Voor 't gewone leven ongeschikt. Een biografie van Clare Lennart

    No full text
Voor ’t gewone leven ongeschikt. A biography of Clare Lennart, is a literary and historical biography of author Clare Lennart (Clara Helena van den Boogaard-Klaver, 1889-1972). Her work contains many recognisably autobiographical elements, especially from her youth. An extensive overview of the life of this 'forgotten author' is the basis for this critical and interpretive biography. In addition it shows Clare Lennart's unique position in her time, the unusual choices she made and ‘the roads not taken’ in her life. The main focus of the research is the question of how Clare Lennart gained an economic position as a woman of letter. A second question focuses on the concepts of posture and self-fashioning. The thesis demonstrates that Clare Lennart was aware of her image as a 'poetic nature lover' and that she openly presented herself as a hack writer. Clare Lennart's poetic style nowadays seems more dated than the sober language used by contemporary authors. Nevertheless, she had a large audience between 1945 and 1972 and the reception was nearly always positive. The biography discusses the contemporary reception of her work in detail and why Clare Lennart's work is omitted from the Dutch canon, using the concept of ‘middle-brow’ literature.Modern and Contemporary Studie

The Cat Blows in the Silver Horn… On Lennart Hellsing’s Poetry, and Its Folk-inspired Musicality

    No full text
The literary works of Lennart Hellsing have had a significant impact on the rise of modern Swedish books for children. Having worked closely with outstanding illustrators and eminent composers, the author created an ultimate masterpiece which, at the same time, became an alternative to the aesthetics of the turn of the century, still dominant in the 1940s. Turning towards the new did not mean that the author wished to cut off his works from tradition. This article aims at presenting how Lennart Hellsing used rhythmical, syntactical and melodic structures originating in Swedish folklore on different levels of his literary achievements. A very special place in Hellsing’s writing was occupied by the folk song, which in his works was also present in a network of intertextual ties

The increasingly multicultural Europe also has to develop a multicultural labour market with representation from different groups in all areas and at all levels. In this chapter the author highlights the conflicts between Minority Quotas and discrimination.</p

I Guds Namn. Migration och främlingskap i Lennart Hager fors Längta hem. Om ett missionärsbarn i Kongo

In this article I analyze the autobiographical novel Längta hem. Om ett missionärsbarn i Kongo (2003) by Lennart Hagerfors in order to understand how otherness is presented and how it is linked to the status of migration and being Swedish. I argue that the novel shows two distinct forms of otherness. The first is on the personal and individual level of the protagonist that is caused by his migration from Sweden to Congo. The other is on a cultural and national level, which situates Sweden in between the Congolese and French culture. While the first personal form of strangeness is viewed as problematic and must be overcome, the second form can be read as an expression of the positive Swedish self-image that situates Sweden outside of Europe’s colonial history and therefore posits Sweden as a type of humanitarian Great Power or global conscience

The 'Third Way' Revisited. A Revaluation of the Swedish Model in the Light of Modern Economics.

    No full text
The macroeconomic principles behind the Swedish model were developed by two trade union economists, Gösta Rehn and Rudolf Meidner, shortly after World War II. The model’s economic and wage policy represents a unique third way between keynesianism and monetarism in its approach to combine full employment and growth with price stability and equity. This essay describes the content and economic foundation of the Rehn-Meidner model and evaluates its validity in the light of later theoretical and empirical work. With some exceptions, the model is either in harmony with or a serious challenge to current thinking about employment, inflation and growth. The model’s main contribution to economics is its dynamic description of wage formation, giving room for both competitive forces, X-inefficient firms and wage setting phenomena such as relative wage preferences, labour market policy and a wage policy of fairness. The model also makes a valuable contribution to modern growth economics by incorporating the idea that structural change and company productivity can be promoted by profit squeezes induced by wage and economic policy.Profits; Inflation; Fair Wages; Labour-market policy; Fiscal Policy; Employment; Productivity; Structural change

Lennart Nilsson's Fish-Eyes : A Photographic and Cultural History of Views from Below

    No full text
This article examines the Swedish photo-grapher Lennart Nilsson’s wide-angle imagery in its production and circulation contexts from the mid-1960s to the 1980s. It focuses in particular on a sample of photographs, labelled “fish-eye” because of the specific nature of their distorted perspective, which he produced for magazines, books and films during this period. The aim is to shed light on how these pictures contributed to stimulating an alternative mode of spectatorship, the view from below, challenging the viewing position created by the traditional linear perspective of painting and photography. The author shows how an immersive and transparent experience of the images could exist side by side with its apparent opposite: the hypermediated experience of the same type of image. It is also suggested that Nilsson’s fish- eye photographs have been important in naturalizing a specific way of seeing foetal life in contemporary visual and media culture
