Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The purpose of this study is to examine whether the body image and social anxiety of secondary school students vary according to various variables. In line with this main goal, body image and social anxiety variables were examined according to gender, class level, education level of mother and father, perceived socio-economic level, parent-child relationship and sibling numbers. 325 female and 340 male students attending education and training in 10 secondary schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education participated in the research in Altındağ and Keçiören districts of Ankara in 2016-2017. The research was designed in a correlational scan model. "Social Anxiety Scale for the Adolescents", "Body Image Scale" and "Personal Information Form" prepared by the researcher were used in the collection of research data. In the analysis process, Independent Group t Test, One-Way and Multivariate Analysis of Variance and Pearson Moments Multiplication Correlation Analysis techniques from parametric tests were used because the datas were normally distributed. According to the results obtained from the research; the level of social anxiety of secondary school students in general was found moderate and low. However, the social anxiety level of 9,5% of the students was found at a high level. When examined in terms of the sub-dimensions of social anxiety, it was found that students mostly experienced social anxiety in the New Situations, second in the Fear of Negative Assessment and third in the General Situations. In general, the body image levels of the students participating in the research were high, only 1.4% of them were found to have low body image level. There was a moderate negative correlation between the levels of social anxiety and body image in adolescents. Body image explains 18% of social anxiety. While gender in the survey did not make a significant difference for social anxiety, body image of male was higher than female students. According to the class level, the social anxiety levels of the 6th grade students were higher than the 8th grade students, the body image levels did not make a meaningful difference compared to the class level. Students of non-illiterate mothers were found to have higher social worries than mothers with postgraduate degrees. Body image did not differ according to mother education level. Secondary school students with moderate socioeconomic status have a higher level of anxiety than those with lower socioeconomic status. According to body image, the students with upper socio-economic level were found to have higher body image scores than the students with lower socio-economic level. The level of father education and the number of siblings did not make a significant difference for both social anxiety and body image

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Future Expectations of Syrian Secondary School Students Living in Turkey: A Phenomenological Study

    Get PDF
This study aims at analysing future expectations of Syrian secondary school students that are living in Turkey. Considering the fact that these students, who constitute the study group in this research, will be the teenage adults of the country in the next ten years, they will significantly affect the future of Syria if they get back to their home country or Turkey if they stay here. Because of this reason, it is of crucial importance to identify the future expectations of these students. The issues that are investigated in this study are migration experiences of Syrian secondary school students, the education they will receive within the scope of their expectations for the next year and for the next ten years, their vocational preferences, the places where they are planning to live, the support and barriers they face while they try to reach their expectations, and the changes that they want to make about their life. The study findings put forward important results that should be considered during the process of planning the education and psycho-social support to be rendered to Syrian secondary school students

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
