Intellectual Bullying among University Teachers: Motives and Reactions
It seems, at first glance, that the term bullying has to do with reckless, grumpy, young, disrespectful persons who want to tease and mock others who are weak or unsecure. However, there is another insidious type of bullying which is called intellectual bullying; it occurs among intellects that are knowledgeable, smart, and successful in specific field. The worst is that such bullying is perpetrated with colleagues and friends. Though intellects represent the cornerstone in a various political, social, economic, religious, and academic realms, they are not active any more. The present paper is done at Mila University Centre; it seeks to collect data about teachers’ perspectives about bullying behavior among them, its motives, and how should the bullying intellects react towards such harassment? A teachers’ questionnaire is the means used for collecting data. The data are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, implications of findings about bullying in academic settings are drawn, and suggestions for further research are provided
An Autonomic Piloting Plane for the Handover Decision Optimization
International audienceWith the expansion and the diversification of current networks in terms of applications, technologies and services, the network control and management are becoming overly hard to manage manually even for skilled administrators. The autonomic computing and the knowledge plane are two promising initiatives proposed to cope with the ever-growth network complexity. In this article, we propose to use the piloting plane concept to grant autonomicity in current networks. This plane aims at optimizing existing applications by using elaborate algorithms fed by pertinent knowledge recovered from the knowledge plane. In our approach, we demonstrate that the knowledge and the piloting planes are complementary and both are required when implementing autonomic solutions. We illustrate our proposal by applying these concepts on the handover selection phase which is a key issue in the handover process for granting global mobility to users in heterogeneous environment. We also describe a first implementation of our handover piloting system. Results from preliminary tests in real environments scenario exhibit the effectiveness of our system
A Utility-based Handover Decision Scheme for Heterogeneous Wireless Networks
International audienceWith the massive deployment of sophisticated personal devices equipped with different access technologies for both wireless and cellular, mobile users should benefit from service continuity anytime anywhere. This paper seeks to bring seamless connectivity and performance continuity to the mobile users according to their needs and preferences. To this end, it focuses on handover decision that determines the need to initiate the handover and select the best access network. Handover decision in heteregeneous environments is a typical multi-objectives decision issue that requires efficient decision strategies. In this article, we propose an innovative handover decision scheme based on utility theory principles to deal effectively with the challenges revealed by the dynamic, probabilistic, and technological aspects of the multi-objectives decision problem. Our model is based on a single-criterion utility function that rates user satisfaction and captures sensitivity for each decision criterion. As well, an adaptive multi-criteria utility function is defined according to user preferences. Performance of the proposed handover decision strategy is evaluated via extensive simulation studies. Obtained results show that our strategy outperforms other handover decision schemes, which confirm the suitability and the efficiency of our solution
HODSTAT: A HandOver Decision STAbility Technique for minimizing instability in Wireless Local Area Networks
International audienceIn this paper a new technique called The HandOver Decision STAbility Technique (HODSTAT) is proposed for horizontal handover in Wireless Local Area Networks based on IEEE 802.11 standard. HODSTAT addresses the decision instability which impacts negatively on both user perception and network performances. HODSTAT is based on a hysteresis margin analysis that, combined with a utility-based function, evaluates the need for the handover and determines if the handover is needed or can be avoided. Indeed, if a Mobile Terminal (MT) only transiently hands over to a better network, the gain from using this new network may be diminished by the handover overhead and short usage duration. The approach that we adopt throughout this article aims at reducing with the minimum handover occurrence that leads to network connectivity cut which causes additional delay and packet loss. To this end, MT rather performs a handover only if the connectivity of the current network is threatened or if the performance of a neighboring network is really better comparing to the current one with a hysteresis margin. This hysteresis should make a tradeoff between handover occurrence and the necessity to change the current network of attachment. Through our extensive simulation results, we show that our proposed algorithm outperforms other decision stability approaches for handover decision algorithm
Removal of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) from Wastewater Using Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs):Screening of Effective Adsorbent
The increasing presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in wastewater has raised environmental and health concerns. This study investigates the potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), such as MIL-53, MIL-101(Cr), MIL-100(Fe), UiO-66, and ZIFs, for efficient removal of PPCPs like bisphenol A (BPA), diclofenac sodium, and ibuprofen. These MOFs have been evaluated for adsorption and release of PPCPs, and the impact of different functionalization techniques was assessed. The physico-chemical properties of MOFs were characterized using XRD, and their adsorption kinetics and isotherms were analyzed. The results aligned well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. Various water chemistry factors, including solution temperature and pH, were examined to understand the adsorption mechanisms.Initial results suggest that the interaction of PPCPs with MOFs can lead to the development of structural defects under natural conditions, and performance is further improved by optimizing the pH value of the solution. Kinetic adsorption results indicate that MOFs, such as MIL-53 and UiO-66, effectively remove PPCPs from wastewater at room temperature. The effect of temperature was investigated to optimize performance, with initial results suggesting that the temperature effect is controlled by the nature of the adsorption reaction (endothermic or exothermic). This study highlights the promising use of MOFs in wastewater treatment applications for efficient PPCP removal. The insights on specific water chemistry factors and adsorption mechanisms will prove valuable to future researchers focusing on the treatment of PPCP-containing wastewater
LE ROI DE KAHEL ET LE TERRORISTE NOIR DE MONENEMBO: UNE REECRITURE POSTCOLONIALE DE L’HISTOIRE
The historical evolution of the African continent was not smooth; the region experienced many upheavals including two powerful traumas that are slavery and colonialism. It is therefore not surprising that African writers, who are mainly inspired by the world around them, revisit History to write their novels. Among them, the Guinean writer Tierno Monénembo. The writer sheds the light on the history that has painfully shaken his continent, West Africa more precisely. His novels translate the almost obsessive concern to narrate the story of the African continent. We propose to study two of his novels: The king of Kahel (2008) and The black terrorist (2012). In these novels, the author offers a different reading of colonial memory, moving away from the long-standing Manichaeism between white and black. Through the romanticized biography of Viscount Sanderval - driven by a sincere desire to civilize the negroes but at the same time to conquer a kingdom in the region of Fouta-Djalon-, or that of Addi Bâ, a young Senegalese gunner who will enter, during the Second World War, in France, the reader is invited to dive into a troubled past and discover all the complexity of Franco-African politics. Our purpose is to show the way History fits in the novels of Monénembo, by studying literary devices in the novels as well as the representation of two historical figures: Sanderval and Addi Bâ
Style in Translation A Comparative Stylistic Analysis of The Sand Child by Tahar Ben Jelloun
Recently, Theorists began to think that studying language linguistically is insufficiently beneficial, literary critics also believed that a mere literary analysis easily fall into dilemma, because the scope of their work deals only with language as a combination of words to convert message. Some questions whether the language expressed in literature may carry beyond what is supposed and that affects a generation of thoughts. A systematic wide range interdisciplinary seemed to find answers in the highly specialized language studies; this is what stylistics shows as it concerns. The interdisciplinary nature of the field means that stylistics typically cooperates some acquaintance with linguistics. As far as our research concerns, we attempted to purposefully relate this discipline with literary translation.
The main research question that leads us to accomplish this research paper was if the translator ability to transform the style of the original author would implicitly or explicitly transfer the meaning embedded in those stylistic features of the original text. A comparative analysis has to be underlined so we can grasp the traces of stylistic aspects in both translated and original texts. The Sand Child looked the best example for many reasons, mentioned in paper; we tried to provide a systematic analytic comparison between both styles. Eventually, we figured out the translator may succeed in reaching a faithful translation where he worked to keep stylistics prints of its original author; and thus, meaning upon the two texts is well-communicated. In fact, we believe, stylistics enhances our ability to interpret various meanings. Stylistics is more than studying language; it shortens distance between us and authors. A study that really merits much attention and further studies
An autonomic mobility management solution for the future wireless Internet
International audienceThe recent development of a myriad of heterogeneous wireless technologies that share the same core IP is driving the mobility as a key issue for the future wireless Internet. One of the critical challenges is to support uninterrupted and seamless multimedia services while on the move. This article focuses on mobility management in the future Internet regarding a solution proposed in the Autonomic Internet (AutoI) project. Our mobility management solution aims at enhancing user mobility experience and enabling adaptability and context awareness in the future wireless Internet. This is achieved through the use of more adequate information exploited by a utility-based mobility decision approach as well as a hysteresis margin to preserve decision stability. The proposed solution is discussed and experimental validations are performed to evaluate its impact on real-world scenarios. The proposed solution has been demonstrated to be effective in providing seamless user experience even with frequent handovers. Further, the use of the hysteresis-based mobility decision solution has been effective to reduce the number of handovers, without precluding the quality of connections
"THE CORONA CRASH", BY GRACE BLAKELEY: A BOOK REVIEW
In this note, we come up with a review and presentation of the book “The Corona Crash: How the Pandemic Will Change Capitalism” by Grace Blakeley, a political and economics specialist who had various professional experiences, with companies such as KPMG and IPPR North in England.
In 2019 Grace released her early book, Stolen: How to Save the World from Financialization, She also worked as a journalist and a columnist for Tribune Newspaper.
Through her book - subject of this presentation and review-, the author exposed the fact that the current world has faced an epidemic and financial crisis because of the capitalist policies pursued in the leading countries for decades. In addition, she includes a reflexion by suggesting some solutions that maintain a socialist and environmental approach, based on social justice, solidarity, equality and the environment protecting policies
Women and politics in Algeria: essays on political representation
Gender and politics scholars have sought to determine whether there is a link between women’s descriptive representation, operationalized as the proportion of seats held by women in a national legislature, and women’s substantive representation, usually operationalized as laws that advance women’s rights. But, except for a few studies, the Arab world has not received significant attention which is surprising because the region has experienced a significant increase in women’s presence in politics. Further, most of this work has focused on democratic contexts, obscuring whether hypothesized links between women’s descriptive and substantive representation work in the same way in authoritarian contexts. To fill these gaps in the literature, I focus on the case of Algeria, where women’s presence in parliament increased from 8% to 31.6% after the adoption of a gender quota in 2012.
Drawing on in-depth interviews with a wide range of stakeholders, my research examines the backgrounds of women elected, constituency service priorities, legislative dynamics, and women’s agency. I argue that the “authoritarian toolkit,” i.e., the resources available to authoritarian governments to manage and control political outcomes, shapes women’s descriptive, substantive, and symbolic representation in ways that are distinct from how these dynamics operate in more democratic contexts.
While women parliamentarians reject the notion that they have an obligation to introduce and pass women’s rights laws, they invest time in helping their male and female constituents solve their everyday problems to challenge the notion that women do not belong in politics. Therefore, there may not be strong links between women's descriptive and substantive representation. However, the efforts of elected women on behalf of their male constituents may advance women’s symbolic representation by demonstrating women's abilities in the political realm.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical reference
