    Outside, Around, Inside. New Paths to Discover San Michele Castle (Cagliari, Sardinia)

    In the framework of conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage, accessibility plays a crucial role. Architectural heritage peculiarities call for specific approaches: the same care must be adopted to improve accessibility to historic architecture, designing actions case by case. Starting from these considerations, the contribution is aimed to discuss the accessibility of fortified architecture, a not easily accessible heritage, to make it accessible both in a physical meaning as well as in cognitive, cultural and social. Particularly, the authors propose some reflections about alternative ways of usability for inaccessible architectures due to their typological configuration and as a consequence of previous conservation design. The case study is the medieval castle of San Michele in Cagliari (Sardinia), which was transformed several times during its life and restored at the end of the 20th century. The contribution analyses how a multidisciplinary approach is necessary for the formulation of effective accessibility solutions, especially in complex cases such as fortified architecture. This multidisciplinary approach must be accompanied by the widest possible consideration of the causes limiting accessibility, whether they are physical or related to motor, perceptive or cognitive disabilities

    The history of construction has always been characterized by an almost dogmatic search for geometric-proportional rules to govern, and sometimes motivate, design and construction choices. This rule, a messenger of physical truths and, at the same time, imbued with mystical meanings, has dominated “building”; from the “great measure” mentioned in the book of Ezekiel to the Renaissance treatises first, and then the modern ones, the geometric rule and proportion have been necessary and sufficient factors in establishing the strength of buildings. Even when the science of construction, as we understand it today, appeared in the 18th century, it often had to give way to the geometric rule, the so-called “science of building”, a little inherited from the past and a little sought after, a little construction practice and a little link between man and the divine. Gothic architecture is emblematic, capable of combining almost ancestral meanings with a spasmodic search for standardisation which, starting from a single wall thickness, could lead to the design of an entire cathedral. Vaulted systems are not immune to this, and although of unparalleled complexity, they often follow basic codified rules based on a single parameter: the curvature of the ribs. This paper proposes an analysis of some case studies in search of these characteristics and their invariance in order to hypothesize an automated process that, starting from the point clouds of the surveys, produces a synthesis representation of the vault curvatures

    Information and communication technology (ICT) are nowadays an integral part of daily life. Training and educational activities are among the different areas that widely profit from the use of these technologies. The proposed contribution aims to develop an augmented reality application for accessing documentary sources used in the teaching of drawing disciplines in architecture courses at the University of Cagliari. Much information is produced and collected in drawing classes, primarily in the form of representations, which are either adopted by the professors year after year or elaborated by the students during the classes. This collection of materials represents a significant legacy that is typically used to enhance instruction, despite certain obstacles in disseminating it among students. As a result, it was decided to use some of the publications from the core bibliography for a student studying the Castello district and its architecture as an “access point" to the knowledge

    The archives of architectural drawings represent an invaluable testimony of the teaching practices and methods used in the academic sphere throughout the history of architecture teaching. A heritage whose protection and valorisation has as its first step the digitisation of the physical documents; this digitisation cannot, however, be limited to mere reproduction, on pain of inheriting from the physical support the limitations that characterise it in terms of limited comprehension for the layman. The creation of digital reproductions must therefore be accompanied by tools for the informative enrichment of drawings, with cultural historical data often dispersed in multiple archives, and with new drawings and models that help their critical reading. The following contribution presents the development of a prototype of a web based consultation portal to protect and narrate the final results of the theses of the students of Gaetano Cima, the main protagonist of the architectural and urban scene in 19th-century Cagliari

    HBIM as an Active Tool for the Study of On-Paper Architecture: The Case of the Unbuilt Project for a Maritime School in Cagliari

    The research stands in continuity with the processes of valorization and communication of the architectural heritage of the twentieth century, already undertaken during the last years through the use of the digital medium. The digitization of archives, conducted through the development of models derived from the critical reading of architectural drawings, has led to the need to define new approaches to the translation of geometric and semantic components. Indeed, such translations develop from a complex process of interpretation capable of communicating a whole series of unseen values and significances that have remained latent. Digital models today must therefore be able to preserve and convey such complexity. This research proposes a workflow focused on the use of typical HBIM processes and tools, declined for the particular case of on-paper architectures, as active tools of study and interpretive reinterpretation. The case study is the model project for a Marinara Professional School, designed by architects Salvatore Rattu and Bruno Virdis, for the city of Cagliari during the early second half of the twentieth century. The digital reconfiguration in the HBIM environment allowed the opening to new paths of semantic redefinition of the drawings, facilitating the decomposition, documentation and communication of values related to the architecture of the twentieth century

    Il mezzo digitale ha imposto una riflessione sul ruolo degli archivi di architettura. La costruzione di modelli digitali derivanti dalle riletture delle architetture di carta, si traduce in molteplici riconfigurazioni del progetto. Queste riletture innescano un processo interpretativo nel quale alcune riflessioni latenti prendono forma nel modello digitale. La ricerca propone un flusso di lavoro incentrato sull’accesso, la valorizzazione e la divulgazione dei disegni d’architettura. Il caso studio è la Casa del Mutilato a Cagliari, progettata negli anni ’50 da Salvatore Rattu. La modellazione in ambiente BIM ha permesso di ridefinire virtualmente ogni componente rendendo possibile l’integrazione delle informazioni geometriche con tutti i dati rilevanti della costruzione. Il percorso di rilettura critica attraverso il linguaggio del disegno e la ricostruzione virtuale dell’opera progettata consentono inoltre una modellazione concettuale di alcune delle caratteristiche salienti del progetto. Un WebGIS che guida i visitatori in remoto in visite virtuali permette la costruzione di possibili itinerari di turistici, definendo un censimento georeferenziato dei progetti edificati e non edificati disegnati per la città di Cagliari da questo architetto del Novecento.Digital tools call for a reflection on the role and functions of architectural archives today. The construction of digital models made from paper architectures leads to multiple digital reconfigurations of the design process. These “re-readings” of the drawings trigger an interpretative process of “translation” in which some latent reflections take shape in the digital representation. The research proposes a workflow focused on accessing, enhancing and disseminating the drawings of the architectural archives. The case study is the project for the Casa del Mutilato in Cagliari drawn up in the 1950s by Salvatore Rattu. Modeling in a BIM environment has made it possible to virtually redefine each component, making it possible to integrate geometric information with all relevant construction data. The path of critical analysis through the language of drawing and the virtual reconstruction of the designed work also allows a conceptual modeling of some of the salient features of the project. The creation of a WebGIS guides the remote searches and allows the construction of possible itineraries for visits, defines a georeferenced census of the built and unbuilt architectures of this twentieth-century architect in Cagliari

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
