    Coral diversity (Anthozoa) in Nature park Telašćica

    Koraligenska biocenoza u Hrvatskoj se smatra ugroženim stanišnim tipom (NN 7/2006). U Jadranu su ovoj biocenozi prijetnja uz vađenje i sakupljanje morskih organizama te globalno zagrijavanje mora, nekontrolirani ribolov, sidrenje brodova, invazivne vrste, onečišćenje i zagađenje kroz kanalizaciju ili marikulturom, intenzivno cvjetanje mora, te razne rekreacijske aktivnost (kao što je ronjenje u zaštićenim područjima). Sve vrste koralja pripadaju u IUCN kategorije ugroženih (EN), gotovo ugroženih (NT) i osjetljivih (VU) vrsta (svojti). Najugroženije vrste iz istraživanog područja su žuta rožnjača (Eunicella cavolini), velika rožnjača (Paramuricea clavata), hvarski koralj (Madracis pharensis) i crveni koralj (Corallium rubrum). Podmorje na vanjskim strmcima PP „Telašćica“ još je uvijek u relativno dobrom stanju. Iako se vidi utjecaj čovjeka, fauna koralja je prilično raznolika i očuvana. Potrebno je uložiti još veće napore kako bi se što više umanjio direktan negativan utjecaj čovjeka (ribarenje i onečišćenje mora, pogotovo na područjima u Jadranu koja su pod posebnom zaštitom, kao u ovom slučaju PP „Telašćica“.Coralligenous biocenosis in Croatia is considered a threatened habitat type (NN 7/2006). In the Adriatic, this biocenosis is threatened by extraction and collection of marine organisms, global warming of the sea, uncontrolled fishing, boat anchoring, invasive species, pollution and contamination by sewage or aquaculture, intensive algal blooms, and a variety of recreational activities (such as diving in protected areas ). All types of corals belonging to the IUCN categories of endangered (EN), near threatened (NT) or vulnerable (VU) species (species). The most endangered species from the study area are Yellow Gorgonian (Eunicella cavolini), Violescent Sea-whip (Paramuricea clavata), Star Coral (Madracis pharensis) and Red Coral (Corallium rubrum). The underwater cliffs on the outer PP „Telascica“ are still in relatively good condition. Although you can see the impact of humans, coral fauna is quite diverse and well-preserved. We need to invest greater efforts in order to decrease the direct negative impact of humans (fishing and marine pollution), especially in areas in the Adriatic that are under special protection, as in this case BP "Telašćica"

    Povišena temperatura mora uzrokovana klimatskim promjenama dovodi do oštećenja, nekroze, izbjeljivanja i sve češćeg odumiranja organizama kao što su koralji. Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je opisati histološko stanje zdravih, nekrotičnih i izbijeljenih polipa busenastog kamenog koralja, Cladocora caespitosa, te utvrditi postoje li razlike u građi tkiva i histopatološke promjene s obzirom na dvije istraživane lokacije (NP Mljet i Piranski zaljev) u Jadranskom moru. Uzorci tkiva su uklopljeni u paraplastne blokove, rezani na mikrotomu te obojeni hematoksilin-eozin metodom i metodom bojenja po Gramu. Uzorci bazalne i površinske stijenke tijela su pregledani pod svjetlosnim mikroskopom, te morfometrijski analizirani.Opisana je uredna/zdrava struktura tkiva kod zdravih polipa, te histopatološka oštećenja utvrđena kod nekrotičnih i izbijeljenih polipa. Mikroskopskom analizom histoloških preparata između dvije istraživane lokacije nisu utvrđene razlike u strukturi tkiva zdravih jedinki, niti u tipu utvrđenih lezija u nekrotičnim i izbijeljenim polipima, dok su histomorfometrijske usporedbe pokazale da postoje razlike u debljini epiderme i mezogleje unutar istih zdravstvenih stanja između dvije lokacije. S obzirom da ova vrsta izgrađuje koraljne grebene o kojem ovisi veliki broj vrsta, a podložna je utjecaju klimatskih promjena, ovakva istraživanja pridonose planiranju njene zaštite, ali i očuvanju morskih sustava u Sredozemnom moru.Increased sea temperature caused by climate change leads to damage, necrosis, bleaching and increased mortality of organisms such as corals. The aim of research was to describe histological condition of healthy, necrotic and bleached polyps of stone coral Cladocora caespitosa and to explore possible differences in histological structures and histopathology between the two investigated locations in the Adriatic Sea (NP Mljet and Piran Bay). Tissues were embedded in paraplast blocks, cut on a microtome and stained with the hematoxylin-eosin and the Gram staining method. Slides from the basal and surface body wall were examined under a light microscope and morphometrically analysed. Histological architecture of healthy, necrotic and bleached polyps was described. There was no difference in histological structures of healthy individuals, nor in the type of lesions recorded in necrotic and bleached polyps between two locations. However, histomorphometric comparison showed that there are differences in the thickness of the epidermis and mesoglea within the same health condition between the two locations. Since the species is a reef building coral who shapes the habitat for numerous reef-associated organisms, and susceptible to climate change, this research contributes to its protection, but also to the conservation of marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Temperaturni stres predstavlja veliku ugrozu za osjetljive skupine organizama poput koralja. Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je ispitati utjecaj eksperimentalno izazvanog temperaturnog stresa na fiziološke i histološke pokazatelje kod kamenog koralja Cladocora caespitosa i crvene moruzgve Actinia equina. Organizmi prikupljeni u Jadranskom moru nakon perioda aklimatizacije smješteni su u dva akvarija, jedan s morskom vodom grijanom na 20 °C, a drugi na 30 °C, uz jednake ostale abiotičke parametre. Tkiva organizama uzorkovana su nakon dva tjedna. Histopatološke lezije kvalitativno su klasificirane svjetlosnom mikroskopijom. Za fiziološke pokazatelje, homogenati tkiva podvrgnuti su imunokemijskim analizama intenziteta lipidne peroksidacije, ukupnog glutationa i proteina toplinskog šoka (Hsp90, Hsp60, Hsp70). Kod vrste C. caespitosa uočene su značajne promjene na 30 °C u svim slojevima tkiva, kao i značajne razlike rezultata imunokemijskih analiza za grupe s povišenom temperaturom. Kod vrste A. equina nisu uočene značajnije histološke i fiziološke promjene između različitih temperaturnih tretmana. Istraživanje po prvi puta pokazuje mogućnost detekcije biomarkera oksidacijskog stresa kod vrste C. caespitosa i primjene istih kao metode rane detekcije temperaturnog stresa.Temperature stress poses a great threat to sensitive groups of organisms such as corals. This research aimed to examine the influence of experimentally induced temperature stress on physiological and histological indicators in the stony coral Cladocora caespitosa and the beadlet anemone Actinia equina. The organisms collected from the Adriatic sea were placed after acclimatization in two experimental aquariums, one with seawater heated to 20 °C and the other to 30 °C, with the same other abiotic parameters. Tissues of organisms were sampled after two weeks. Histopathological lesions were qualitatively classified by light microscopy. For physiological indicators, tissue homogenates were subjected to immunochemical analyses of the intensity of lipid peroxidation, total glutathione and heat shock proteins (Hsp90, Hsp60, Hsp70). In the species C. caespitosa, significant changes were observed at 30 °C in all tissue layers, as well as significant differences in the results of immunochemical analyses for groups with elevated temperatures. In the species A. equina, no significant histological and physiological changes were observed between different temperature treatments. The research shows for the first time the possibility of detecting biomarkers of oxidative stress in the species C. caespitosa and applying them as a method of early detection of temperature stress

    Genetic and morfological variability of the noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis Linnaeus, 1758) in Nature park Telašćica and National park Mljet

    Pinna nobilis jedan je od najimpozantnijih članova Sredozemnih školjkaša, može doseći veličinu od 120 cm i starost od 27 godina. Ugrožena je i zaštićena vrsta, ne samo zakonom nego i propisima na razini EU, s nedavnim demografskim oporavkom. Cilj ovog istraživanja je predočiti sveobuhvatnu informaciju o konzervacijskom statusu plemenite periske uzduž hrvatske obale: morfologiju vrste s naglaskom na gustoću populacije, njezinu strukturu, prostornu rasprostranjenost i veličinu te procjenu genetičke strukture i povezanosti s njezinom prostornom genetskom varijacijom u Jadranskom moru. Dvije populacije, po jedna iz Parka prirode Telašćica i Nacionalnog parka Mljet su obrađene korištenjem COI i 16S mtDNA markera. Gustoća populacije za oba MPA područja je bila gušća nego prosječna gustoća navedena za Mediteran sa populacijskom strukturom koja se sastoji većinom od odraslih i starijih jedinki, vjerojatne starosti između 8 - 15 godina. Genetske analize otkrile su postojanje genetičke strukturiranosti između venecijanskih i hrvatskih populacija unutar Jadranskog mora, kao i između egejske populacije i Jadranskog mora. Visoka razina dijeljenja haplotipova između sardinijskih i hrvatskih populacija navodi na fenomen o konstantnom protoku gena između zapadnog Mediterana i južnog Jadrana koji do sada nije bio otkriven.Pinna nobilis is one of the most imposing member of Mediterranean bivalve mollusks, reaching a size up to 120 cm and with reported maximum age of 27 years. It is endangered and protected species under both local and EU laws with recent demographic expansions. The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive information on conservation status of noble pen shell on Croatian coast: morphology of species with focus on the population density, structure, spatial distribution and size, together with appraisal of the genetic structure and population connectivity with its spatial genetic variation in the Adriatic Sea. Two populations from Nature Park Telašćica and National Park Mljet were surveyed using COI and 16S mtDNA markers. Population density of both MPA areas were higher than average found in Mediterranean with population structure mainly consists of adults and old individuals, possible from 8 to 15 years old. Genetic analysis revealed genetic structuring between Venetian and Croatian populations within Adriatic Sea, as well as between Aegean population and populations from Adriatic Sea. High levels of haplotype sharing between Sardinia and Croatia populations suggests the phenomena of a constant genetic flow between western Mediterranean and southern Adriatic Sea that has never been described before

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
