The hypothesis of contact in nursing: a narrative review of the literature
In Social Psychology, in relation to the effects of contact, there are two theoretical strands apparently fighting against each other: to one side, the contact hypothesis of Allport according to which, the meeting between members of different groups can, if managed in favorable conditions, reduce prejudice, on the other side, the Social Identity Theory of Tajfel and Turner, according to which the comparison between people belonging to different groups may actually generate an attitude of ingroup favoritism and outgroup discrimination. Clinical Research Nurse involvement to foster a community based transcultural research in RODAM European study
Background and aim of the work: The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) can be considered the fulcrum
of clinical studies, being a vital link between patient, principal investigator, study sponsor and administrative
staff. The clinical research’s way is still long and the contribution that CRNs can provide is crucial. In
Italy, a CRN was employed in the study: Research on Obesity & Type 2 Diabetes among African Migrants
(RODAM). The aim of the paper is to explore and describe the experience of this involvement. Methods: The CRN managed the project in order to gain a complete collaboration from the Ghanaian population. From the first contact, the CRN decided to adopt a transcultural approach with the aim to create a relationship of understanding, mutual trust respect for each other’s cultural diversity. The CRN also used organizational, technical and linguistic skills. Results: The day-to-day trial management from CRN included the following activities: obtaining local Ethics Committee study approval; recruiting the study staff; planning the study activities; identifying potential study participants; collaborating with the mediators; managing contacts with other RODAM centers; conducting a follow-up of patients. The most important results of CRN involvement have been the empowerment of Ghanaian community and the effective healthcare promotion. Conclusions: The project encouraged the Ghanaian community to increase their healthcare awareness and encouraged the Ghanaian population to create new strategies to face the hard health challenges. The CRN is the most versatile and appropriate health professional to deal the entire study
Training an infectious disease unit in palliative care during and post COVID-19: a qualitative longitudinal study
Dealing with uncertainty. A qualitative study on the illness’ experience in patients with long-COVID in Italy
Background and goals: An unknown proportion of people who had COVID-19 infection continue to experience symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness, joint or muscle pain, difficulty sleeping, and brain fog. These symptoms have a significant impact on the quality of life. Long-COVID is a new multisystem disease still under investigation. This research aims to explore the illness experienced by patients suffering from Long-COVID in Italy.
Research design and methods: Qualitative methodology with semi-structured interviews. Participants were recruited on the Facebook patient group between October 2021 and January 2022. Participants had been experiencing symptoms for at least three months following confirmed COVID-19 infection. Interviews were conducted by video call, recorded and transcribed with consent. The thematic analysis method has been chosen to infer data from textual material.
Results: 17 interviews with women with Long-COVID have been analysed. The main themes include: a total change of life due to the symptomatology, loss of autonomy that affects social, family and professional life; social isolation, a sense of abandonment often increased by stigma, the difficulty of being believed and achieving diagnosis; difficulty in managing symptoms and accessing to care services; living with uncertainty caused by the lack of institutional, social, professional, familial and medical support.
Conclusions: Intervention programs, both institutional and social-health policies should be developed for patients with Long-COVID. The impact of symptoms could be reduced by developing standards and protocols, and by ensuring access to care and to multi-disciplinary rehabilitation. Further development of knowledge on Long-COVID is essential
Nursing students' experiences of and satisfaction with the clinical learning environment: the role of educational models in the simulation laboratory and in clinical practice
Background and aim of the work: Student satisfaction is an important element of the effectiveness of clinical placement, but there is little consensus in the literature as to the preferred model of clinical experience for undergraduate nursing students. The aim of this study was assess, for each academic year, students’ perception of the roles of nurse teachers (NT) and clinical nurse supervisors (CNS) who perform tutoring in both apprenticeship and laboratories and to identify and evaluate students’ satisfaction with the environment of clinical learning. Method: This analytic cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 173 nursing students in the Northern Italy. The research instrument used is the Clinical learning environment, supervision and nurse teacher (CLES+T) evaluation scale. Data were statistically analysed. Results: 94% of our sample answered questionnaires. Students expressed a higher level of satisfaction with their training experiences. The highest mean value was in the sub-dimension “Pedagogical atmosphere on the ward”. Third year students expressed higher satisfaction levels in their relationship with the CNS and lower satisfaction levels in their relationship with the NT. This result may be due to the educational model that is adopted in the course, in which the simulation laboratory didactic activities of the third year are conducted by CNS, who also supervises experiences of clinical learning in the clinical practice. Conclusions: The main finding in this study was that the students’ satisfaction with the supervisory relationship and the role of NT depend on how supervision in the clinical practice and in the simulation laboratory is organized
Myanmar health professionals' educational needs: a pilot study
Background and aim of the work: The main factor hindering the development of the Myanmar health system lies in the scarcity of financial and human resources attributed to the health system. This paper presents the preliminary results of a pilot study on the educational needs of Myanmar health professionals, addressing the empowerment of human resources as a strategic pillar for delivering the essential packages of health services. Methods: An explorative study following a qualitative approach has been conducted through semi-structured interviews to a convenience sample of 15 persons, selected as authoritative key-informants. Results: In addition to the lack of infrastructures, medicines, ambulances and health instruments, and the health disparities between the urban and rural areas, some widespread problems are reported as requiring health professionals’ training empowerment: traumas due to road accidents, management of childbirth, non-communicable diseases’ management and poor health education of the population. Discussion: Some areas can be evidenced for an improvement of professionals, training: maternal, neonatal and child health; communication between professionals and laypeople; Myanmar population’s health education; inter-professional training between doctors and nurses, but also between health personnel and non-health personnel. Conclusions: The educational needs of Myanmar health professionals emerge as closely related to the social and health needs of the Myanmar population, to the available resources and missing resources of the country’s health system and to the role of professionals within professionals/patients’ relationship
