Parametric variation in differential object marking in Italo-Romance

    No full text
This article provides an exhaustive review of the known variation found in the distribution of differerential object marking across the dialects of Italy, including those of central and northern Italy, in order to identify the relevant dimensions of microvariation in relation to information structure, animacy, specificity, person, number and the head vs phrasal distinction. Despite some similarities with other Romance varieties, there are some notable differences in the distribution of differential object marking in the dialects of Italy. Based on this examination, a parametric hierarchy is developed which maps the differing licensing conditions on differential object marking across Italy in an attempt to highlight the precise pragmatic, semantic and syntactic parameters involved in the observed patterns of distribution, their nature and their possible interactions

The civil position of Alexandru V. Boldur

    No full text
The article is devoted to the civil position of the Bessarabian historian Alexandru Boldur in certain life circumstances. The author on the basis of archival materials presents and analyzes a concrete example - two appeals, the first to the Bucharest authorities through the newspaper "Romany Libera", and the second on the occasion of the obituary dedicated to the historian Alexander Gonts. This is a convincing evidence of the personality of a man who was distinguished by courage and perseverance, such as Alexandru Boldur

The syntactic distribution of raddoppiamento fonosinttatico in Cosentino

    No full text
This chapter undertakes an overview of the structural conditions regulating the distribution of a phonological fortition process, raddoppiamento fonosintattico “phonosyntactic doubling”, in the Calabrian dialect of Cosenza, focusing on some particularly striking cases which also reveal the role of phases in constraining the application of RF. On the one hand, the data highlight the advantages of interpreting locality not just narrowly in terms of the three core structural configurations Spec-Head, Head-Head and Head-Comp, but also more broadly in terms of phasal domains, showing how different phonological realizations represent the spell-out of deep syntactic differences mapped at the interface between narrow syntax and PF (Phonological Form). On the other, the theoretical assumptions assumed here provide us with the key to understanding some intriguing empirical generalizations about the role of RF in signalling, among other things, informational structure content and binding relations, which, in turn, throw new light on current theoretical assumptions about clause structure and the nature of phases

This study examines the activities of the Romanian Greek Catholic (Uniate) Metropolitan (Archbishop) of Blaj, Alexandru Sterca-Şuluţiu in support of the Romanian national movement in the Habsburg province of Transylvania between 1860 and 1865. His colleague, the Orthodox Bishop Andrei Şaguna, is the better known Transylvanian Romanian leader in this story, but Sterca-Şuluţiu made a unique contribution through his combative style that reflects his social origin as a member of the minor nobility of Transylvania's western mountain region

Abstract - Empirical studies outline the importance of the “institutional quality” in the relation between finance and growth. Demetriades and Law (2004) show that financial development has a positive effect on economic growth when institutions are “sound”, while this correlation disappears if institutions are “poor”. The goal of this paper is to reproduce this result in an endogenous growth model. In our setup, when institutional quality exceeds a certain threshold, the relation between finance and growth is positive, while negative below. This result may be explained by the fact that financial development weakens transaction costs on private investment, but also reduces seigniorage resources for public investment. Consequently, financial develop-ment is growth-enhancing if other resources may be used to finance public investment, namely if the institutional quality is sufficient to allow for collecting public resources other than inflation tax. Conversely, in case of poor institutional quality, the loss of seigniorage revenues cannot be compensated by collecting new taxes, and development-enhancing infrastructures cannot be carried out.CROISSANCE ENDOGÈNE, EFFETS DE SEUIL, POLITIQUE MONÉTAIRE, DÉVELOPPEMENT FINANCIER, POLITIQUE FISCALE, INSTITUTIONS
