An Investigation of Students’ Language Learning Strategies in Mastering Speaking Skill at English and Literature Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar

This research aimed to investigate the students’ language learning strategies used in mastering speaking skill, investigating the most dominant students’ language learning strategies used by the students in mastering speaking skill and finding out the differences of using students’ language learning strategies used between high achiever and low achiever students in mastering speaking skill.
The researcher applied mixed method research, Qual-quant model. The Population of this research was the fourth semester students of English and Literature Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar.The Sample was the fourth semester students of English and Literature department, which consist of 24 students. This research used simple random sampling technique. This research used 2 kinds of instruments, they were think aloud and questionnaire.
The result of this study showed that (1) students’ language learning strategies used in mastering speaking skill were memorizing vocabularies, using picture, using rhythm categorized as memory strategy. Listening to the music, watching English video, watching English movie, using dictionary, watching English TV program, practicing with friend, listing difficult vocabularies, reading English book, speaking with native speaker, speaking alone, doing conversation, sending English message, repeating categorized as cognitive strategy. Joining the club meeting, getting course, attending an English area, getting an English private, papying attention, writing in Bahasa categorized as metacognitive strategy. Using gesture, using similar word, guessing, categorized as compensation strategy. Speaking with friend, asking question to the lecturer or friend categorized as social strategy. Discussing problem, discussing with friend categorized as affective strategy. (2) the most dominant students’ language learning strategies used by the student was metacognitive strategy with the highest preference. (3) The high achiever students employed different strategies than low achiever students. High achiever students employed indirect strategies, metacognitive strategy and low achiever students employed direct strategies, compensation strategy.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi strategi belajar siswa dalam menguasai kemampuan berbicara, menginvestigasi strategi yang paling dominan digunakan oleh mahasiswa dalam menguasai kemampuan berbicara dan menemukan apakah anda perbedaan penggunaan strategi belajar antara mahasiswa mahasiswa berprestasi tinggi dengan mahasiswa berprestasi rendah.
Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran yaitu Qual-quant model. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester 4 jurusan bahasa dan sastra Inggris UIN Alauddin Makassar. Sampelnya adalah mahasiswa semester 4 yang terdiri dari 25 mahasiswa. Penelitian in menggunakan simple random sampling technique. Penelitian ini juga menggunakan 2 jenis instrument yaitu berfikir secara dalam dan kuesioner.
Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) strategi belajar yang digunakan mahasiswa dalam menguasai kemampuan berbicara adalah menghafal kosakata, menggunakan gambar, menggunakan irama, termasuk dalam kategori memory strategi. Mendengarkan musik, menonton video berbahasa Inggris, menonton film berbahasa Inggris, menonton siaran TV berbahasa Inggris, menggunakan kamus, praktek, mencatat kosakata yang susah, membaca buku berbahasa Inggris, berbicara dengan penutur asli, berbicara dengan diri sendiri, mengulang, termasuk dalam kategori cognitive strategi. Mengikuti meeting club, menghadiri perkampungan bahasa Inggris, kursus bahasa Inggris, memberikan perhatian, menulis dalam bahasa Indonesia, termasuk dalam kategori metacognitive strategi. Menggunakan bahasa tubuh, menggunakan persamaan kata, menebak, termasuk dalam kategori compensation strategi. Berbicara dengan teman, memberikan pertanyaan kepada dosen atau teman, termasuk dalam kategori social strategi. Berdiskusi dengan teman dan mendiskusikan masaalah termasuk dalam kategori affective strategi. (2) strategi yang paling dominan di gunakan oleh mahasiswa adalah metacognitive strategy dengan tingkat penggunaan yang sering. (3) Ada perbedaan peggunaan strategi antara mahasiswa berprestasi tinggi dibandingkan dengan siswa berprestasi rendah. Mahasiswa berprestasi tinggi menggunakan strategi tidak langsung yaitu metacognitive strategi, sedangkan mahasiswa berprestasi rendah menggunakan strategi langsung yaitu compensation strategy
Designing Big Story Book Project (BSBP) in Teaching Reading Comprehension
This research aimed find out the effectiveness of using big story book project (BSBP) in teaching reading comprehension and to know the advantages and the disadvantages of using BSBP in teaching reading comprehension. The researcher applied pre-experimental research design and consists of pre-test, treatment and post-test in order to find whether the big story book project (BSBP) effective in teaching reading comprehension. The instruments used in this research were reading test and questionnaire. The result from this research shows that using big story book project (BSBP) in teaching reading comprehension is effective. It is proved by the result that there is significant difference between the result of the students’ mean score in the pre-test and the post-test. In the pre-test, the students’ mean score is (43.79) and in the post-test is (80.37). Furthermore, it is proved by the probability value is smaller than α (0.00 < 0.05). On the other word, BSBP has advantages to the students if applied in teaching and learning process, especially in reading subject
The Influence of Lecturers’ Personality toward Students’ Achievement in Learning English in the Second Year Student (Academic Year 2009/2010) of English and Literature Department
Based on the findings and discussion in this thesis, the writer found that the correlation between lecturer who teaches speaking and the students’ achievement is medium correlation (0.44), the correlation between lecturer who teaches reading and the students’ achievement is medium correlation (0.40), the correlation between lecturer who teaches writing and the students’ achievement is medium correlation (0.41), and the correlation between lecturer who teaches listening and the students’ achievement is low correlation (0.39). The result of analysis shows that T. test is bigger than T. table (83.7225) ≥ T. table (55.76), it indicates the lecturers’ personality factors influence the second year students’ achievement in learning English.

Investigating the Phenomenon of Directed Motivational Current (DMC) in EFL Learners: A Case Study on How DMC Works for ESP Learners
Directed Motivational Current (DMC), or DMCs, is a new theory in the field of applied linguistics introduced by Dornyei and his colleagues (2015). Although research on DMC in second language acquisition (L2) has advanced recently, systematic analysis of EFL learners remains insufficient. In this context, through an activity-theoretic lens and the novelty of this theory, this study examined how EFL learners experience the key aspects of DMC. The three students identified as having DMC took part in this research. Data were gathered through observations and semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that when EFL learners experience DMC, they engage with all the core elements of DMC, including goals and vision, triggering factors, salient facilitative structures, and positivity emotionality. Further, personalized learning experiences, supportive learning environments, and ongoing self-reflection were crucial for maintaining motivation and achieving language proficiency. Students who actively monitor their progress, celebrate their achievements, and manage their time and resources effectively demonstrate a greater capacity for sustained engagement and successful language acquisition. These results emphasise that while everyone is motivated, not all experience DMC. EFL learners illustrate this, indicating a crucial opportunity to develop and explore how DMC affects English learning
Human centric object perception for service robots
The research interests and applicability of robotics have diversified and seen atremendous growth in recent years. There has been a shift from industrial robots operating in constrained settings to consumer robots working in dynamic environments associated closely with everyday human activities. Personal service robots to assist elderly, compliant robots with advanced perception skills for flexible manufacturing and autonomous driving vehicles for safe transportation are among the promising directions. In all these cases, robots have to work in close cooperation with human users and an intuitive higher level interaction between robots and layman users is essential for its widespread acceptability. Hence in this thesis, development of cognitive and perceptual skills in humans is studied and applied to the development of robot’s perceptual skills, especially based on visual information from a user interaction point of view.A physical robot is developed from scratch considering the aspects of affordability and user acceptability. A 9 DoF robot, LEA which incorporates a differential drive base, 4 DoF arm with a gripper and a pan-tilt neck supporting the robot’s head. The entire mechanics and control electronics are custom developed leading to decreased mechanical complexity and increased flexibility in physical dimensions. All the components are well integrated with a socially appealing industrial design which has been well received by the public and media. The limitations arising from simplified mechanics and affordable hardware are compensated by advanced adaptive vision algorithms to achieve the required functionalities of a service robot. A generic human centric architecture for highly autonomous and interactive robots is proposed to integrate various capabilities of a robot that are triggered by user interaction. A specific case of object recognition is investigated, as many tasks faced by such robots involve perception and manipulation of different household objects.An intuitive non-verbal interaction between a user and a robot for conveying objects of interest to the robot is developed. The developed spatial grounding model can detect the object of user interest independent of the relative position between the robot, the user and the object and without any prior training. This is achieved by a hybrid attention system combining bottom-up color saliency with depth image and top-down cues comprising user’s pointing direction and gaze. Robustness of gaze based attention system is improved by automatically switching between a keypoint based and a color based approach depending on objects’ texture.The recognition of these objects is achieved with a three layered semantic recognition framework that can incorporate multiple modalities of information. Developed based on studies of human perception, this method achieves recognition robustness in unconstrained domestic environments while providing semantic grounding with human users. Modalities of color, shape and object location have been incorporated into this recognition model while maintaining flexibility to include additional modalities. The first layer consists of semantic grounding modules that abstract raw sensory information into a probability distribution over meaningful semantic concepts familiar to humans. A second layer operates on these semantic features to obtain an object hypothesis based on every individual modality. The last layer performs knowledge association to estimate combined probability over known objects to obtain the final inference.A novel algorithm to track contours of objects and persons to allow exploration from different viewpoints is developed. Visual model of the target is refined by considering only the dominant 3D cluster within the initial bounding box. A tracking-by detection algorithm constrains the search space in the image by removing regions based on metric size constancy of the object and other structural patterns like perpendicular planes. A feature based on Color Naming System has been used with an online learning classifier to obtain a color probability map while the depth probability map is obtained by using a Gaussian model of the object’s depth distribution. An optimal fusion of different object modalities using a target-background dissimilarity measure is developed and is used in a graphcut framework to continuously obtain contours of the target object.The reliability of recognition of these objects in challenging domestic environments is enhanced using visual appearances from multiple views while incorporating the spatial relations between these viewpoints as well. A Sequence Alignment algorithm has been used with vector quantized features from each view to achieve view point correlation in object recognition. A fast Visual Odometry estimation has been used to obtain viewpoint relations in an unsupervised manner and this has been incorporated with segmentation to provide a standalone system that can be used in real world scenario. This system is made generic to be used with different feature vectors and a benchmark is created to compare the performance improvement achieved by the developed system with respect to single view object recognition using different feature vectors.Object recognition in service robots can be augmented by incorporating the context of objects’ use within the developed semantic recognition framework. The utility of an object can be understood by the actions performed by the user on the object and hence an Action Recognition system based on human skeletal tracking with a novelty detection method is developed to facilitate the incremental learning of new actions. Compact representations of skeletal structure are obtained using a Torso-PCA transform and are used as observations for a HMM based system to recognize user actions. Uncertainty in predictions, quantified as confidence measures are thresholded to detect unknown actions. These confidence measures are obtained through background models and different methods are evaluated with respect to sensitivity and specificity of recognition performance.Various algorithms are developed to enhance the reliability of object perception overcoming challenges posed by dynamic environments and affordable hardware by incorporating different modalities of information available to a robot. The development of algorithms in this direction is significant as these concepts can be readily extended to incorporate user and environment recognition to complete the perceptual capabilities of robots

Šajā bakalaura darbā tiks novērtētas pašreizējās kvalitātes kontroles procedūras un kvalitātes nodrošināšanas sistēma, ko izmanto slēģu durvju uzņēmums, un salīdzinātas tās ar labāko praksi, ko izmanto citās nozarēs. Tā noteiks jomas, kurās jāuzlabo uzņēmuma kvalitātes kontroles procedūras un kvalitātes nodrošināšana, un redzēs to efektivitāti. Galvenais mērķis ir ieteikt un ieviest labāko praksi kvalitātes nodrošināšanai un kontrolei slēģu durvju ražošanas un uzstādīšanas uzņēmumos, piemēram, Abbas Biljeek &; Sons, lai uzlabotu savu produktu un pakalpojumu kvalitāti un palielinātu to konkurētspēju tirgū. Inženiertehniskajā projektā iegūtie rezultāti ietvers vispārēju defektu līmeņa samazinājumu un ražošanas izmaksu samazināšanos, kā rezultātā uzņēmums ietaupīs.The aim of this thesis is to explore the importance of quality assurance and control procedures in the manufacturing and installation of shutter doors. Inadequate quality control procedures and quality assurance in the manufacturing and installation of these products can lead to safety hazards and costly repairs for both the company and its customers. This thesis will evaluate the current quality control procedures and quality assurance system used by shutter door company and compare them with the best practices used in other industries. It will identify areas for improvement in the company's quality control procedures and quality assurance and see its effectiveness. The ultimate goal is to recommend and implement the best practices for quality assurance and control in shutter door manufacturing and installation companies, such as Abbas Biljeek & Sons, to improve the quality of their products and services and enhance their competitiveness in the market. The methodology will involve the finding the optimal settings for sheets used for manufacturing of shutter door using methods of interpolation and extrapolation. The results obtained from the engineering project will include overall reduction in defect rate and the decreased cost of production resulting in savings for the company
A Computer Model to Estimate Benefits of Data Link Mandates and Reduced Separations across North Atlantic Organized Track System
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) proposed to introduce new operational strategies across the North Atlantic (NAT) airspace. This includes Minimum Navigation Performance Specifications (MNPS) airspace to increase the capacity and efficiency of the North Atlantic Organized Track System (NAT OTS). A numerical integration and simulation model called North Atlantic Simulation and Modeling (NATSAM) is developed to study the effects of these new strategies on NAT system performance. The model is capable of investigating the effects of implementing different operational policies and strategies proposed by ICAO such as Reduced Lateral Separation Minimum (RLatSM), NAT Region Data link mandate (DLM), Reduced Longitudinal Separation Minimum (RLongSM), cruise-climb profiles, variable Mach number profiles, step-climbs and other operational concepts to be studied by the ICAO.
NATSAM models the individual flight performance using the Base of Aircraft Data (BADA) 3.9 model to calculate the flight profiles and fuel burn. The model employs simple heuristics to execute flight track assignment in the organized track system for each scenario. HANDBOOK OF LESSON STUDY FOR THE SERVICE TRAINING STUDENTS OF PALOPO COKROAMINOTO UNIVERSITY
This research is aimed to find out the students interest to the handbook of lesson study. Whether, this research also wants to know the advantages and the disadvantages and the students’ perception toward handbook of lesson study. This research will be descriptive qualitative research and consists of questionnaire and think aloud as instrument to know the students interest and their perception, advantages and disadvantages of the handbook. The population of this research will be the fifth semester students or who are in service training 3 or Magang III of English department students of Palopo Cokroaminoto University. Sample consists of 200 students and purposive sampling technique will be used. The result from this research will be used as guide for the students who want to teach in class or school they do Magang III by applying lesson study. It is also can contribute to campus as handbook based on UNCP. Furthermore, this handbook will help the lecturers also in introducing lesson study and the teachers also who applied lesson study in their school
