First results on an adaptive optics pre-mode cleaning system based on interferometric phase-front detection

    No full text
We present an adaptive optics (AO) system for the control of geometrical fluctuations in a laser beam based on the interferometric detection of phase front. By comparison with the usual Shack–Hartman-based AO system, we show that this technique is of particular interest when high sensitivity and high band-pass are required for correction of small perturbations such as, for instance, the control of the input beam of gravitational waves interferometric detectors

Blushing faces are an important presence in Robert Antelme’s L'Espèce humaine. When a face turns red (or pink) there is always a hidden meaning: the author of this essay demonstrates that, in this book, blushing and shame are heavily linked. The essay is divided in two sections: in the first, the author introduces the theme of faces in Antelme’s work; then, he compares two opposite interpretations of peculiar passages in L’Espèce humaine. Indeed, Giorgio Agamben states that red faces are often a sign of shame as onthological feeling; on the other side, Ruth Leys states that in L’Espèce humaine there isn’t any link between blushing and a fixed emotion and, especially, that shame hasn’t a role in this book

Rheology of complex fluids with vibrating fiber-optic sensors

    No full text
We demonstrate a new optical rheometer where a fiber Bragg grating sensor (FBG) detects the periodical strain caused by the oscillations of a string tightened within a sample fluid. We show that the viscoelastic moduli of complex fluids can be obtained instantaneously from the FBG optical backreflection signal, without need of any current flow in the wire or magnetic field that could affect the sample chemistry. After a validation with known-viscosity solutions, the technique is employed to monitor the phase transition of a sol-gel compound. The results provide an insight in the early-stage gelation dynamics that cannot be obtained with traditional rheometers, and allow to clearly identify the gel point as the intersection of the viscoelastic moduli

Palavras-chave Livros didáticos de matemática; educação matemática; história da educação matemática Abstract The mathematics' teacher from the Complementary School, attached to the Normal School of São Paulo, Saverio Cristofaro, published in 1929 his book "How to learn Mathematics". On the book's advertisement, The National Editor Company – Companhia Editora Nacional - announces that it is the first work that contemplates the reform approved by the congregation of the Pedro II School in that same year. At the presentation of his book, though it affirms that the text is in according to the new reform. The author explains it is the result of his personal experiences in fifteen years teaching. Experimental Science and Kabbalah in the Works of Francesco Giorgio (1466-1540)

The article deals with the role played by experimental science, or rather the attitude of the author towards experience and its possible relationship with Kabbalah, in the works, published and unpublished, by the Venetian Franciscan Francesco Giorgio (Zorzi). The author, well-known as a theologian, a Biblica exegete and an erudite, attributed the utmost importance to the Kabbalistic literature, showing a high degree of expertise in the matter. At the same time he took any opportunity to underline the epistemological value of experience and experimental knowledge in battling the Aristotelian-Averroistic worldview then prevailing in the academic world. a possible link between these two trends, apparently remote, is explored by delving into specific case studies, such as the Kabbalistically oriented mathematical understanding of natural phenomena and the magical-medicinal usage of prodigious liquids appearing miraculously in the cell of the nun Chiara Bugni, of the Venitian convent of Santo Sepolcro. Avoiding anachronism one can still see a robust inclination towards the natural verificaion of abstruse theories as a possible "franciscan" way of battling "dominican" thomism wich, although defeated by the Catholic reaction, stood as a possible Hermetic way of renewing the academic mindset decades before Francesco Patrizi and Giordano Bruno

Alla Maniera di Goethe. Su una traccia in Walter Benjamin

    No full text
A passage in the correspondence between Walter Benjamin and Gershom Scholem, of which a new Italian translation is announced, prompts an investigation into the possible source of a somewhat enigmatic clause in which Benjamin seems to cite Goethe. The problem of the text Benjamin would allude to, despite the efforts of the commentators (Scholem himself, Werner Kraft, Siegfried Unseld, among others) has led to several proposals, none of which is really satisfactory. The author adds further hypotheses that, precisely because of their proliferation, seem rather pointless. In the edition of the letters of Walter Benjamin, edited by Gödde and Lonitz, the latter have suggested a completely different hypothesis: Benjamin, referring to Goethe or, in other cases, to Zelter, would not allude to some specific text but to a peculiar grammatical figure, the elision of the (grammatical) subject in subordinate clauses. Starting from this debate the author tries to determine, from a somewhat eccentric vantage point, the role and significance of the Goethean reference in Benjamin and Scholem

Giuseppe Berto e la critica narrativa: l’introduzione a Canaletto

    No full text
The author of the essay comments on the introduction to Canaletto written by Giuseppe Berto for the Classici dell’arte series, published by Rizzoli. In order to fulfill the task, Berto does not use a technical language; on the contrary, he writes a narrative prose. The essay demonstrates how Berto chooses not to introduce, but to ‘narrate’ Canaletto, because he treats his story as a literary character’s one, develops the typical themes of his major novels and begins an identification process with the Venetian painter

On the SUPERPAVE Asphalt Mixture Gradations for the Mix Design of Traditional and Special Asphalts

    No full text
The Author proposes a methodology for the verification of the fulfilment rate of the particle size distribution specifications of the prescriptions limit grading curves, which are commonly used for the definition of bituminous asphalts admixtures, with the SUPERPAVE conditions related to the control points and to the restricted zone boundary. The operative phases of such methodology provide for the determination of the maximum nominal size of the aggregate, referred to the average curve of the limit grading curves in the semi-logarithmic plane of the sieves opening d-% passing and in the d 0,45-% passing. Afterwards, once the referring SUPEPAVE chart where to put the prescriptions limit grading curves is found, the critical points can be characterised in this way: type “a” when the violation of control points occurs , and type “b” when violations of the restricted zone boundary are experienced. Actions modifying the limit grading curves are proposed for each of these typologies, in order to get to curves consistent with the SUPERPAVE specifications. The methodology used for the limit grading curves of the main Italian prescriptions shows that, referring to traditional asphalts, small changes can make the limit grading curves consistent with the SUPERPAVE specifications. On the contrary, the Author found a strong incompatibility with special conglomerates (porous asphalts, stone mastic asphalts, etc)

The Perush ha-Tagin of Abraham Pico between Bibliography and Forgery

    No full text
In Agostino Giustiani’s polyglot Psalter, published on Genoa in 1516, one finds several quotations from Kabbalistic works that defy identification. Two of them purport to be taken from a book on the tagin (later identified with a version of the Sefer ha-Tagin), written by Abraham Pico. This work was wrongly described by Hebrew bibliographers, and from these descriptions, a blatant falsification was forged in the 18th century. This forgery introduced one of the two known quotations from Pico’s work into a large patchwork of passages entirely copied from the Shene Luḥot ha-Berit by Isaiah Horowitz. The true story of this text together with the numerous false paths taken by scholars is reconstructed here, and ends with the discovery of the true original Hebrew text preserved in a manuscript of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. The author demonstates that, by a fortunate strike of luck, this very manuscript had belonged to none else than Agostino Giustinian
