written in Latin in the first and second centuries AD, clearly documents that the individual literary periods stand in clear opposition to the preceding and following phases. They contain dominant trends, current movements and literary phenomena, distinct from the ones which precede and follow. Ten main differences or similarities between the historical-literary periods are carefully presented in three attached tables (Nos. 1–3).Artykuł podejmuje problem periodyzacji literatury rzymskiej doby cesarstwa rzymskiego, skupiając się na dwóch pierwszych wiekach n.e. Autor, zakładając cykliczność zjawisk w dziedzinie kultury i literatury, proponuje wydzielenie trzech faz historycznoliterackich: [a] okres wczesnoimperialny (14–68 n.e.); [b] okres flawiański lub liberalny (69–117 n.e.); [c] okres archaizujący lub frontoniański (117–192 n.e.). Skrupulatna analiza dzieł epickich, lirycznych i dramatycznych, napisanych po łacinie w pierwszym i drugim stuleciu n.e., jasno dokumentuje że wyróżnione okresy literackie stoją w wyraźnej opozycji do faz poprzedzających i po nich następujących. Występują w nich dominujące prądy i zjawiska literackie, odmienne niż w fazie poprzedzającej i bezpośrednio po nich następującej. Trzy załączone tabele prezentują dziesiątkę głównych odrębności lub podobieństw pomiędzy trzema analizowanymi okresami literarckimi

The Diffusion of Bt Cotton and the Economic Impact on Producers

    Get PDF
The objective is to present the economic impact of producers adopting Bt cotton and the rapid diffusion on the main producing countries: USA, China and India. The existing literature about this type of transgenic crop has been revised and the results of different research are presented. Bt cotton varieties have been quickly adopted by the countries in this study. Data show that this technology helps reduce production losses and significantly decrease the use of pesticides, thus saving their cost and the associated labour cost. But the total cost reduction is weak due to the high prices of the seeds incorporating this technology.Innovation diffusion, Bt cotton, Crop Production/Industries,
