The Real Cry of Syed Shaykh al-Hady

    Get PDF
Syed Shaykh al-Hady, militant reformer of Islam and Muslims, has yet to be fully recognized nationally in Malaya for his contribution to the liberation of Muslim consciousness. Syed Shaykh has yet to be recognized internationally for the part he played in this Malay extremity of the reformist movement started by the modernising theoreticians of the Islamic world, Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, Egypt’s Muhammad ‘Abduh, Rashid Rida and others. Syed was one of the founders of al-Imam (The Leader) in 1906, a Jawi-Malay journal published in Singapore and dedicated to islah, reform and renewal. In 1926-8, now based in Penang, he created al-Ikhwan (Brethren), the newspaper Saudara (Brother), as well as the Jelutong Press. In these Syed Shaykh Mohd. Tahir Jalaluddin, Imam Abu Bakar Ash ‘ari, and others courageously attacked abuses wrongly sanctified by a misinterpretation of what was the intrinsic direction and nature Islam, which they contended was at all times progressive and life-giving. They adamantly stood against taqlid, the blind following of tradition, which Prophet Muhammad had warned would lead us ‘to crawl into the lizard’s hole’ if our forefathers had done so. Cover photograph: Syed Shaykh al-Hady, grandfather and adoptive father of Datuk Dr. Syed Mohamed Alwi al-Hady who stands at his knee; 1925. Reading the criticisms of this Kaum Muda (New Faction) vanguard of over 90 years ago, one is struck by the realisation that many are still valid today, that Malay society in its religious-culture and religious-structure still stands in need of courageous islah thinkers if the life force of the Malay Muslim mass is to be allowed to come out from under the remaining coconut shell where no sun can shine in. This compendium is dedicated to that vision.MSRIFacultyUnreviewe

Sodium benzoate as aluminium corrosion inhibitor in acidic media / Abdul Hady Abu Bakar

    Get PDF
Two different experimental methods are used in order to confirm the ability of sodium benzoate to inhibit the corrosion on aluminium in diluted sulfuric acid and diluted hydrochloride acid. The inhibition efficiency and corrosion rate of sodium benzoate is determined using polarization method and weight loss measurement. Sodium benzoate behaved as cathodic corrosion inhibitor and mixed corrosion inhibitor in diluted sulfuric acid and diluted hydrochloride acid respectively. Both results from polarization method and weight loss measurement showed that the highest inhibition efficiency was achieved at concentration of 800ppm of sodium benzoate

Circumlocutory Imperialism: Watan in the Thoughts of Syed Shaykh bin Ahmad al-Hady

    No full text
This article seeks to examine such transition. Specifically, it focuses on the concept of watan(Ar. Watan or homeland) in the view of an early 20th century Muslim modernist, Syed Shaikh bin Ahmad al-Hady. Watan - as proclaimed by al-Hady - had a modern and secular connotation, posing a challenge to the prevalent worldview of the Malays and kerajaan(kingdom). The conceptualization of watan was new for most Malays. Identity was constructed predominantly in relation to the particular state in which a person resided. The significance of al-Hady's contribution was that he conceptualized watan in the sense of patrie which consequently became the pivotal basis for the construction of a modern nation-state.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v12i2.59

Recent advances in AI have enhanced the excitement surrounding chatbots during the past few decades. They were immensely popular in the B2C, pharmaceutical, medical, and educational sectors. The following research explores the advantages and disadvantages of using chatbots to give individualised learning experiences and serves as the foundation for the Erasmus+ "ChatLearn" project. Data has been gathered through surveys within this study to cluster and analyse the characteristics of students to derive data driven customized learning experience. The study will demonstrate the immense benefits of highly tailored learning experiences using virtual teaching assistants as well as some considerations to take into account. These findings will assist in creating a complete framework of the state-of-the-art personalisation technologies and aims to focus on the factors that impact student learning experiences. This paper presents the design and implementation of an educational chatbot to help teachers and students in a project management course. The chatbot is designed to provide personalized learning through the concept of a virtual assistant that replicates humanized conversation. The chatbot is strategized to provide support for students and teachers in project management. The design process of the chatbot, includes diverse evidence from surveys is analyzed for decision-making in technology design processes. The paper concludes by discussing the implications of the study for the design of educational chatbots for project-based learning and the potential of chatbots to support team-based learning in higher education

Early twentieth-century Malaya witnessed the emergence of Islamic reformist movement. Inspired by ‘Abduh, Malay reformists, epitomized by Tahir Jalaluddin and Ahmad al-Hady, discontented with the socio-economic and political conditions of the Malays, criticised the Malay ruling elites and called for reform of their society. While the former worked within the framework of formal Islamic scholarship as an ‘ālim, the latter primarily operated as a public intellectual who spoke to a broad audience, at least in the urban centres of the Straits Settlements. This study compares their careers and ideas regarding colonialism and their remedies to address the socio-economic conditions of Malay society and the intellectual crisis of the Muslims

Reduced-Exertion High-Intensity Interval Training as a Novel Therapeutic Approach for Insomnia [opinion].

Sleep deprivation, and decline in cardiorespiratory fitness are among many of the mortality risks found among different sleep and cardiorespiratory conditions. Control of these mortality risks may not only improve the condition-but in some times- may reverse the underlying disorder. Also, sleep deprivation can lead to a spectrum of negative clinical consequences including suicidal attempts (1). Additionally, data from the prospective population studies are consistent in showing that both short and long duration of sleep are predictors of mortality. There are bidirectional interactions between sleep and exercise, both affect each other through multiple physiological and psychological pathways, having further a role on mortality (2, 3).Insomnia in general has two main subcategories: primary and secondary types (1, 2). Table 1 summarizes the main differences between them
