The Role of Critical Reading Skill in Enhancing The Academic Competence of Law Students in The Context of International Law

Law students, especially those specializing in international law, encounter significant challenges regarding their critical reading abilities. Critical reading necessitates active engagement, compelling readers to think critically and employ various skills to identify key concepts, draw conclusions, make connections, anticipate purposes, analyze arguments, consider diverse perspectives, and evaluate ideas effectively. This research investigates the role of critical reading skills in enhancing the academic competence of law students within the context of international law. It employs a qualitative research design, utilizing case studies, interviews, and focus group discussions with fifth-semester students at the Faculty of Law, Muslim University of Indonesia. The findings reveal that critical reading skills significantly improve students' abilities to analyze complex legal texts, such as treaties and court decisions, by enabling them to identify key arguments, underlying biases, and contextual nuances. Structured frameworks, such as the SQ3R method and Legal Case-Based Reading (LCbR), are shown to foster deeper engagement with materials and facilitate the application of legal principles to real-world scenarios. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of exploring diverse perspectives, particularly those of marginalized groups, in enriching students' understanding of social and cultural implications. Ultimately, this research contributes to legal education reform by emphasizing the necessity of integrating critical reading skills into law curricula to better prepare students for the challenges of professional practice

Analysis of the Influence of the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Academic Interactions on Students' Language Politeness

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education is increasingly widespread, but its impact on pragmatic competencies such as language politeness has not been widely studied. This study aims to: (1) measure the effect of AI use on students' language politeness, (2) explore students' interpretations of these changes, and (3) analyze significant differences between groups using AI and those not. This study used a mixed method with a quasi-experimental design involving students divided into experimental (n=30) and control (n=29) groups. Data were collected through language politeness tests (pre-test and post-test), Focus Group Discussions (FGD), interviews, and observations, then analyzed statistically (t-test) and thematically. The results showed that: (1) There was a significant increase in the experimental group (from an average of 53.70 to 60.17; p < 0.001). (2) Students perceive AI as a learning partner that triggers cognitive, behavioral, and affective transformation, and (3) There is no significant difference between the scores of the experimental and control groups (p = 0.138). These findings indicate that although AI is effective in improving language politeness, the improvement can be matched by other methods that are also successful in raising metapragmatic awareness. The control group achieved equivalent results through the use of social support (social scaffolding), intensive self-evaluation, and high motivation triggered by awareness as research participants (Hawthorne Effect). Therefore, it can be concluded that metapragmatic awareness is a key factor that is more decisive in improving language politeness, compared to simply using certain tools or technologies

Literary Texts Strategies of Teaching to Improve Portuguese Skills in Basic Education

This study aims to investigate the pedagogical strategies used to teach literary texts in basic education in Timor-Leste, with a focus on less-explored genres such as poetry, fables, traditional tales, prayers (hamulak), and legends. Based on a literature review, various didactic strategies were identified, including the use of audiovisual resources, debate circles, educational games, and reading and retelling texts. These strategies can serve as facilitating tools in Portuguese language instruction, allowing basic education teachers to enrich their pedagogical knowledge and promote the development of essential linguistic skills for students' academic and personal growth in Timor-Leste and the Lusophone community. The research was conducted at Santa Úrsula Basic Education School in Baucau. There were seven (7) participants: one Portuguese language teacher and six (6) students from grades 7, 8, and 9. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, choosing participants with specific knowledge of the phenomenon under investigation. The methods used were observation, document analysis, and semi-structured interviews. The data will be interpreted qualitatively using thematic analysis to understand the impact of these strategies on student learning. The results show that the teacher uses various strategies, including content adaptation and the use of the Tetum language as a support language to overcome linguistic barriers. However, the research identified infrastructure limitations and the need for increased use of interactive methodologies, such as dramatization and games, which students strongly desire. The study concludes that literature teaching in Timor-Leste requires a multilingual and multicultural approach, with cooperation among teachers, schools, and institutions to improve the quality of education.    &nbsp

Literature Study on the Challenges and Successes of Augmented Reality Implementation in Studying Arabic Mufradat

Despite facing significant challenges, Augmented Reality (AR) has proven to be a highly effective and promising tool for revitalizing Arabic vocabulary (mufradat) learning. Generally, AR is a major success because it creates a more interactive and engaging learning environment, which in turn significantly boosts students' motivation, interest, and comprehension. This key success stems from AR's ability to provide 3D visualization of the mufradat, making it much easier for students to memorize and understand abstract word meanings while bridging the gap between theory and practice. The positive impact is clearly visible in the increase in students' average test scores, the strengthening of vocabulary mastery, and the improvement of speaking skills (maharah kalam). However, this progress is met with major challenges, both pedagogical and technical. Pedagogical issues include conventional methods being monotonous and unappealing, students struggling to master and recall vocabulary, and the problem of insufficient teacher readiness in using the new technology. Technical constraints, on the other hand, involve limited AR content, issues with device compatibility (often restricted to the Android system), and the high error rate in text recognition. Therefore, while AR is a powerful solution for overcoming traditional challenges, it requires ongoing development and infrastructural support
