    No full text

An Upgrade for the Kato Katz Method

The kato katz method was, and still is, an invaluable tool to diagnose schistosomiasis mansoni en masse in high and medium intensity infection areas that are economically backward. Due to the current sensitivity capabilities of 24 EPG, the standard kato katz method is unable to diagnose very low intensity infections. And even though alternatives are sought, none are as affordable, cost-effective and easy to use as kato katz in the context of LMICs.As the goals of the world health organization shift from disease mapping and treatment, to post treatment surveillance and eradication of S. Mansoni, more sensitive means of egg detection are necessary. The lack of a cost effective diagnostic tool will mean a rebound in the prevalence and intensity of infection, as medication cannot be given without a diagnosis. An accurate, cost effective, and easy to use method such as the currently used kato katz thus becomes a necessity. In this light, it was thought to be prudent to explore the idea of improving the kato katz process itself, in terms of sensitivity, ease of use and sustainability. The context of this project was strictly limited to the sample preparation process only, and the seven steps recomended by WHO were classified into filtration and smearing phases. Three concepts were generated for each phase, and evaluated relatively using the harris profile. The template filter and the draw down smearing method were chosen to be the most desirable, and were finalized for prototyping and evaluation.Material selection was based on their ability to withstand multiple cycles of cleaning using water and regular soap. Silicone strips with a stainless steel mesh insert and PLA for draw down smearer were chosen for their resistance to soap as well as economical value. Preliminary testing with synthetic feces showed that silicone strips were too flexible during the filtration process and did not allow for consistent deposit of fecal sample onto the glass slide. Hence the material was changed to a more rigid polycarbonate. The components were taken to Nigeria to be tested on field by one of the stakeholders, Mr. Prosper Oyibo. He let two experienced lab technicians test the components using actual feces, and took notes of their feedback, based on a questionnaire prepared before hand. Overall, the lab technicians found the improved kato katz method to have potential for on field use, given that a certain amount of changes were made, such as reduction in the amount of fecal sample, and changing the template so that feces do not collect at the corners. It may be concluded that with certain steps taken in the future, the improved kato katz method will certainly be useful.Integrated Product Desig

    Katz\u27s Book

A review of A History of Mathematics, by Victor J. Katz, HarperCollins 1993. This Book is undeniably a great book. Katz has exerted enormous effort to give a careful and complete summary of the whole history of mathematics, and he has succeeded. It is a job well done. Of course, the book is not perfect. As far as I know, only one author has ever written a perfect book, and Katz\u27s book does have some flaws as well as many strengths. In particular, it has some special flaws from the point of view of a spiritual person–as well as some strengths which a spiritual person can appreciate better than anyone else (1 Co 2:15). After making brief comments on the level of Katz\u27s book, I am going, in this review, to look at each chapter in turn, commenting on it from a Christian point of view

    No full text
The author discusses this problem in a singular way through a materialist approach on social reproduction. As globalization, social reproduction is examined in its political-economic, political-ecological, and cultural aspects. In an illustrated case about children and public spaces in New York, she develops the concept of rescaling of children, and shows us how specific geographies interconnect with global processes through geographic scales, and translocally. Katz proposes, furthermore, the concepts of topography and counter-topography, which are ways of analysing the intersection of global processes and their geographically unequal social costs, as well as political tools for reconstructing translocal and internationalist solidarities against this errant and irresponsible globalized capitalism

In this short essay the author tries to rescue the nature of the relationship that the historian Friedrich Katz developed with the State of Chihuahua and the border region, through his links with the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juarez. It presents a selection of key moments of his biography to suggest the magnitude of the historiographical, intellectual and humanist contributions professor Katz did to our country and to all those who were close with him individually

The dialect theatre of Nathan Katz Nathan Katz (1892-1981) was the author of two works for the theatre : a marvellous tale entitled "D'Ardwibele" (1924), and a drama, "Annele Balthasar" (1930). They are both in the idiom of the Sundgau, an isolated area in southern Alsace, and set in a village where religious consensus reigns. In the background of this ideal image there appears a nightmare vision. The Sundgau was infamous for the execution of witches. The village community torments one of its members, whose ralues differ from those of the majority, to a point where he loses both reason and life. The village then admits the victim’s innocence, and harmony restored until the next explosion of hatred. Both of Nathan Katz's works include a charitable, non-violent hero, the bearer of a messianic hope which can be heard in the echo that resounds at night in the gardens of his restricted fatherland. The themes evoked by Nathan Katz, such as the persecution of innocent victims, the foul smell of burning flesh, the survivors' endless mourning, are reinterpreted by the author of this article in terms of the persecutions inflicted by the Nazis.Cerf Eve.
