    Philosophical Andreia in Plato’s Republic

    No full text
In the most famous image in Plato’s Republic, Socrates peoples an underground cave with prisoners who believe that the shadows they see on the walls of the cave represent reality. He asks: what would it take for one of these prisoners to escape from his shackles and attempt the ascent to the light of the sun? There is one virtue in particular without which no prisoner can hope to escape the cave, and that is the virtue that I will call: philosophical andreia. This thesis is an inquiry into Plato’s treatment of philosophical andreia in the Republic. As we will see by way of detailed analysis of the dramatic and argumentative levels of the dialogue, philosophical andreia consists in the unity of what I will call “spiritedness” and “perseverance” in facing the many obstacles to the acquisition of wisdom. I will take the image of the cave as scaffolding for my inquiry, locating each of Socrates’ interlocutors within the cave according to their possession of the spiritedness and perseverance needed to escape from it. And I will take Socrates as performing the philosopher’s heroic katabasis to the cave in his attempt to liberate his interlocutors from its shadows. In the Socrates of the Republic, Plato presents us with a new kind of hero – the philosopher hero – and paradigm of a new kind of courage: philosophical andreia

Andreia and Gender in the Greek Novels

Towards the end of their novels, both Chariton and Heliodorus engage their heroes in remarkable feats of bravery in military and athletic contexts. Focusing on these two authors, this paper analyses the Greek novels\u27 conception of the cardinal philosophical virtue of andreia. It begins by identifying the prototypical spheres of andreia in both philosophical and more general cultural contexts, and examining the role played by gender stereotypes in the formation of ancient thought on andreia. It then explores the extent to which the novels advance a philosophy of andreia, borrowing and manipulating classical philosophical doctrine to create a complex virtue which reflects the novels\u27 classical dramatic settings, as well as more contemporary concerns.Meriel Jones is Lecturer in Classics at the University of Wales, Lampeter. She has published articles on magic in the Aethiopica and the meanings of Heliodorus\u27 character names, and has recently completed her doctoral thesis, Playing the Man: Performing Masculinities in the Greek Novel (Swansea). The attached dataset contains earthquake locations and the input files for software used to calculate them (HYPOSAT) and two seismic lines presented in the manuscript. Earthquakes were recorded during an ocean bottom seismometer experiment (OBS) between 08-2020 and 07-2021. Ten instruments were deployed on the seafloor in the Fram Strait, offshore west Svalbard during research cruise CAGE20-5 (https://doi.org/10.7557/cage.6909) and recovered during cruise CAGE21-3 (https://doi.org/10.7557/cage.6914). Both cruises took place on R/V Helmer Hansen. The purpose of the experiment was to improve understanding of local fluid flow systems and seafloor gas seepage and investigate tectonic influence on fluid flow processes (within the framework of the funding project "SEAMSTRESS" awarded to Andreia Plaza-Faverola)

Intimate partner violence, when men are victims, has been increasingly studied over the years. The demand for help from men has been growing, however, at a national level, there is a lack of research on the experience of living in a shelter. Therefore, in this study, we intended to access the experiences and meanings of the shelter for men who are victims of intimate violence and, for this, data was collected through a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi structured interview. In order to the data analysis, thematic analysis was used to explore the data collected in the 6 interviews carried out. The results obtained indicate that these victims have gone through severe victimization experiences, in which psychological violence was the most prevalent. With regard to the experience in the shelter, in general, it was described as positive and essential to recover from the harmful effects caused by violence. The most mentioned necessity by these men was the existence of greater periodicity in psychological support in victim support services. The practical implications will also be presented, as well as suggestions for future research

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
