    A Reactive aggregate undetected by ASTM tests

    In the course of a Canadian investigation, a dolomitic limestone coarse aggregate has been found that produces excessive expansion and cracking in concrete. Despite the observed influence of cement alkalis, the results of the ASTM Test Method C289 on the limestone were negative. The results of the ASTM mortar bar test were also negative but indicated some alkali-reactivity in the limestone. This brief paper is intended to provide for the benefit of those concerned with the use of the standard tests for alkali- aggregate reaction a record of this Canadian experience with an apparently unusual case of cement-aggregate reaction for which the standard tests were not effective.Lors d?une enqu\ueate canadienne, on a d\ue9couvert un agr\ue9gat grossier de calcaire dolomitique, qui provoque dans le b\ue9ton une dilatation et une fissuration excessives.     Wear Measuring and Wear Modelling Based on Archard, ASTM, and Neural Network Models

    The wear measuring and wear modelling are a fundamental issue in the industrial field, mainly correlated to the economy and safety. Therefore, there is a need to study the wear measurements and wear estimation. Pin-on-disc test is the most common test which is used to study the wear behaviour. In this paper, the pin-on-disc (AEROTECH UNIDEX 11) is used for the investigation of the effects of normal load and hardness of material on the wear under dry and sliding conditions. In the pin-on-disc rig, two specimens were used; one, a pin which is made of steel with a tip, is positioned perpendicular to the disc, where the disc is made of aluminum. The pin wear and disc wear were measured by using the following instruments: The Talysurf instrument, a digital microscope, and the alicona instrument; where the Talysurf profilometer was used to measure the pin/disc wear scar depth, a digital microscope was used to measure the diameter and width of wear scar, and the alicona was used to measure the pin wear and disc wear. After that, the Archard model, American Society for Testing and Materials model (ASTM), and neural network model were used for pin/disc wear modelling. Simulation results are implemented by using the Matlab program. This paper focuses on how the alicona can be considered as a powerful tool for wear measurements and how the neural network is an effective algorithm for wear estimation

    A Simple Green Method For Biodiesel Iodine Number Determination

    A simple and green method for the determination of the iodine number in biodiesel is proposed based on the Friedmann procedure for oils and fats adapted for biodiesel. The reagent solutions used are prepared in water with the exception of the standard iodine and the biodiesel solutions that are dissolved in ethanol 96 %. The method was compared with the procedure recommended by the norm EN 14111, which is essentially the Wijs method. Biodiesel derived from several oils and fats were analyzed using the two methods. A statistical comparison between them shows that both offer equivalent results and precision.     Impact of heat treatment on HSS cutting tool (ASTM A600) and its behaviour during machining of mild steel (ASTM A36)

    Carburization is one the best heat treatment that responded well to hardening with Palm Kernel Shell giving the best hardness value. This work studied the influence of carburization on HSStool(ASTM A600) and its behaviour during machining of mild steel (ASTM A36). Composition of the samples (12 pieces of 180 x 12 x12 mm) HSS tools were checked using UV-VIS spectrometer and the tools were carburized with PKS at holding temperatures and time of 800, 850, 900,950 oC and 60,90 120 minutes using muffle furnance. The micro structural analysis, surface and core hardnessof the treated samples gave better results than the untreated samples when checked withsoft driven and optical microscope. It wasalso observed that increase in the feed rate and depth for length of cut of 50 mm significantly reduces the wear progression and thereby gave best machining time at maximum carburizing temperature and time(950 oC / 120 minutes) when it was used to cut mild steelon the lathe machine
